Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn (part 7)

Here is the seventh and final part of my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXIX,  Beati immaculati, with title “A psalm of supplication, that God would lead us in His saving Word and grace and curb the enemy.” Waldis composed his hymn with one stanza for every alphabetical section, making 22 stanzas in all. To make it manageable on a daily basis, I have divided into multiple parts (as done by Schütz with Becker’s Psalm CXIX), the seventh part consisting of stanzas 17–19 (resh, shin, taw). The Ionian melody by Waldis, having the meter 887.887.87.87.84.48 is upbeat and accommodates the longer format well without insipid repetition. The meter is also used for Psalm CIV.

20 See my affliction, rescue me,
Thy law I keep in memory,
Therefore be my defender,
Salvation flees the wicked e’er,
They do not seek Thy statutes fair,
Thy grace they
Great are Thy tender mercies, Lord,
After Thy laws restore me,
I walk not with the wicked horde,
Who hurt me and abhor me
And fight Thy Word to my dismay.
Thy Word I love,
It shall not move,
It is my rock of grace for aye.

21 The princes hunt me causelessly,
But my heart stands in fear of Thee,
All in Thy Word delighting
As in a great and precious spoil.
I hate all lies, and men of guile.
And love Thy Law
I praise Thee seven times a day,
Thy righteousness I treasure;
For Thy salvation wait I aye,
Till I have done Thy pleasure.
He who Thy Word takes for his guide,
Shall find and win
Great joy therein,
And thence shall never turn aside.

22 Lord, let my cry not go unheard,
Instruct me after Thy true Word,
And I will praise Thee ever.
Of Thee my tongue shall witness give,
Tell of Thy Law to all that live,
Thy gracious gifts adoring.
Thy godly hand let help bestow,
My soul do Thou enliven,
Thy Word with joy make me to know,
As Thou command hast given.
I as a sheep astray was lured;
Thy servant seek,
Thy comforts speak,
That I may not forget Thy Word!

Umb deynr grechtigkeyt willen.
Auff dein hyel ich stedts warten sol,
Biß ich deinn willn erfülle.
Wer sich nach deinen worten richt,
Der wirt daran
Groß freude han,
Und wirt davon abweichen nicht.

22 HERR Laß mein klag nicht unerhort,
Underweiß mich nach deinem wort,
So wil ich dich stedts loben:
Von dir sol zeugen meine zung,
Von deim gebot bei alt und jung,
Und preisen deine gaben,
Laß mir beistehn dein Göttlich handt,

Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn (part 6)

 Here is the sixth part of my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXIX,  Beati immaculati, with title “A psalm of supplication, that God would lead us in His saving Word and grace and curb the enemy.” Waldis composed his hymn with one stanza for every alphabetical section, making 22 stanzas in all. To make it manageable on a daily basis, I have divided into multiple parts (as done by Schütz with Becker’s Psalm CXIX), the sixth part consisting of stanzas 17–19 (pe, tzaddi, qoph). The Ionian melody by Waldis, having the meter 887.887.87.87.84.48 is upbeat and accommodates the longer format well without insipid repetition. The meter is also used for Psalm CIV.

17 How wondrous, Lord, Thy test’mants are!
When shines Thy Word forth like a star,
Its gladdens all the lowly.
Draw near, be my defense and guide,
Deliver me from human pride.
Grant me Thy mercy holy.
My steps make certain in Thy Word,
Let me therein walk ever,
Like as Thou keep’st in strength assured
Those who love Thee, their Savior.
Thy light Thou dost to us allot;
Therefore I grieve
Where I perceive
That men Thy Law and Word keep not.

18 Thou righteous art, right is Thy Word,
Thy testaments by Thee conferred,
And truth Thou hast commanded;
Zeal hath consumed me nigh to death
Because they have forgotten faith,
Thy Word and mercy splendid.
I wretched am, despised and small,
Grief and distress o’ertake me;
Yet I will trust Thy Word through all,
From grace shall nothing shake me.
Therefore teach me Thy righteousness
My life ’twill be,
I’ll live to Thee,
Abiding in Thy Word of grace.

