An dich, Herr Gott, verlaß ich mich

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “An dich, Herr Gott, verlaß ich mich” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm LXXI, In te Domine speravi, with title “Psalm of supplication for the Christian church, that God would not forsake her in the last age, but help her against her enemies, and comfort her.” The Phrygian melody by Waldis follows the meter 8477.8477.8477 (AABBCCDDEEFF).

IN Thee, Lord God, and in Thy grace
My trust I place,
Let me not be confounded,
Though by my foes surrounded!
Deliver by Thy righteousness
From all distress,
Incline Thine ears most kindly,
Help me, who struggle blindly.
Be Thou my Lord, my confidence,
My strong defense
Where I take refuge ever;
Cease not to be my Savior!

2 Thou hast Thy help sworn to supply,
Therefore have I
Hoped in Thy consolation:
My comfort, life, salvation!
God, save me from the villain’s hand,
To shame remand
The cruèl tyrant, raving,
Thy lowly servant saving.
For I from youth, nay, infancy,
Have hoped in Thee,
And from the womb been holden
Up by Thy succor golden.

3 Thy Word is wondrous; all my days
I sing its praise.
’Tis by the good regarded,
And by the world discarded.
In Thee, my refuge, lies my lot;
Forsake me not!
My mouth, Thy praises paying,
Let be my faith displaying;
When at the end of life I gray,
Life sinks away,
And when my strength must fail me,
Still let Thy help avail me.

4 They hotly rage who me deplore,
And spread their lore,
Their sly deceptions making,
Against me counsel taking,
And say, Thou hast forsaken me,
And shout with glee,
As if they could affect me
And Thou couldst not protect me.
Therefore, O God, but be Thou near
In time of fear,
With speedy intervention!
Thou seest their intention!

5 My enemies let perish all,
In terror fall,
To all confusion tending,
In mock’ry meet their ending.
Make as a heap reproach and shame
To cover them,
And curse Thou all their doing
Who seek my hurt and ruin,
That I may e’er Thy glories show
And make men know
Thy grace and Thy salvation,
Beyond enumeration.

6 In Thy strength will I go abroad,
O Lord my God,
Thy righteousness declaring,
Thy proven message sharing;
From Thee I have since childhood learned,
By Thee was turned,
To Christian faith elected,
And by Thy Word directed.
In old age therefore do not go
When gray I grow,
That Thy Word may be spoken
To save the poor and broken.

7 That we Thy wondrous works may tell
And preach as well
Thy mighty domination
In every generation,
Thy mighty pow’r above all kings,
Which does all things,
From age to age forthshowing,
That children may be knowing;
Thy righteousness, O God, is high,
Beyond the sky,
Thy pow’r all creatures beareth;
Who, God, with Thee compareth?

8 In error’s grip too long we lay
With great dismay,
Struck down, corrupt, and sickened;
Now hath Thy Word us quickened;
And from the depths of dreams and doubt
Thou pluck’st us out,
To find the struggle over,
And life in Thee discover.
Thou by Thy Word dost make us known
To every throne,
Thy grace with joy imbueth
And our old heart reneweth!

9 For this our gladsome thanks we bring
With sounding string,
Thy faithfulness acclaiming,
Beyond our pow’r of naming,
In Israel O holy God
Of Sabaoth,
To Thee be praises given
Forever high in heaven!
My mouth and soul for joy’s excess
Thy name shall bless,
With mirth Thy praise propounding
To distant lands resounding.

10 My tongue and heart that in me live
Strive e’er to give
Thy righteousness due glory,
And for Thy gifts t’ adore Thee!
Lord, let eternal vengeance fall
On sinners all,
Let brimstone, fire, and lightning,
Strike them with fury fright’ning,
Who would Thy Word and Christians quell!
Send them to hell,
To bear their curse forever,
Who us to harm endeavor!

GERMAN
An dich Herr Gott verlaß ich mich,
Und traw auf dich,
Laß nit zu schanden werden,
Mich hie vor dir auff erden:
Erret mich durch dein grechtigkeyt,
Auß allem leyd,
Dein ohren zu mir neyge,
Hilfft mir, ich bin so feyge.
Sei mir Herr got ein starcker hort,
Ein sicher pfort,
Dahin ich immer fliehe,
Dein Hülff mir nicht entziehe.

2 Du hast mir hülffe zugesagt,
Drumb hab ichs gwagt,
Und dir mich gantz ergeben,
Mein heyl, mein trost, mein leben:
Hilff mir auß des Gotlosen hand,
Und mach zu schand
Die ungrechten Tyrannen,
Sih, wie sie sich ermannen,
Ich hab mich von meinr jugent an
Auff dich verlan,
Von meiner mutterleibe,
Die hülff ich dir zuschreibe.

