Ich steh an deinem Kreuze hier

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ich steh an deinem Kreuze hier” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for Judica. The title is likely a reference to Gerhardt’s Christmas hymn, “Ich steh an deiner Krippen hier.”

Mel.: Herr Jesu Christ, du höchstes Gut.

I STAND before Thy cross adored,

To learn and trust true-hearted;

From Thee and from Thy grace, O Lord,

Let me by naught be parted.

For if Thy strength perform it not,

Relief in Thee is vainly sought

By flesh and blood so pow’rless.

2 This I believe, and so am filled

With never-ending gladness,

That, Savior, Thou for me hast willed

To bear all pain and sadness.

I see my sins all clustered here

Upon Thy back a burden drear,

Since Thou wilt expiate them.

3 I feel as if I, thusly graced,

Hung on the cross upon Thee,

And God, appeased, hath me embraced

In love, as He hath done Thee;

For all Thy merits now are mine.

And so all that Thou, Lord divine,

Hast won, is my possession!

4 Since Thou my dear Redeemer art,

No cause for condemnation

Is found for me, I trust at heart,

For in Thy blood’s oblation

True righteousness Thou givest me,

Which in the judgment sets me free

From guilt and retribution.

5 Indeed I trust most certainly

Were I from sin not loosèd,

Another death to set me free

Thou wouldst not have refusèd;

Yet nothing lacks, for here Thou hast

Made satisfaction to the last,

Which merit counts forever.

6 Let me according to Thy grace,

Of Thee be also learning,

And follow Thee with patient pace

And love, no suff’ring spurning.

Upon me lay the yoke of cross,

But lend Thy strength, through joy and loss

To bear it without stumbling.

7 Let me, as Thou hast done for us,

Treat gently those who smite me

With wicked words and blasphemous;

And bless my cursers rightly;

Yea, let me for my rivals pray,

As Thou didst in Thy heartfelt way,

O Friend of every mortal!

8 All this, Lord, as Thou knowest well,

Imperfect here remaineth,

Yet if the Holy Ghost to dwell

Within my heart now deigneth,

The imperfection for its dress

Shall have thy perfect righteousness,

Which Thou to me imputest.

9 Then let me thus with constancy

Be living and believing,

Till I the image clear of Thee,

Dear Savior, am perceiving.

As true as was Thy suff’ring then,

So truly art Thou ris’n again,

So true is my salvation!

GERMAN

Ich steh an deinem Kreuze hier,

zu gläuben und zu lernen.

Laß nichts, o Jesu, mich von dir

und deinen Gnad entfernen.

Denn wo es deine Kraft nicht thut,

so kann mein eigen Fleisch und Blut

sich deiner nicht getrösten.

2 Ich gläube dann, und bin erfüllt

dadurch mit großen Freuden,

daß du, mein Heiland, alles willt

um meinet willen leiden.

Ich sehe meine Sünden hier;

die liegen alle da auf dir,

daß du dafür willt bußen.

3 Mir ist nicht anders, als ob ich

mit dir am Kreuze hienge,

und der versöhnte Gott auch mich,

wie dich, mit Lieb umfienge.

Denn dein Verdienst ist alles mein.

So muß auch das mein eigen sein,

was du damit erworben.

4 Weil du nun mein Erlöser bist,

gläub ich mit festem Muthe,

daß nichts an mir verdammlich ist.

In deinem theuren Blute

hab ich vor Gott Gerechtigkeit,

die im Gerichte mich befreit

von aller Schuld und Strafe.

5 Fürwahr ich gläube sicherlich,

wär ich nicht los von Sünden,

du stürbest noch einmal für mich,

mich völlig zu entbinden.

So aber fehlet nichts daran.

Vollkommen hast du gnug gethan,

und solch Verdienst gilt ewig.

6 Gieb, Jesu, gieb nach deiner Huld,

daß ich auch von dir lerne,

und dir mit LIeb und mit Geduld

im Leiden folge gerne.

