Allein in dir freu ich mich, Herr

Canticle XLII. A Song of the Whole Christian Church, Isaiah 61. [The second version.]

Mel.: “Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ.”

I JOY in Thee, O Lord, alone,
And all my soul rejoiceth,
Great joy in God it doth intone,
His benefits it voiceth,
For He hath sent me help from heav’n,
The garments of salvation giv’n,
And with the robe of righteousness
He doth me dress,
Wherefore His name I ever bless.

2 God makes me righteous in His Son,
Christ Jesus, my true Savior;
My comfort and my joy alone,
To whom my soul clings ever
With faith unfeigned both night and day;
Nor shall this robe be ripped away
By Satan or the present age,
Yea, though it rage
To take my life, and battle wage.

3 Like as a bridegroom in his dress
And priest with splendor gleameth,
And as a bride with beauteousness
Of gold and jewels teemeth,
So doth the righteous gleam as well
Against the wicked horde of hell
And evil men, who counsels weave
Sore to aggrieve
And persecute those who believe.

4 But even as from fertile earth
The goodly produce springeth,
The heart of faith to fruit gives birth,
Which pleasure to God bringeth.
And like the seed in garden sown,
God waits upon His faithful own,
To see how in the faith they grow
And peace they know
In God, lest any work them woe.

5 And righteousness and glory shall
Spring up and high be growing
In all the world, that heathen all
Its savor may be knowing,
Not by men’s works or nature’s force,
But God’s own strength will be its course,
And from the Lord of lords ’twill be,
Therefore may He
Alone be praised eternally!

also pranget der Gerechte
wider alles arg Geschlechte
des Teufels und der Menschen Kind,
welchs los Gesind
die Gläubigen verfolget schwind.

4 Aber gleichwie aus fruchtbar Erd
ein gut Gewächs ausgehet,
also ein gläubigs Herz gar währt
für Gott wächst und bestehet,
und wie des Saamens im Garten
thut Gott der Gläubigen warten,
daß sie im Glauben nehmen zu
und haben Ruh
in Gott, und niemands Leid ihn thu.

5 Auch wird Gerechtigkeit und Ehr
darzu groß Lob aufgehen
in aller Welt wird sichs vermehr,
das es all Heiden sehen,
nicht aus Natur oder Werken,
sondern nur aus Gottes Stärke,
aus dem Herrn Herrn wirds kommen her,
darum auch er
allein soll haben Preis und Ehr.

Ein neues Lied singet dem Herrn

Canticle XLI. A Song of All Men in All the World,

Which They Should Sing of God’s Glory, Power, and Wondrous Works, and of His Exceptional Grace toward the Needy and His Just Punishment of the Proud, Isaiah 42.

Mel.: Given as “Nun freut euch, lieben,” &c., but prob. = Von Himmel hoch da komm ich her; or else, Nun laßt uns den Leib, or Erhalt uns Herr.

A NEW song sing unto the Lord,
His heav’nly glory be adored,
His praises to the world’s far end
In every age let be sustained!

2 All that upon the sea doth fare
In ships that wander here and there,
And all that in the islands live,
Praise to the Lord Christ Jesus give!

3 Cry out, thou wilderness, and all
Ye cities there, both great and small,
Ye villages where heathen dwell,
To God the joyous anthem swell!

4 Those who on mountains’ tops reside
Or in the rocky hollows hide,
Give glory to the Lord fore’er
His praise in every age declare!

5 The Lord shall certainly go forth
Like as a mighty man on earth,
like as a man of war, and He
Shall stir up then His jealousy.

6 He shall cry out and thunder loud
And lay low all the rival crowd,
He will, though He may long refrain,
Not far from His own flock remain.

7 God hath already long been still,
Yet now to rise up is His will,
And to cry out as the wives of earth,
Who cry to God when giving birth.

8 The foe He will as one devour,
And make them them with mighty pow’r,
And hill and mountain wholly dry
As grass when summer’s heat is high.

9 Where water is, there shall be sand,
The water shall be like dry land,
The rivers shall as islands be,
And pools be dried up utterly.

10 I will lead out the blind also
Upon the way which men shall go,
And lead them on the paths alone
That they before had never known.

11 I will make darkness for them light,
And crooked roads put straight and right,
Before them I will do this all,
And not forsake nor let them fall.

