Es trutzt fast der Tyrannen Muth

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Es trutzt fast der Tyrannen Muth” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm LII, Quid gloriaris in malitia, with title “Psalm of consolation of the poor against the power of tyrants.” The Mixolydian melody by Waldis supports a completely iambic meter 88.88.44.888 (ABABCCDDD). I give it transposed down somewhat.

LOUD boast the tyrants’ haughty brood,
With word and deed against us strive;
They seek to take our life and good
Nor heed that God is yet alive.
They lust for lies / and vengeance prize,
Their tongue cuts like a whetted knife,
They seek with prince and king but strife,
Deceit, and spite, and end of life.

2 The Gospel sorely they blaspheme,
And claim it breeds but strife and war,
Yet ’tis a salutary theme
Salvation’s doctrine, they deplore.
Therefore the Lord / will all their horde
Destroy and take them clean away,
And root them out, lest good men stray,
And make their evil plain as day.

3 When this the righteous saints shall see,
They shall rejoice in godly fear,
And say, “They are served rightfully
Who would not God obey nor hear.
Him they deride, / nor will confide,
But in their temp’ral goods they trust,
And their great haughtiness and lust,
Which shall but leave them in the dust.

4 But we the right true Christians be
And in the Lord our trust hath been.
We grow and flourish as a tree,
And like the olive branches green,
Grow in our God / in His abode,
Depend alone upon His grace,
For all His wondrous works give praise,
Which He shows us in every place.

5 To Him then let us thankful be,
That He hath saved us by His Son,
Hath rescued us most graciously
And mighty wonders for us done.
We thank Thee, Lord, / for Thy dear Word
And doctrine pure, our guiding light,
In many places ringing bright,
Which points the way to heav’n aright!

Es trutzt fast der Tyrannen mut,
Mit rath und that uns widerstrebt,
Sie stellen uns nach leib und gut,
Und achten nicht daß got noch lebt,
Sie trachten nach / lügen und rach,
Ir zung wie eim scharpff messer schneidt,
Suchen nur eitlen mord und neid
Bei fürsten und der Obrigkeyt.

2 Das Evangeli lestern sehr,
Sprechen, Es mach krieg und auffruhr,
Und ist doch gar ein heylsam leer,
Welch uns die seligkeyt tregt für,
Drumb wirt sie Got / mit irer Rott
Verstören und zerschlagen gar,
Weg werffen aus der frommen schar,
So wirt ir boßheyt offenbar.

3 Wann solchs die frommen werden sehn,
Frewen sich des in Gottesforcht,
Sprechen: In ist gar recht geschehn,
Daß sie nit haben Got gehorcht,
Den sie verlacht / seinn trost veracht,
Verliessen sich auff zeitlich gut,
In irem grossen ubermut,
Welchs in den grösten schaden thut.

4 Wir aber die recht Christen sein,
Und unserm Got vertarwet han,
Werden wachsen und grünen fein,
Wie die frischen ölbäume schon,
Im hauß des Herrn / im geyst vermehrn,
Verlassen uns auff seine gnad,
Und preisen seine wunderthat,
Die Er an uns erzeyget hat.

5 Drumb dancken wir im Ewiglich,
Das Er all sachen macht zu gut,
Errettet uns gar gnediglich,
Und grosset thaten an uns thut,
Wir dancken, HERR, / für deine lehr,
Das uns erleucht dein Götlich wort,
Welchs jetz erklingt an manchem ort,
Und ist der weg zur Himelpfort.

Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn (part 5)

Here is the fifth part of my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXIX,  Beati immaculati, with title “A psalm of supplication, that God would lead us in His saving Word and grace and curb the enemy.” Waldis composed his hymn with one stanza for every alphabetical section, making 22 stanzas in all. To make it manageable on a daily basis, I have divided into multiple parts (as done by Schütz with Becker’s Psalm CXIX), the fifth part consisting of stanzas 14–16 (nun, samech, ain). The Ionian melody by Waldis, having the meter 887.887.87.87.84.48 is upbeat and accommodates the longer format well without insipid repetition. The meter is also used for Psalm CIV.

