O Gottes Sohn von Ewigkeit (part 2/2)

My next new hymn translation from Lochner’s Passion-book was “O Gottes Sohn von Ewigkeit” (J. J. Breithaupt, 1687), of which stanza 13 is quoted at the end of Devotion 30 (“Christ Is Condemned to Death as a Blasphemer”). Here of the full translation begun yesterday I give the second part, stanzas 8–13.

Mel.: Wie schön leucht uns der Morgenstern

YET, O Lord Christ, how may it be
That oft Thou art so far from me,
  Nor help’st my heart’s believing?
How many a sigh I send in grief,
As doves bring home no olive leaf
  To still this Noah’s grieving!
Balm shall calm all,
  Cease thy weeping,
  Hopeful keeping,
Faith confideth
And on God unfelt abideth.

9 A woman, when she bears a child,
With many a pain and ache is filled,
  And knoweth of no gladness;
Soon, when the child is brought to light,
She only thinks of God’s great might,
  And knoweth of no sadness.
Why thus? Because
  All the groaning,
  Grief, and moaning,
Sorrows stinging,
Precious fruit to her are bringing.

10 Such often is faith’s wonted way:
In pain and fear and great dismay
  It thinks itself forsaken;
Keep in remembrance Jesus’ death,
His great distress, His dying breath,
  Who grieved Himself forsaken:
Sin-blind mankind!
  Though it seemeth
  God’s light dimmeth
In thy pining:
’Tis at the night the stars are shining!

11 Christ taketh thus the path designed
And draws to us His Father’s mind
  As He before ascended:
A little while He is not seen,
But in thee He shall rise again,
  And give thee comfort splendid.
Light’s source! His course
  Sunlike goeth,
  Bliss bestoweth:
Naught but blessing
Follows on these paths progressing!

12 And should I honor give Thee, God,
My Savior, by the cross’s load
  Thou borest to Thy dying,
Then is it but a little while,
And rest shall follow this exile,
  A ceaseless joy supplying:
Then I shall cry:
  Jubilatë!
  And Cantatë!
With rejoicing;
And be now my gladness voicing!

13 God’s Son from all eternity,
We wait, Thy gracious face to see,
  When days at last are ended!
Then eyes are filled with glory’s sight,
Then ears are filled with love’s true light;
  By Thine appearing splendid;
Clearly, clearly
  Pow’rs majestic,
  Seers prophetic
Shall be given
To behold Thee, Lamb of heaven!

GERMAN

8 Allein, wie kommts, Herr Jesu Christ!
daß du mir oft so ferne bist
mit deinem Licht im Glauben?
Wie mancher Seufzer fleugt mir aus,
doch bringn kein Ölblatt nicht zu Haus
dem Noa seine Tauben!
Stille, Wille!
Laß dein Girren
und Verwirren;
mein Vertrauen
muß auf Gott ohn Fühlen bauen.

9 Ein Weib, wenn sie bebähren soll,
befindt sich vieler Schmerzen voll,
und weiß von keiner Freude;
bald, wenn der Mensch zur Welt gebracht,
gedenkt sie nur an Gottes Macht,
und weiß von keinem Leide.
Warum? Darum,
daß die Plage,
Angst und Klage
unterm Zagen
hat die edle Frucht getragen.

10 So ist der Glaube manchesmal
in großen Nöthen, Furcht und Qual
und klagt, man sei verlaßen.
Halt im Gedächtnis Jesu Tod,
und dessen wundergroße Noth,
der schreiet gleicher Maßen:
Blinder Sünder!
der du meinest
wenn du weinest
Gott sei ferne,

meine Wonne,
nichts denn Segen
folget mir auf diesen Wegen.

12 Und sollt ich mit der Kreuzeslast,
die du, mein Heil! getragen hast
bis in den Tod dich ehren;
so ists doch ein geringes Nu,
darauf denn alsobald folgt Ruh
in Freuden ohn Aufhören:
Endlich werd ich
Jubilate
und Cantate
fröhlich singen,
drum will ich nun tapfer ringen.

13 O Gottes Sohn in Ewigkeit!
Wir warten schon der letzten Zeit
da wir dich sollen sehen;
ihr Augen voller Herrlichkeit!
Ihr Ohren voller Lieblichkeit!
Wiewohl wird euch geschehen!
Lauter, lauter Majestäten
und Propheten
werden schauen
Gottes Lamm auf grünen Auen.

Versuchet euch doch selbst

Here is my translation of the faith hymn, “Versuchet euch doch selbst” (Joachim Justus Breithaupt, d. 1732), in NEGB #186 with melody assignment “Nun danket alle Gott” omitting stanzas 6–10; first appearing in a sermon printed in Erfurt in 1687 on the occasion of a farewell address (Christliche Meiningischer Abschied und Erffurthischer Anspruch).