19 With all my heart I cry, O Lord,
Receive my pray’r, Thy help afford,
To keep Thy statutes ever!
I cry to Thee, and early wake,
By Thy just judgments make me quick,
My cause support and favor.
The wicked wish to capture me,
Far from Thy Law declining;
Lord, Thou art near, and help’st me be
Safe from their false designing;
For Thee I have no peace no rest.
I know Thy Word
Is undeterred,
Forever firm is Thy behest.

17 Dein zeugniß HERR sind wunderbar,

In deim wort mach gewiß meinn gang,

18 Du bist gerecht, recht ist dein wort,
Dein zeugniß hast gebotten hart,

Doch wil ich gantz und aller ding
Auffs wort deinr gnaden hoffen,
Drumb lere mich dein grechtigkeyt,

Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn (part 5)

Here is the fifth part of my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXIX,  Beati immaculati, with title “A psalm of supplication, that God would lead us in His saving Word and grace and curb the enemy.” Waldis composed his hymn with one stanza for every alphabetical section, making 22 stanzas in all. To make it manageable on a daily basis, I have divided into multiple parts (as done by Schütz with Becker’s Psalm CXIX), the fifth part consisting of stanzas 14–16 (nun, samech, ain). The Ionian melody by Waldis, having the meter 887.887.87.87.84.48 is upbeat and accommodates the longer format well without insipid repetition. The meter is also used for Psalm CIV.

14 Thy Word let be my lamp and light
That I may lead my life aright,
Nor from Thy judgments waver.
Mine off’ring pleasing be to Thee,
The praise and thanks receive from me,
Thy Word let rule me ever.
The wicked lay in every place
A snare wherewith to take me;
Show me the vision of Thy grace,
Or they their prey shall make me.
Let me not from Thy Word depart,
My portion fair
It is fore’er,
The guide and gladness of my heart.

15 All doctrine false and vanity
I hate and flee continually,
From that, O Lord, defend me!
Break down all their ungodliness,
Root out their lies and guilefulness,
Those who would fain offend me.
I fear, O Lord,Thy judgment just,
I hold Thy Word with trembling;
Leave not ashamed in Thee my trust,
Let hope not be dissembling,
Let not my comforts futile prove;
Hold Thou me by
Thy Word on high,
Thy testimonies, Lord, I love!

16 Since I Thy judgments love, O Lord,
Give me not to the wicked horde,
The proud men and oppressors.
Thy servant represent, console,
Protect, guide, teach, for him control
The powerful transgressors—
Those who Thy Law have thrust from sight,
And Thy commands forsaken.
Keep me, Lord, in the path upright
I hate all false ways taken,
That I may love Thy Law divine
And may it hold
Above all gold!
For Thee, O God, I long and pine.

Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn (part 4)

Here is the fourth part of my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXIX,  Beati immaculati, with title “A psalm of supplication, that God would lead us in His saving Word and grace and curb the enemy.” Waldis composed his hymn with one stanza for every alphabetical section, making 22 stanzas in all. To make it manageable on a daily basis, I have divided into multiple parts (as done by Schütz with Becker’s Psalm CXIX), the fourth part consisting of stanzas 11–13 (caph, lamed, mem). The Ionian melody by Waldis, having the meter 887.887.87.87.84.48 is upbeat and accommodates the longer format well without insipid repetition. The meter is also used for Psalm CIV.

11 My soul for Thy salvation faints,
Thy Word’s my hope and confidence,
In long for it in sorrow.
I’m like a bottle in the smoke,
For anguish on my tears I choke,
When comes my fateful morrow?
Lord, when wilt Thou Thy judgment bring
Upon these proud defiers?
They dig their pits, they prick and sting
As heretics and liars.
oh, quicken me, Lord, in Thy grace!
I cling to Thee,
Thou helpest me,
So shall no ill my soul disgrace!