12 But he that some false idol seeks,
And to the graven image speaks,
And saith, Thou art my god,” shall be
Turned back, and shamed assuredly.

GERMAN
Ein neues Lied singet dem Herrn,
zu Lob seinen Göttlichen Ehrn,
sein Ruhm bis and das End der Welt,
soll für und für ihm sein bestellt.

2 Drum alles, was im weiten Meer
auf Schiffen fähret hin und her,
auch alles, was in Inseln ist
soll loben den Herrn Jesum Christ.

3 Nun rufet auch, ihr Wüsten, laut,
und all Städt, so drinnen gebaut,
die Dörfer auf den Heiden all
solln jauchzen Gott mit grosem Schall.

4 Die auf den Bergen wohnen hoch,
und stecken in der Felsen Loch,
die laßt dem Herren geben Ehr,
sein Ruhm verkünden immermehr.

5 Der Herr wird ausziehen gewiß,
wie ein starker gerüster Rieß,
wie ein Kriegsmann im vollen Lauf
wird er sein Eifer wecken auf.

6 Er wird jauchzen und döhnen sehr,
erlegen all der Feinde Heer,
ob er gleich schweigt ein lange Zeit,
doch ist er von seim Volk nicht weit.

7 Gott hat bisher gehalten still,
doch nun er sich aufmachen will
und schreien wie in Kindesnoth
ein Weib rufet zu ihrem Gott.

8 Die Feind will er verschlingen all
und sie verwüsten allzumal,
Hügel und Berg ohn alle Maß,
daß gar verdorren muß ihr Gras.

9 Wo Wasser ist soll werden Sand,
die See solln werden trocken Land,
die Wasserström solln Inseln werd
in mittem Meer sein trocken Erd.

10 Die Blinden will ich leiten wohl
auf dem Weg, den man gehen sohl,
und auf den Steigen führen sie,
die sie erkannt zuvoren nie.

11 Ich will Finsternis machen Licht,
und Eben was ist Höckericht,
für ihn will ich solchs alles thun,
sie nicht verlassen denn noch nun.

12 Wer aber läßt auf Götzen sich
und zum gegossen Bilde spricht,
Du bist mein Gott, der soll zuhand
zurückkehren und werdn zuschand.

In meinem Gott ich freue mich

Here is my translation of the canticle paraphrase, “In meinem Gott ich freue mich” (C. Spangenberg, 1582), no. 42, with title “A hymn of the whole Christian church, with which she praises and thanks God for His precious Word, which brings faith and ineffable goods, life, and righteousness with it, and yields great benefit, Isa. 61.” The melody assigned is “Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin.”

I WILL rejoice in God my Lord,
Heartily singing,
My soul shall be with joy outpoured,
Gladly ringing,
For as with a garment fair
He clothed me with salvation!

2 The robe of His own righteousness
My God eternal
Hath put on me, my soul to bless,
And supernal
Glory of His Son bestowed:
Now I am saved forever.

3 Like as a bridegroom fairly decked,
With priestly splendor
So He doth ornaments select
To me tender,
As a bride with jewels bright
Herself most well adorneth.

4 As grass upon the field doth stand,
And seed increaseth,
In gardens growing tall and grand,
As God blesseth,
So shall righteousness and praise
Spring forth before all nations.

5 Yea, God the Lord shall righteousness
Give us abounding,
Which springing up, shall save and bless,
Those surrounding,
In the heathen nations all,
And it shall stand forever.

In meinem Gott ich freue mich,

ihm zu ehren,
denn er mit KLeidern des Heils
mich hat schön angezogen.

2 Mit dem Rock der Gerechtigkeit

seins lieben Sohns Herrlichkeit,
nun bin ich selig worden.

3 Wie ein Bräutgam in seinem Schmuck

also mit Kleinoten genug
bin umhangen
und wie ein Braut so werth
in ihrm Geschmeide bärdet.

4 Wie ein Gewächs im Felde steht
und edler Saamen
im Garten wächst und fein aufgeht
in Gotts Namen,
also wird Gerechtigkeit
für allem Volk aufgehen.

5 Es wird unser Gerechtigkeit
für allen Heiden
mit Lob und Ehr in Ewigkeit
uns bescheiden
aus Gott dem Herrn wird aufgehn
und ewiglich bestehen.