EXAMINE well yourselves,
Lest e’er your faith be hollow;
See if Christ is in you,
And if His way ye follow
In humbleness and love,
With patient, gentle mood,
And always are prepared
To serve your neighbor’s good.

2 Faith is a candle bright
Within the heart concealèd;
As radiance breaketh forth
When morning is revealèd,
So it displays its pow’r,
The mind of Christ to laud,
Renews the heart and sense,
And makes a child of God.

3 It draws from Christ true life,
And justice and salvation,
The neighbor’s profit seeks,
With joy forgives transgression;
’Tis rich enough in Christ:
Redeemed from every sin,
It teems with courage bold,
No source of pangs within.

4 It hopes with confidence,
Trusts in God’s Word immortal,
Which casts away all doubt,
And showeth heaven’s portal.
That splendor yet to come
The eyes of faith attest:
When Christ shall take His bride
And bring her to His rest.

5 Pure love doth sprout and grow
And fruits abundant beareth,
Doth friend and foe refresh
And in God’s radiance fareth;
It tolerates and bears
What giveth others fright,
Forever faithful stands
Before the wicked’s might.

6 God loved us when we were
His enemies ungracious;
He gave His only Son
For sinners so audacious;
He giveth love for hate:
Who here stakes life and limb,
Will love as God hath loved
His foes who hated Him.

7 The burden which He gives
He also helps to carry;
Faith worketh patience too,
Makes light the plagues that harry.
Impatient murm’ring stills,
And stirs one up to pray,
Since for distress and woe
God sets a final day.

8 By these we only learn
To know our sad condition,
And near to God are brought,
And daily make petition;
We of ourselves despair,
And Christ in faith receive.
Who by His blood and death
Alone can us relieve.

9 Faith, clinging to this blood,
Great pow’r and strength obtaineth,
And thus a ready will
To do good works it gaineth;
It flees from self-desire,
Would no presumption know,
A humble heart maintains,
Bears boldly cross and woe.

10 Examine thee and see
If Christ within thee liveth;
The life of Christ it is
For which true faith e’er striveth;
He firstly justifies,
Then worketh holiness
And pleasure in all good:
Canst thou the same confess?

11 O Lord, therefore increase
The faith which Thou hast given,
Then can no mighty force
Deprive me of Thy heaven;
Grant grace that so my light
May to Thy praise inflame,
That as a Christian I
May truly bear Christ’s name.

GERMAN
Versuchet euch doch selbst,
ob ihr im Glauben stehet,
ob Christus in euch ist,
ob ihr ihm auch nachgehet
in Demuth und Geduld,
in Sanftmuth, Freundlichkeit,
ob ihr dem Nächsten stets
zu dienen seid bereit.

2 Der Glaube ist ein Licht
im Herzen tief verborgen,
bricht als ein Glanz hervor,
scheint als der helle Morgen,
erweiset seine Kraft,
macht Christo gleich gesinnt,
verneuert Herz und Muth,
macht mich zu Gottes Kind.

3 Er schöpft aus Christo Heil,
Gerechtigkeit und Leben,
sucht stets des Nächsten wohl,
ist willig zu vergeben;
er ist in Christo reich;
von Sünden losgezählt,
ist er voll starken Muth,
nichts ist das ihn noch quält.

4 Er hofft voll Zuversicht
und trauet Gottes Worte,
dies hebt den Zweifel ganz,
es zeigt die Himmelspforte;
von ferne glänzt die Pracht
dem Glaubensauge zu:
der Heiland führt die Braut
und winket ihr zur Ruh.

5 Die reine Liebe wächst
und trägt die reichsten Früchte,
erquicket Freund und Feind
und geht in Gottes Lichte;
sie duldet und verträgt
was andre bitter macht,
bleibt unbeweglich Treu
bei aller Bosheit Macht.

6 Gott liebte uns da wir
noch seine Feinde waren;
er schenkte seinen Sohn
den frechen Sünderscharen:
schenkt Liebe für den Haß:
wer dieses gläubig faßt,
liebt auch, wie Gott geliebt
den Menschen, der ihn haßt.

7 Die Last, die er auflegt,
hilft er auch selber tragen;
der Glaube bringt Geduld,
erleichtet alle Plagen;
statt Murren, Ungeduld,
wird das Gebet erweckt,
weil aller Angst und Noth
von Gott ein Ziel gesteckt.

8 Man lernet nur dadurch
sein Elend recht verstehen,
drengt näher sich zu Gott,
hält an mit Bitten, Flehen,
verzaget an sich selbst,
nimmt Christum gläubig an,
der durch sein Blut und Tod,
allein uns helfen kann.

9 Der Glaube faßt dies Blut,
erlanget Kraft und Stärke:
wird willig und bereit,
zu üben gute Werke;
entsagt dem Eigensinn,
flieht die Vermessenheit,
bleibt in der Demuth stehn,
trägt muthig Kreuz und Leid.