12 Lord, since Thy Word abides for aye
O’er heav’n and earth, rejoice I may;
All things are Thy creation.
All stands according to Thy Word,
All to Thy glory undeterred
Serves Thee within its station.
Unless Thy Law were my delight,
I would have perished surely
When the ungodly wound me tight
And set their cords securely.
The end of all that is I’ve seen;
But Thy dear Word
Consoles me, Lord;
Forever shall Thy Law remain.

13 Thy Word I love and glorify,
It makes me wise and clear of eye,
Therefore I keep it ever,
It is my treasure high and dear,
Such understanding as found here
The ancients boasted never.
Upon the right way I abide,
To Thy command adhering;
Thy testament from none I hide,
I hate all byways veering.
Thy Word is sweet unto my taste,
Dispels all grief,
Brings great relief,
Hath from my heart all sorrows chased.

11 Mein seel verlangt nach deinem heyl,

Uber die stoltzen buben?
Mit lügen un dmit falschem gdicht,

Nach deiner gnad mich HERR erquick,

Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn (part 3)

Here is the third part of my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXIX,  Beati immaculati, with title “A psalm of supplication, that God would lead us in His saving Word and grace and curb the enemy.” Waldis composed his hymn with one stanza for every alphabetical section, making 22 stanzas in all. To make it manageable on a daily basis, I have divided into multiple parts (as done by Schütz with Becker’s Psalm CXIX), the third part consisting of stanzas 8–10 (cheth, teth, yod). The Ionian melody by Waldis, having the meter 887.887.87.87.84.48 is upbeat and accommodates the longer format well without insipid repetition. The meter is also used for Psalm CIV.

8 I say, This shall my portion be,
To walk Thy ways unswervingly,
Thy testament attending;
Before Thy face I Thee entreat,
Lord, keep to me Thy promise sweet,
Thy gracious hearing lending!
Th’ ungodly bands would plunder me,
Bid me give up my Treasure;
But will I keep that company
That liveth in Thy pleasure.
Therefore I rise and midnight’s hour,
And thank Thee, Lord,
For Thy dear Word;
Earth teemeth with Thy grace and pow’r.

9 Thou keep’st Thy Word and fav’rest me.
Help me to keep unceasingly
My faith from all transgressing
I strayed, but Thou didst set me right,
Obedience taught by cross’s light
All for my good and blessing;
The proud in lying never cease,
Me from Thy Law to sever.
Their heart is thick and fat as grease,
Yet Thee I’ll hold forever.
The Law which Thy dear mouth reveals
More dear I hold
Than precious gold,
No rust consumes, nor robber steals.

10 Thy hand divine hath fashioned me,
Teach me Thy righteousness to see,
Thy faithful ones to gladden;
I know Thy judgments all are right,
Thou mak’st me keep them well in sight,
It shall my heart not sadden.
Thou faithfully afflicted hast,
Grant me Thy mercy tender,
The lying lips rebuke at last,
Spare not the vile offender.
All those who Thee in fear have claimed.
Preserve, O Lord,
In Thy sure ward,
And let them never be ashamed.

8 Ich sag: Das sol mein erbe sein,

Ich irret eh du mich bekertst,
Und durch das Creutz gehorsam lertst,
Das kompt mir jetz zu güte.
Die stoltzen gehn mit lügen her,

Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn (part 2)

Here is the second part of my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXIX,  Beati immaculati, with title “A psalm of supplication, that God would lead us in His saving Word and grace and curb the enemy.” Waldis composed his hymn with one stanza for every alphabetical section, making 22 stanzas in all. To make it manageable on a daily basis, I have divided into multiple parts (as done by Schütz with Becker’s Psalm CXIX), the second part consisting of stanzas 5–7 (he, waw, zayin). The Ionian melody by Waldis, having the meter 887.887.87.87.84.48 is upbeat and accommodates the longer format well without insipid repetition. The meter is also used for Psalm CIV.