14 Thy Word let be my lamp and light
That I may lead my life aright,
Nor from Thy judgments waver.
Mine off’ring pleasing be to Thee,
The praise and thanks receive from me,
Thy Word let rule me ever.
The wicked lay in every place
A snare wherewith to take me;
Show me the vision of Thy grace,
Or they their prey shall make me.
Let me not from Thy Word depart,
My portion fair
It is fore’er,
The guide and gladness of my heart.

15 All doctrine false and vanity
I hate and flee continually,
From that, O Lord, defend me!
Break down all their ungodliness,
Root out their lies and guilefulness,
Those who would fain offend me.
I fear, O Lord,Thy judgment just,
I hold Thy Word with trembling;
Leave not ashamed in Thee my trust,
Let hope not be dissembling,
Let not my comforts futile prove;
Hold Thou me by
Thy Word on high,
Thy testimonies, Lord, I love!

16 Since I Thy judgments love, O Lord,
Give me not to the wicked horde,
The proud men and oppressors.
Thy servant represent, console,
Protect, guide, teach, for him control
The powerful transgressors—
Those who Thy Law have thrust from sight,
And Thy commands forsaken.
Keep me, Lord, in the path upright
I hate all false ways taken,
That I may love Thy Law divine
And may it hold
Above all gold!
For Thee, O God, I long and pine.

Herr, wenn ich rüf, verhör mein Stimm

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase “Herr, wenn ich ruf, erhör mein Stimm” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXLI, Domine clamavi, with title “A psalm of supplication that God would preserve in His pure Word and service and curb false doctrine and tyrants.” Heugel’s Tenor line is missing from the part book. The Phrygian melody by Waldis conforms to the common Lutheran hymn meter, 87.87.887. I give the eighth notes as quarter notes on the supposition that the black notes were not intended here, or are fractional of the preceding note; Zahn keeps them as eighth notes, giving it the sound more of an instrumental roll than sung ornament.

LORD, when I cry, my voice perceive,
Assist me for Thy glory;
Hear, Lord, how fervently I grieve,
My pray’r let count before Thee
As incense-off’ring eve and morn,
Which up to heaven’s height is borne,
To which my hands are lifted!

2 Defend my mouth, my heart and mind
From evildoers’ teaching,
Lest I be to false ways inclined
Nor heed the wicked preaching.
Let me not with transgressors eat,
Nor meanwhile Thy dear Word forget,
And live in shame among them.

3 When righteous men rebuke me here,
That gives more joyful savor
Than balsam-ointment choice and dear;
For else I must watch ever
That the ungodly harm me not
With wicked work and wicked thought,
From which God save me ever!

4 Bring down their doctrine from on high
And let their neck be broken,
By God the Rock more high than I,
their haughty pride be wroken.
Therein let it by all be found
How sweet and good my teachings sound,
Which souls from death delivers.

5 Though we be scattered by the foes,
Uprooted, and out-spewèd,
Yet Thou dost keep Thy children close,
Who have Thy Word pursuèd,
Who trust Thy grace, as Thou hast willed,
And firmly on Thy promise build—
Them wilt Thou cast out never.

6 Preserve me from the sinners’ trap,
And godless men ensnaring;
Make all their snares at once to snap,
And strike with wrath unsparing;
But grant me to escape their hand
And in Thy Word and doctrine stand
Nor be by Thee forsaken.

¶ I’ll sing Thee then a joyful song
For all Thy gracious doing,
If Thy hand is mine escort strong,
’Gainst those my soul pursuing,
And keeps me by Thy cheering grace
From every ill in every place—
I’ll joy in Thee forever.