10 So prüfe dich denn wohl,
ob Christus in dir lebet,
denn Christi Leben ists,
wornach der Glaube strebet;
erst machet er gerecht,
denn heilig, wirket Lust
zu allem guten Werk:
sieh, ob du auch so thust.

11 O Herr! so mehre doch
in mir den wahren Glauben,
so kann mir keine Macht
die guten Werke rauben;
gib Gnade, daß mein Licht,
stets dir zum Ruhme brennt,
daß ich in Wahrheit sei,
ein Christ, wie man mich nennt.

O reicher Gott von Gütigkeit

Here is my translation of the sanctification (Christian patience) hymn, “O reicher Gott von Gütigkeit” (Joachim Justus Breithaupt, d. 1732), from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #422 (cento of 5 stanzas), originally from the Geistreiches Gesang-Buch (Halle, 1697) with 7 stanzas, the last two being here supplied from Christ-Evangelische Hauß- und Anhang der Kirchen-Music (Augsburg: Wagner, 1702). It may be judged from the layout that the Wisc. hymnal omitted 2 stanzas to fit the page, but these two stanzas may also have seemed weaker in somewhat unclear or pietistic idiom. They are also omitted in the Pennsylvania hymnal 1866 which was the base text (#422 also there). The original title was “Not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” The melody is “Was Gott thut das ist wohlgethan.”

O GOD of goodness full and free,
The Fount of mercy solely!
How great Thy grace and love to me
And all in spirit lowly!
My heart is still
And saith, Thy will
Alone, O heav’nly Father
Be done, nor any other!

2 I pray Thee, make Thy face to shine
Within my heart benighted;
Griefs scatter at Thy Word divine
When by its splendor lighted.
Forevermore
Unbar the door
Of grace and truth insightful,
In brilliance all-delightful.

3 How blest is he and holy too
Whose will is captive taken
By Thee, O Christ, and made anew
And granted faith unshaken!
For with Thy blood
Is all made good,
The Father’s reconcilèd,
Man no more sin-defilèd!

4 For God is not a child of earth,
The evil to be choosing;
The best men too are blind from birth,
The path too lightly losing;
Yet those who stay
Upon God’s way,
Content to do God’s pleasure,
Are blest in fullest measure.

5 Create in me, O Holy Ghost,
The mind of Christ the Savior,
And, since the Couns’lor is Thy post,
Give me Thy heav’nly favor,
That I may be
From self-will free
All things to Thee, Lord, giving;
Thy will within me living.

[6 Then break, O God, the devil’s arts,
Who always doth endeavor
To turn aside Thy children’s hearts
From Thy obedience ever;
Drive off the foe,
Who means great woe,
Nor let him prosper ever
The saints from Thee to sever.

7 But when to show Thy holy will
Thy light all darkness routeth,
Vouchsafe without all pain to still
As well the thought that doubteth.
So let be bound
In peace profound
All inward conversation—
Thy will, my inclination.]

GERMAN
O reicher Gott von Gütigkeit,
von Gnade und Erbarmen,
wie groß ist deine Freundlichkeit
bei allen geistlich Armen!
Mein Herz ist still
und spricht: dein Will,
o Vater in der Höhe!
dein Will allein geschehe.

2 Laß leuchten nur dein Angesicht
in meinem dunklen Herzen,
da deines theuren Wortes Licht
zerstreuet alle Schmerzen,
Und öffne mir
die schöne Thür
der Gnaden und der Wahrheit,
in lauter frohen Klarheit.

3 Ach, selig und gar heilig ist,
wer hiezu kann gelangen
daß du, o Mittler Jesu Christ!
den Willen nimmst gefangen
und dringst den Sinn
zum Vater hin,
versöhnt mit deinem Blute,
da schmeckt man alles Gute.

4 Denn Gott ist nicht ein Menschenkind,
was Böses zu erwählen;
der beste Mensch ist oftmals blind
und kann gar leichtlich fehlen;
wer aber sich
ganz lediglich
vergnügt in Gottes Wegen,
der findet lauter Segen.

5 Drum schaff in mir, o heilger Geist!
den wahren Sinn des Sohnes,
und gieb mir, der du Tröster heißt,
die Einfalt deines Thrones,
daß ich ja frei
vom Wollen sei
und mich dir übergebe,
daß dein Will in mir lebe.

[6 Zerbrich, O Gott, des Teufels List,
der immer will verhindern,
daß nicht, was auch dein Rathschluß ist
erscheine deinen Kindern.
Stoß ab den Feind,
ders böse meint,
laß an das Licht nie kommen,
was er zufügt den Frommen.

7 Wenn aber deines Friedensschein
nun zeiget deinen Willen,
so wollest du ohn alle Pein
auch allen Zweifel stillen.
Versiegle du
in tiefer Ruh
all Innigkeit der Seelen,
deine Wille sei mein Wählen.]
