Am Sabbath früh Marien drei

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Am Sabbath früh Marien drei” (N. Herman, 1560), from the author’s Sontags-Evangelia for Easter Day. Interestingly, Herman says “Early on the Sabbath,” obviously meaning the latter in the Christian sense inaugurated by the resurrection, while the text says “Very early in the morning, the first day of the week.” With this hymn is the first instance of the melody now known as “Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag” (a hymn originally designed especially for the girls’ school), but a note indicates that the melody is appointed for all the Gospel paraphrases for Eastertide written in LM (88.88).

ON Sunday morn three Marys come

With spices early to the tomb

As now the shining day doth break,

And heaven’s sun is seen to wake.

Alleluia.

2 Who will for us the stone (they said)

Roll from before the tomb so dread?

But when they did the tomb behold

They saw the stone away was rolled.

Alleluia.

3 They entered then the sepulcher

And saw the angels sitting there

Upon the right side and arrayed

In long white garments heaven-made.

Alleluia.

4 In great affright the three are caught,

The angel saith to them: Fear not.

Ye seek Christ crucified, your Head,

But He is risen from the dead.

5 Behold, here is the very place

Where once they laid the Lord of grace.

Now go your way, His foll’wers tell,

To Peter bring ye word as well.

Alleluia.

6 To Galilee he bids them go,

Where Christ Himself to them will show.

They, going quickly, flee the tomb

By fear and wonder overcome.

Alleluia.

7 We thank Thee, Jesus Christ our Head,

That Thou art risen from the dead

And hast destroyed its pow’r and sway,

And us restored to life for aye.

Am Sabbath früh Marien drei

kamen zum Grab mit Spezerei.

Als jetzt der helle Tag anbrach,

und man die Sonn aufgehen sach.

Alleluia.

2 Wer wälzt uns von des Grabes Thür

den großen Stein, der leit darfür,

alsbald sie aber kamen dar,

der Stein darvon gewälzet war.

3 Da gingen sie zum Grab hinein,

und sahen drinn die Engelein,

im Grab sitzen zur rechten Hand,

in einem langen weißen Gwand.

4 Sie erschracken sehr vor dem Gsicht,

der Engel antwort: Fürcht euch nicht,

ihr sucht den gekreuzigten Christe,

vom Tod er auferstanden ist.

5 Da sehet her, das ist die Stadt,

an welcher er gelegen hat,

so geht nun hin und sagts von Stund,

sein Jüngern und thut Petro kund.

6 In Galiläam heißt sie gan,

da will der Herr sich sehen lan,

zum Grab, sie gingen schnell hinaus,

da kam sie an ein Furcht und Graus.

7 Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ,

daß du vom Tod erstanden bist,

und hast zerstört sein Gwalt und Macht,
und uns zum Leben wiederbracht.
