Der Herr hat uns befohlen

Here is my translation of the Baptism hymn, “Der Herr hat uns befohlen” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #109 with melody assignment “Nun laßt uns Gott dem Herren.” For this hymn, specified for the Baptism of adults, Henkel provides seven stanzas to be sung before the baptismal rite and two stanzas to follow it.

 

THE Lord, His reign expanding
Sent us by His commanding
To bring to every nation
The office of salvation.

2 Go, teaching and baptizing,
My kingdom realizing,
My church on earth creating,
My people consecrating.

3 This must be done most surely:
Who seek God’s kingdom purely
Go by regeneration
Or else receive damnation.

4 Ye must be baptized rightly,
The promise holding tightly,
To have what sin repealeth,
The gifts the Spirit sealeth.

5 To those their sin bewailing,
God granteth grace availing;
He will the pow’r be giving,
A new life to be living.

6 Renounce ye all things evil,
The wicked world and devil;
Believe in Christ the Savior,
Be true to Him forever.

7 What Christ for you obtainèd
When He your death sustainèd—
Remains your sure possession
As ye keep this confession.

8 The Lord with strength endue you,
In all good works work through you,
That ye may battle meetly,
And conquer sin completely.

9 The Lord both rule and guide you,
Whatever may betide you,
And grant you at life’s ceasing
Eternal life and blessing.

wir seine Diener sollen
in alle Welt hingehen,
das Lehramt zu versehen.

2 Geht hin und lehrt und taufet,
die ich hab theur gekaufet,
damit sie hier auf Erden
mir auch geweihet werden.

3 Gewiß das muß geschehen,
wer Gottes Reich will sehen,
muß werden neugeboren,
sonst gehet er verloren.

4 Ihr müßt euch taufen lassen
und die Verheißung fassen,
wollt ihr des Geistes Gaben
an euch versiegelet haben.

5 Auf Reu und Leid der Sünden
läßt Gott euch Gnade finden,
er will euch Kräfte geben
zu einem neuen Leben.

6 Entsaget allem Bösen
der Welt mit ihrem Wesen,
an Jesum sollt ihr gläuben,
im ewig treu verbleiben.

7 Was Christus euch erworben,
da er für euch gestorben,
das bleibt euch übergeben,
werdt ihr im Taufbund leben.

Here is my translation of the post-Baptism hymn, “Wie groß sind Gottes Gaben” (Anon., and Ludwig Helmbold), in NEGB #108 with melody assignment “Wach auf mein Herz und singe” (=“Nun laßt uns Gott dem Herren”). This is a reworking and cento of Ludwig Helmbold’s table hymn, “Nun laßt uns Gott dem Herren” (cf. Walther’s Hymnal #54) of which the stanza 1, lines 3–4 form the kernel of our stanza 1, lines 1–2, to which two new lines added, and the three remaining stanzas Helmbold’s stanzas 5, 6, and 7. Because of the alterations, I provide a fresh translation of these stanzas as well.

 

HOW great the gifts God gives us,
By which He here receives us!
He in His love so prized us,
He bought us and baptized us.

2 His Word, Baptism, Communion
Aid us against all ruin.
So may the Spirit, guiding,
Keep us in them confiding.

3 Here righteousness we’re given
By Christ, and life in heaven;
Through Him we find remission
For every last transgression.

4 We thank Him for His favor
With dauntless spirit ever,
Who makes us sinners lowly
The sons of grace most holy.

2 Sein Wort, sein Tauf, sein Nachtmahl
dient wider allen Unfall,
der Heilge Geist im Glauben
lehr uns darauf vertrauen.

3 Durch Christum wird uns geben
Gerechtigkeit und Leben,
wir können durch ihn finden
Vergebung unsrer Sünden.

4 Wir danken seiner Güte
mit freudigem Gemüthe,
daß er uns arme Sünder
auch macht zu Gnadenkinder.