LEgst du ein Joch des Kreuzes auf,

so lege so viel Kraft mir drauf,

daß ich es könne tragen.

7 Laß mich, wie du es dargelegt,

mit Sanfmuth dem begegnen,

der mich mit Lästerworten schlägt;

und meinen Flucher segnen.

Ja gieb, daß ich für meinen Feind,

wie du, o aller Menschen Freund,

von Herzen möge beten.

8 Dies alles zwar, wie du wohl weißt,

wird unvollkommen bleiben;

doch wird mich nur dein guter Geist

in meinem Herzen treiben;

so wrid die Unvollkommenheit

jedennoch durch Gerechtigkeit,

die du mir schenkst, bedecket.

9 Wohlan, laß mich beständiglich

so gläuben und so leben,

bis du, mein liebster Heiland, dich

mir wirst im Schauen geben.

Ach ja, so wahr dein Leiden ist,

so wahr du auferstanden bist,
so wahr werd ich auch selig!

Liebster Jesu, du bist kommen

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Liebster Jesu, du bist kommen” (E. Neumeister, 1712), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Laetare. Note that the hymns for the Lenten season in the second series are keyed more to the Passion than to the specific Sunday gospel reading. While the refrain here is from E. C. Homburg’s hymn, whose tune is here assigned, the text is an independent creation, not a parody, though perhaps an homage.

Mel.: Jesu, meines Lebens Leben.

THOU didst come, O dearest Savior,

Taking on, as very God,

Our own flesh by gracious favor,

That by Thy own death and blood,

Payment might for all be given,

And we be restored to heaven.

Thousand thousand thanks shall be

Dearest Jesus, unto Thee!

2 When Thou hadst God’s gracious pleasure

By Thy word made us to know,

Thou, to do it in full measure,

Didst to suff’ring gladly go

Thus to start Thy labor splendid,

Thou to Salem hast ascended.

Thousand thousand thanks shall be

Dearest Jesus, unto Thee!

3 Thou didst taste, O dearest Savior,

All the torments and the pains

That in hell afflict forever

Those condemned to deathless chains,

Thus for me God’s pardon earning

From the flames forever burning.

Thousand thousand thanks shall be

Dearest Jesus, unto Thee!

4 Past all thinking and expression

Were the pains Thy body knew.

Punishment for man’s transgression

Filled Thy members through and through,

My own body to deliver

From sin’s penalties forever.

Thousand thousand thanks shall be

Dearest Jesus, unto Thee!

5 Thou wast to Thy judgment hastened,

As a vile transgressor cast.

As an evildoer chastened,

Dreadful sentence on Thee passed;

Yet Thou borest my transgressions,

Me to free before God’s presence.

Thousand thousand thanks shall be

Dearest Jesus, unto Thee!

6 Who can tell with words unstirring,

Highest and most holy God,

How Thou patiently enduring

Spitting, mock’ry, scorn, and rod,

Didst procure my life in heaven,

Where a glorious crown is given?

Thousand thousand thanks shall be

Dearest Jesus, unto Thee!

7 Thou didst suffer men to strip Thee,

And thus naked must endure

Many a cruèl scourge to rip Thee,

Thereby for me to procure

God’s compassion flowing over,

And sin’s nakedness to cover.

Thousand thousand thanks shall be

Dearest Jesus, unto Thee!

8 Thou didst suffer crucifixion—

In the highest measure shamed!—

Bearing curse and malediction,

Which the Law for me proclaimed:

I instead for my possessing

Have God full and gracious blessing.

Thousand thousand thanks shall be

Dearest Jesus, unto Thee!

9 At the last Thou diedst willing,

When Thy task was finished quite,

Our redemption’s work fulfilling,

That by Thy own death I might

Find my death a very portal

Whence I pass to life immortal.

Thousand thousand thanks shall be

Dearest Jesus, unto Thee!