5 Teach me Thy statutes constantly,
That till the end I firm may be,
And keep them without turning;
Lead me, O Lord, the even way,
My heart to Thy commandments sway,
All covetousness spurning;
And turn mine eyes lest they should see
Those doctrines which are vanity;
In Thy way quicken me, I pray,
That I may hear Thy Word alway;
Thy Law is always good and true,
Reproach I see.
My Savior be!
Oh, keep me in Thy righteousness.

6 Thy help and wealth of grace, O Lord,
Let be according to Thy Word
Upon my soul abounding.
My mouth ne’er of Thy Word bereave,
That I may fitting answers give
To slanderers surrounding.
I in Thy judgments hopeful stand,
So shall I keep them ever,
Walk joyfully in Thy command,
And let Thy Word be
With kings I’ll hold Thee unashamed,
My hands upraise
In all my ways,
Delighting in Thy Law acclaimed.

7 Keep to Thy servant true Thy Word
On which Thou bidd’st me hope, O Lord,
My comfort in affliction!
The proud have much derided me,
Yet I will not decline from Thee;
Thy Word is my conviction.
With godless men I do not hold,
By whom Thy Law’s forsaken;
When I recall Thy statutes old,
Joy in my heart doth waken,
Within my house I day and night
Thy grace recall,
It helpeth all,
My highest treasure, strength, and might!

Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn (part 1)

Here is the first part of my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Wohl denen, die ohn Wandel gehn” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXIX,  Beati immaculati, with title “A psalm of supplication, that God would lead us in His saving Word and grace and curb the enemy.” Waldis composed his hymn with one stanza for every alphabetical section, making 22 stanzas in all. To make it manageable on a daily basis, I have divided into multiple parts (as done by Schütz with Becker’s Psalm CXIX), the first part consisting of stanzas 1–4 (aleph, beth, gimel, daleth). The Ionian melody by Waldis, having the meter 887.887.87.87.84.48 is upbeat and accommodates the longer format well without insipid repetition. The meter is also used for Psalm CIV.

THEY blessèd are that walk unstained,
With all their heart pursue this end:
To live as God intendeth.
That to His holy Law give heed,
And day and night make sure no deed
His holy will offendeth.
So in Thy Word us surely hold,
With grace let us be fillèd,
So that our heart may not grow cold,
To live as Thou hast willèd.
Preserve us in the doctrine pure,
So shall we say
Thee thanks alway,
Oh, Lord, forsake us nevermore!

2 That man his way reproachless goes
That doth on Thy commands repose,
Seeks Thee with heart unturning.
Who holds Thy Word more firm than all,
Thou comfortest, lest he should fall
To hell’s eternal burning.
Blessèd be Thou, O Lord my God,
Thy statutes me Thou teachest,
That I may tell Thy Law abroad,
By which men’s hearts Thou reachest;
Thou mak’st my heart with hope to swell!
Thy Word doth give
Me strength to live;
What Thou commandest, that I tell.

3 Thy servant’s life keep by Thy might,
Grant me to know Thy will aright,
Lest I Thy Law be wronging;
I am a guest in earthly lands;
Hide not from me Thy just commands
For which my soul hath longing.
With vengeance Thou rebuk’st the proud,
Thy good commands despising;
Remove from me reproach’s cloud,
And I, Thy test’ments prizing,
Will keep them, though by princes fought.
Thy Word is e’er
My hope and cheer;
I trust in Thee; forsake me not!

4 My soul cleaves to the dust unheard;
Me quicken, Lord, after Thy Word,
I cry in my dejection;
Therefore instruct me in Thy will,
That I may praise not good for ill,
But make the best selection.
I groan, my heart must faint at length;
From lying ways retrieve me!
And strengthen me with godly strength,
Thy holy blessing give me.
Oh, let me not be put to shame,
Thine be alone
The way I run,
Directed by Thy Law I claim.

Wol denen die on wandel gehn,
