Here is my translation of the hymn, “In Gott ist unser Leben” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #89 for the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity (Gospel: Luke 10:23–37), with melody assignment “Herzlich thut mich verlangen.” The Church Hymnbook (1816ff.) gives a more developed English rendition, “The Duty First on Us Enjoined” in 7 stanzas of Common Meter (see below).
Of all the Giver, He;
A Christian truly striveth
To love Him heartily:
In love sincere he goeth,
Helps others in their needs,
The Spirit’s leading knoweth,
Who him to virtue leads.
2 According as he’s able
He keeps the Lord’s command
To help in time of trouble
The needy in the land:
He looks with pity holy
Upon the poorer man,
Befriendeth all the lowly,
And helps where’er he can.
3 Whoever sees his brother
In sickness and in need,
But comes not to the other
To help with word and deed,
Is still depraved as ever,
Perverse, hard-hearted, blind,
Dead to all good whatever,
In sin of heart and mind.
4 But our dear Lord in heaven,
Christ, who doth love us still,
Hath this commandment given,
To visit with good will
The lowly, poor, and needy
Whate’er the need may be
To bring them succor speedy
And help them willingly.
5 O Lord, the poor befriending,
And healing body_and soul!
Thy mercy to us lending,
Help us Thy Word keep whole,
And do as Thou hast spoken

The duty first on us enjoined,
That is to love the Lord
With all our hearts and all our mind
And all we can afford.
2 The next command is full as great,
To love our neighbors too—
Of like importance, and of weight,
As all the scriptures show.
3 If we love God with all our heart,
Then sure it must succeed;
We ne’er neglect to act our part
To those who are in need.
4 All acts of mercy God respects
Far more than sacrifice,
For such are they which He directs