10 Thousand thousand thanks I’d say Thee

With my lips and mind and heart,

Yet my debt I could not pay Thee,

Nay, nor even make a start;

Yet, oh, let my feeble quaver

Please Thee, Jesus, dearest Savior,

Till I may when time is o’er

Thank Thee there forevermore.

GERMAN

Liebster Jesu, du bist kommen,

und hast, als der wahre Gott,

menschlich Fleisch an dich genommen,

daß du uns durch Blut und Tod

allesamt erlösen möchtest,

und zum Himmel wieder brächtest.

Tausend tausendmal sei dir,

liebster Jesu, Dank dafür!

2 Da du Gottes Gnadenwillen

uns durch Lehren kund gethan,

tratst du, solchen zu erfüllen,

auch dein Leiden willig an.

Bist darum, es anzufangen,

gen Jerusalem gegangen.

Tausend tausendmal sei dir,

liebster Jesu, Dank dafür!

3 Deine Seele hat geschmecket

eben solche Quaal und Pein,

die sich über die erstrecket,

die verdammt zur Hölle sein.

Drum wird Gott zu diesen Flammen

meine Seele nicht verdammen.

Tausend tausendmal sei dir,

liebster Jesu, Dank dafür!

4 Ach! auch deines Leibes Schmerzen

waren unaussprechlich schwer.

Keine Glieder samt dem Herzen

blieben da von Marter leer;

meinen Leib auch zu entbinden

von den Strafen aller Sünden.

Tausend tausendmal sei dir,

liebster Jesu, Dank dafür!

5 Du bist als ein Übertreter

vor Gerichte hingestellt.

Als dem ärgsten Übelthäter

ward das Urtheil dir gefällt.

Doch du trugest mein Verbrechen,

einst vor Gott mich frei zu sprechen.

Tausend tausendmal sei dir,

liebster Jesu, Dank dafür!

6 Welcher Mund vermag zu sagen,

o du allerhöchster Gott,

wie du in Geduld verrtragen

Speichel, Schande, Hohn und SPott;

daß du möchtst in jenem Leben

mir die Ehrenkrone geben?

Tausend tausendmal sei dir,

liebster Jesu, Dank dafür!

7 Nackend ließst du dich entkleiden,

mußtest unbarmherziglich

auch viel Geißelstreiche leiden:

wolltest so bei Gott für mich

die Barmherzigkeit erwecken

und die Sündenblöße decken.

Tausend tausendmal sei dir,

liebster Jesu, Dank dafür!

8 Du bist an das Kreuz geschlagen.

Größer war wohl keine Schmach.

Da hast du den Fluch getragen,

den mir das Gesetze sprach:

Aber nun hab ich dagegen

Gottes vollen Gnadensegen.

Tausend tausendmal sei dir,

liebster Jesu, Dank dafür!

9 Endlich wolltest du auch sterben,

da nun alles war vollbracht,

was du solltst für uns erwerben.

Und da hat dein Tod gemacht,

daß mir mein Tod muß gelingen,

zu dem Leben durchzudringen.

Tausend tausendmal sei dir,

liebster Jesu, Dank da für!

10 Ach zu tausend, tausendmalen

können Lippen, Herz und Sinn

dennoch nicht den Dank bezahlen,

welchen ich dir schuldig bin!

Aber laß dir doch mein Lallen,

liebster Jesu, wohlgefallen,

bis ich dir nach dieser Zeit

danken mag in Ewigkeit.

Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn, / hat für uns gelitten

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn, / hat für uns gelitten” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Oculi.

Mel.: Christus, der uns selig macht.

JESUS Christ, the Son of God
Suffered torment for us,
By His cross He sin o’ertrod
And from death He bore us;
Hell and devil conquered lie,
Nothing now remaineth
Which God’s children, when they die,
From their bliss restraineth.

2 Jesus suffered willingly
With a heart unfeigning;
From all forced compulsion free,
Deepest pain sustaining;
He despiseth not the rod,
Nor will e’er deplore us,
That He as the Lamb of God
Must be slaughtered for us.