HERR, wenn ich rüff, erhör mein stimm,
Mit hülff wöllst dich herfügen,
Mein flehlich bitt O HERR vernimm,
Mein gbet vor dir müß tügen,
Wie ein rawchopffer frü und spat,
Welches stracks hinauff gen himel gath,
Dazu mein hend auffheben.

2 Bewar meinn mund, mein hertz und sinn,
Vor der Gottlosen lere,
Das ich zu in nicht fall dahin,
Mich zu ir boßheyt kere.
Nicht mit den ubelthätern eß,
Und deines Worts dabei vergeß,
Schendtlich mit in zuleben.

3 Wann mich der grecht hie freuntlich strafft,
Das würt mich baß erfrewen,
Dann der thewr edle Balsam safft,
Dann ich mimch stedts muß schewen,
Daß mir der Gottloß je nicht schad,
Mit seiner bösen that und rath,
Dafür ich immer bette.

4 Gib daß ir lehr gestürtzet werd,
Und iren halß müß brechen,
Vom fels oben herab zur erd,
Ir hoffart wöllstu rechen.
Daß jederman erkenn darbei,
Daß mein lehr lieblich, freuntlich sei,
Die seel vom tod errette.

5 Werden wir drumb zerstrewet hie,
Zerwület und zerrissen,
So hastu dennoch acht auff die,
Die deins Worts sind geflissen,
Und wer auff deine gnad vertrawt,
Gar fest auff dein verheyssung bawt,
Den wirstu nicht verstossen.

6 Bewar mich vor der bösen strick,
Vor der Gottlosen fallen:
Laß in ir netz im augenblick,
All mit einander falln.
Ich aber mög fürüber gehn,
An deiner lehr und wort bestehn,
Von dir nit werd verlassen.

¶ So wil ich dir ein freuden lied
Für alle wolthat singen,
Wann mich dein handt vor in behüt,
Daß sie mich nit bezwingen,
Und mich durch deiner gnaden trost,
Von allem unfal hast erlost,
Wil mich dein Ewig frewen.

Hilf, Herre Gott, zu dieser Zeit

Here is  my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Hilf, Herre Gott, zu dieser Zeit” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm LXX, Deus in adjutorium, with title “Psalm of supplication for help against the tyrants and enemies of Christendom.” Waldis’s melody carries the hymns meter, 848.848.44.448 (AABCCBDDEEB), a meter used at least once earlier in Zürich for Psalm 91. Waldis seems inspired by it somewhat, though definitely creating and original and certainly more interesting melody.

WITH help, Lord, hasten now come
To Christendom,
Save us from anguish and distress!
The poison of the heretics
Our soul afflicts,
And to our death the tyrants press.
Their works, God, cast / to naught at last,
Them and their game, / God, put to shame,
Who seek our life in wickedness.

2 That Christendom on earth may be
Consoled by Thee,
Rejoice and sing with gladsome breast—
Those who the glory of Thy name
Love to acclaim,
In faith would seek Thy will as best,
Give thanks to Thee / most heartily
And will cease ne’er / this to declare:
God in His church be ever blest!

3 Although we lowly be and poor,
Our hope is sure,
So we endure the worldly horde;
We have great comfort yet with Thee,
Thou speedily
Shalt come and save us, God our Lord!
Our cause Thou tak’st, / us free Thou mak’st,
We shall always / give Thee the praise,
And see Thee worshiped and adored!

Hilff HERRE Got zu dieser zeit,
Der Christenheyt
Errett uns auß der angst und not,
Tyrannen mord und ketzer gifft,
Gar hart uns trifft,
Vervolgen gar biß in den todt,
Ir böse tück / wirff du zurück,
Mach sie zu schand / nur allesand,
Die uns bößlich nachstelln O Got.

