Here is my translation of the hymn “Dieses ist ein Christlich Herz” (E. Neumeister, 1705), appointed in the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl for Trinity IV.

Mel.: Singen wir aus Herzensgrund.

CHRISTIAN is the heart whose gaze
Is on heaven fixed always,
God the Father for to see,
And endeavors dauntlessly
To be true to Him in faith,
And seeks both in life and death,
To be like Him, as He saith.

2 Hath His Word and Spirit not
Every means to Christians taught,
That they may in faith abide,
Nor to sin be turned aside?
Us He teacheth faithfully
That we should in unity
Merciful and gracious be.

3 When another does thee wrong,
Patient be, forbearing long,
And be ready to forgive,
As no hypocrite to live.
So God patience hath with thee
And forgives in clemency
Thee of all iniquity.

4 Gladly give to poor men too;
Give, as God commandeth you,
Who shall give a rich reward
To the gen’rous in the Lord.
By such giving are ye paid
Riches now in heaven laid,
Yea, like God above are made.

5 Thus is Christian duty taught:
Judge ye not, condemn ye not;
All in love and kindness do;
We are weak like others too.
Art thou with thyself at peace,
Cover neighbors’ faults in grace
And do not their shame increase.

6 Few, alas, this way abide;
Oft men think them justified,
When in truth no drop of blood
Is in any mortal good.
Men their beam will trivialize,
But the motes in neighbors’ eyes
See as beams of greatest size.

7 Man, do not such order keep,
But before thy doorway sweep.
Then, when filth remains no more,
Sweep before another’s door.
Where amendment lacks, amend;
But this way is right to wend:
To thy own self first attend.

8 God, I pray Thee, govern me,
That I may walk worthily!
Lead me in the virtuous way,
Nor let me in error stray.
Pow’r and grace on me bestow
Till I end my race below,
And to Thee in heaven go!

Dieses ist ein Christlich Herz,
welches täglich himmelwärts
auf den höchsten Vater sieht,
und sich unverrückt bemüht,
daß es ihm im Glauben treu
und im Leben auch darbei
ähnlich seinem Bilde sei.

2 Hat uns nicht sein Wort und Geist,
alle Mittel angeweist,
wie ein Christe soll bestehn,
und auf Gottes Wegen gehn?
treulich schärfet er uns ein,
daß wir sollen insgemein
gütig und barmerzig sein.

3 Wenn dir jemand Unrecht thut;
so beweise sanften Muth,
und sei zur Versöhnlichkeit
ohne Heuchelei bereit.
So hat Gott mit dir Geduld,
und vergiebt nach seiner Huld,
dir auch alle deine Schuld.

4 Auch den Armen gebet gern;
gebet. Denn bei Gott dem Herrn
ist ein reiches Wiedergelt
für die milde Hand bestellt.
Armen geben machet reich;
ja, ihr Menschen machet euch
dadurch, Gott im Himmel gleich.

5 Das ist auch der Christen Pflicht:
richtet noch verdammet nicht.
Glimpf und Liebe thut gemach.
Wir sind auch, wie andre, schwach.
Steht man nun mit sich in Ruh;
ei darum so decke du
auch des Nächsten Fehler zu.

6 Das geschicht oft, leider! schlecht.
Sich nur hält man für gerecht;
gegentheils kein Tropfen Blut
ist an andern Leuten gut.
Eigne Balken macht man klein;
doch des Nächsten Splitterlein
muß der größte Balken sein.

7 Mensch, nimms so verkehrt nicht für.
Fege doch vor deiner Thür.
Wird allda kein Koth mehr sein,
so mach auch bei andern rein.
Wo zu bessern, bessre man;
aber so ists recht gethan;
fang an dir zum ersten an.

8 Ach! mein Gott, regiere mich,
daß ich wandle würdiglich.
Führe mich den Tugendsteg,
und wend ab den Lasterweg.
Theile Kraft und Gnade mit,
bis zu dir mein letzter Schritt
aus der Welt in Himmel tritt.