3 Jesus suffered all alone,
None on earth was with Him,
None there was of flesh and bone
That could help bequeath Him;
E’en no angel succor gave
In His work atoning;
His was all the work to save,
His the pain and groaning.

4 Jesus suffered bodily,
Yet in soul far deeper;
Never can this measured be,
Ne’er a price be steeper!
Body_and soul in sin and vice
Were we mortals living,
Therefore He must pay the price,
Soul and body giving.

5 What He bore in death’s embrace,
As our need requirèd,
Was for us and in our place
For so He desirèd
That His merits evermore
Should bring sin’s forgiving
For all men in time before
And on earth yet living.

6 To the labors that He bore
And in truth fulfillèd,
He need add no whit the more,
All God’s wrath is stillèd.
All is finished without fail,
Without change abiding,
Evermore it shall avail
All therein confiding.

7 Jesus also bore for me
This His holy suff’ring.
This I hold unwav’ringly,
Joyful praises off’ring!
Yea, were I the only one
Ruined by transgression,
He would have for me alone
Gladly borne His Passion!

8 Still His love and faithful way
Which He manifested
Is as new for me today
As before attested.
True it stands and ever shall.
Nothing doth accuse me.
Lord, Thy merit doth with all
Blessings fair infuse me.

9 O my Savior, to Thy name
Let me e’er be singing,
While I live, to Thine acclaim
Thanks and off’rings bringing.
When some day I shall by Thee
Live with Thee forever,
There too I eternally
Will Thee praise, my Savior.

GERMAN

Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn,
hat für uns gelitten,
und durch seine Passion
Sünd und Tod bestritten.
Höll und Teufel sind besiegt!
daß zun Gottes Kindern
nichts mehr in dem Wege liegt,
so ihr Heil kann hindern.

2 Jesus litte williglich
und von ganzen Herzen.
Ungezwungen gab er sich
in die teifsten Schmerzen.
Also ist er uns nicht gram;
nie wird er uns hassen,
daß er sich, als Gottes Lamm,
müssen schlachten lassen.

3 Jesus litte ganz allein.
Niemand konnt auf Erden,
wer es auch nur mochte sein,
sein Gehülfe werden.
Auch kein Engel half ihm nicht
im Erlösungswerke.
Er hat alles ausgericht
durch selbsteigne Stärke.

4 Jesus litt am Leibe viel;
mehr noch an der Seelen.
Ach! da ist kein Maß noch Zeil,
wenn man wollte zählen.
Denn an uns lag beiderseits
Seel und Leib im Bösen.
Darum mußt er durch sein Kreuz
beide gleich erlösen.

5 Was er ausgestanden hat,
was er mußt erfüllen,
das geschah an unsrer Statt,
und um unsertwillen.
Sein Verdienst sollt allgemein
allen Menschen werden,
die nur je gewesen sein,
und noch sind auf Erden.

6 Zu dem allen, was er nun
über sich genommen,
darf er weiten nichts mehr thun.
Alles ist volkommen.
Und wird auch zu aller Zeit
unverändert bleiben.
Ja, es gilt in Ewigkeit
allen, die es gläuben.

7 Jesus hat dann auch für mich
alles wollen leiden.
Dieses gläub ich festiglich,
und mit großen Freuden.
Ja, sollt ichs allein nur sein,
der durch Schuld verdorben,
würd er doch für mich allein
gerne sein gestorben.

8 Seine Liebe, seine Treu,
die er da erwiesen,
ist mir heute noch so neu,
als sie war vor diesen.
Und so steht sie unverrückt.
Nichts ist mir entgegen.
Dein Verdienst, Herr Jesu, schmückt
mich mit allem Segen.

9 Laß, mein Heiland, doch dafür
deinem Namen singen.
Weil ich lebe, will ich dir
Dank und OPfer bringen.
Werd ich denn dereinst durch dich
bei dir ewig leben,
will ich dir auch ewiglich
Lob und Ehre geben.