3 Dein wort, welchs ich red immerdar,
Ist wunderbar,
Von frommen wirts betrachtet,
Und vor der welt verachtet:
Dennoch bistu mein zuversicht,

4 Dann meine feinde toben sehr,
Mit falscher leer,
Mit list und bösen thaten,
Sich wider mich berathen:
Sprechen, du habst verlassen mich,
Und frewen sich,
Obs mich ergriffen hetten,
Und du könst mich nicht retten,
Drumb sei nit fern von mir O got,
In meiner not,
Laß mir dein hülff erscheinen,
Du sihst, wie sie mich meynen.

5 Laß meine feind umbkommen all
In selbst zum fall,
Daß sie sich müssen schämen,
In hon ein ende nemen:
Mit schanden werden uberschütt,
Und gar zerrütt,
Und wöllst ir thun verfluchen,
All die mein unglück suchen,
Auff das ich stedts deinn rhum verkünd,
Und daß mein mund,
Dein gnad und heyl mög kennen,
Die ich nit all kan nennen.

6 In deiner krafft geh ich einher,
O Gott mein Herr,
Dein grechtigkeyt zu preisen,
Die du uns thust beweisen:
Von jugent auff hast uns gelert,
Zu dir bekert,
Die Christneheyt zurhalten,
Und dein wort lassen walten,
Drumb laß im alter auch nit nach
Wann ich würd schwach,
Dein wort mög widerkommen
Zum heil und trost den frommen.

7 Auff das wir deine grosse sterck
Und wunderwerck
Predigen und verkünden
Von kind zu kindes kinden:
Dein herlich[k]eyt, dein macht und krafft,
Die alles schafft
Bekant auch möge werden
Den nachkommen auff erden,
Hoch ist, Gott, dein gerechtigkeit,
Weit aus gebreyt,
Dein gwalt ist groß und reiche,
Ach Gott wer ist dir gleiche?

8 Wir waren im irrthum vorlangst
Mit grosser angst
Geschlagen gar darnider,
Jetz tröstestu uns wider:
Und auß der tieff der falschen leer
Zeuchst uns herfür,
Daß wir ietz uberwindern,
Bei dir das leben finden,
Du machst uns durch dein wort bekant
In allem land,
Dein gnad thut uns erfrewen
Und unser hertz vernewen.

9 Des dancken wir mit freuden vil
Auff seyten spil
Für deine trew so grosse,
Die hat bei uns keyn masse:
In Israel du heilger Gott
Von Zebaoth,
Dich solln wir ewig loben
Im himel hoch dort oben,
Mein mundt und meine seel allbeyd
Vor grosser frud
Dein lob gar frölich singen,
Und lassens weit erklingen.

10 Mein zung, mein hertz, das in mir lebt,
Stedts darnach strebt
Dein grechtigkeyt zu loben
Und all dein Göttlich gaben:
HERR, laß auch gehn, scham, schand und schmach
Und ewig rach
Blitz, donner, fewr und schwefel
Ubr all die hie mit frevel
Den Christen und deim wort nachstelln,
Wöllst sie zur Helln,
Ewiglich all verfluchen,
Die unser unglück suchen.

Wenn ich, Herr Gott, mein Stimm heb auf

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Wenn ich, Herr Gott, mein Stimm heb auf” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm XXVIII, Ad te Domine clamavi, with title “A consolation and supplication against the enemies of the church.” The Mixolydian melody by Waldis follows the meter 827.827.87.887 (AABCCBDEDDE), used only here in his Psalter; which he may have taken from Vogtherr’s Psalm LXXI, “Herr Gott, ich trau allein auf dich” (Strassburg, 1525). I give the melody transposed down somewhat.

WHEN unto Thee, Lord God on high,
I cry,
Spare not Thy help amending;
Lest if Thou silent be to me,
I be
Like those to hell descending!
When I lift up my hands to pray,
Let me not be forsaken,
Lest evil draw me clean away
Or I with evildoers stay,
And be from Thee, Lord, taken.

2 They speak fair sayings foully meant,
Intent
That we should not discern it;
Just payment give their wicked horde,
O Lord,
As surely as they earn it!
They carry on so self-assured,
And will not trust Thee ever;
Regarding not Thy works and Word,
Their ruin let not be deterred,
And build their forces never!

3 Blest be the Lord, who heard with care
My pray’r;
In Him my heart is trusting.
He comforts me, when I’m dismayed
Gives aid,
Therefore my heart is boasting.
The Lord my strength and shield shall be,
His heirs doth help and cherish;
Feeds and uplifts them ceaselessly
So that His grace they ever see
And none of His shall perish.

¶ For all these gifts so great and good
We should
Praise Him with sweetest singing,
Extolling Him our whole life long,
Our song
Of thanks in all things bringing,
In Jesus Christ His only Son,
Who took our human nature,
And came to earth from heaven’s throne,
And life for us by dying won,
As our dear Mediator.