2 Auff das die Christenheyt auff erd,
Getröstet werd,
Sich frewen müß und frölich sein:
All die deins Namens ehr lieb han,
Glauben daran,
Und fragen nach dem willen dein,
Die dancken dir / auß hertzen gir,
Und sagen das / on underlaß,
Hoch globt sei Got in seiner gmein.

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Ich bin zufried und schweig ganz still” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm LXII, Nonne Deo, with title “A supplication for protection against tyrants; an admonition to trust in God and not in men.” The surprising Phrygian melody by Waldis uses the meter 87.87.447.447. The meter, used several times in Waldis’s Psalter, is shared with more famous hymns, e.g., “Was mein Gott will, das gscheh allzeit,” the tune of which was already known with French texts in 1529; and continued to be productive throughout the 17th century.

I WILL content and silent be,
And let God rule as ever;
For He will help me plenteously
If from Him I not waver.
Against the foe / to Him I go,
My Rock, defense, salvation.
I am not moved / nor He disproved,
His Word is my sure station.

2 How dare ye thus in manner free
To seek the saint’s undoing
With murder, war, and tyranny,
His life always pursuing?
Your traps ye lay / and bide the day
When men have him forsaken,
And then are pressed / and have no rest
Till ye have him o’ertaken.

3 Ye daily evil deeds devise
The godly man to ruin,
With scorn, deceit, disgrace, and lies,
Through craft and wicked doing.
The lips speak fair, / the heart doth bear
All pois’nous things and cursing,
It is your joy, / tricks to employ,
All others’ joys reversing.

4 But I will trust upon God’s Word
While foes in battle face me.
My shield and refuge is the Lord,
’Gainst falls His arm shall brace me.
Thus give I you / this counsel true:
Trust in God’s help abiding,
Help He’ll bestow / from every woe
On those in Him confiding.

5 With men salvation is not found,
E’en with the great and mighty,
They do not hold, they are not sound,
God cuts their deeds off lightly.
So curb your heart, / from wrong depart,
Hate evil, do not do it—
Vain robb’ry cease! / Though wealth increase
Let not your heart cling to it.

6 God hath proclaimed and made this known,
This have I oft heard spoken:
That pow’r belongs to Him alone,
By whom all pow’rs are broken.
Both grace and wrath, / what each man hath
Here merited while living,
God shall to him, / fate glad or grim
On yonder day be giving.

Ich bin zufrid und schweig gantz still,
Und laß Got immer walten,
Gar reichlich er mir helffen wil,

Das ist ewr freud / wann ir hertz leyd

Laß nit das hertz dran kleben.

Verdient alhie auff erden,
Das muß im dort, / nach seinem wort,

Hilf deinen Knecht, schaff Recht

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Hilf deinen Knecht, schaff Recht” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm LIV, Deus in nomine, with title “Psalm of supplication for deliverance against the unjust enemies and tyrants.” The composition is remarkable for its number of 2, 3 and 4-syllable half-lines. The Phrygian melody by Waldis subtly interweaves the short half-lines into longer, fluid phrases so that the sense rather than the rhyme is emphasized.

GOD, save me now! / Judge Thou
Aright;
The godless fight
And with their war distress me;
Lord, hear me grieve, / Perceive
My cry,
That I not die,
While now the foes oppress me
And slight / Thy might,
And scowl fierce / To pierce
Thy Christian host,
And boast
That none will help or bless me.

2 Lord, save Thou me! / Set free
My heart
From pain and smart;
Uphold my soul and bear it!
Preserve, O Lord, / Thy Word
And name,
Which we acclaim;
Let us Thy pledge inherit!
This day / Repay
With all pain / Their vain
Deceit and sin,
Charge in,
And cool their haughty spirit!

3 Then Thee I’ll praise / Always,
Set free
From agony,
I’ll give Thy name the glory,
Who dost redeem / From shame
And wilt
Cleanse me from guilt,
To live by grace before Thee.
Thus I / Shall spy
My desire, / And fire
Of vengeance fall
On all
My foes who still deplore Thee.
