Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, mein Gott

Here is my translation of the Trinitarian trust and prayer hymn, “Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, mein Gott” (Johann Walter, d. 1570), not to be confused with Martin Schalling’s later but more popular hymn “Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr.” Our hymn appears in the Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch (Wisconsin Synod) #62, appointed to be sung to “Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt.” A different, more complex choral melody by Walther is found in his collection of settings, Das Christlich Kinderlied . . . (1566).

MY God, I love Thee heartily,
My Hope when foes surround me,
My Savior in necessity,
My steady Rock to ground me.
My Strength and Fortress undeterred,
My Lair to hide me surely,
My shield and shelter is Thy Word,
Possessed in faith securely.

2 God is my Life and Savior true,
My Horn of exultation,
His Word’s my strength each day anew,
My hope’s most sure foundation.
God is my Prize and Light of faith,
My Help and Comfort ever,
My heart’s Delight and Trust till death;
I scorn all worldly favor.

3 Lord God, assist me, that I might
Sincerely call Thee Father,
And always know in faith aright
Christ, Thy dear Son, my Brother,
Whose blood from death delivered me,
And brought me life eternal!
Lord Jesus, grant me constantly
Thy help and balm supernal.

4 God, Holy Ghost, thy grace bestow
This Word to keep and cherish,
Let faith not be but empty show,
Nor love grow cold and perish;
O God, the Holy Trinity,
Thy pow’r let not forsake me,
Confirm my feeble flesh when I
Must from this life betake me.

Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, mein Gott,
mein Hort, auf den ich traue,
und mein Erretter in der Not,
mein Fels, darauf ich baue.
Mein Stärk und Burg allein du bist,
darauf ich mich verlasse;
mein Schild und Schutz dein Wort mir ist,
welchs ich im Glauben fasse.

2 Gott ist mein Heil und Lebenskraft,
mein Horn, daruaf ich trotze,
sein Gnadenwort mein Stärk und Saft;
mein Hoffnung ich drauf setze.
Gott ist mein Schatz und Glaubenslicht,
mein Hülf und Trost alleine,
meins Herzen Freud und Zuversicht;

mir allzeit wollest geben.

4 Gott heilger Geist, dein Gnad verleih,
daß ich dies Wort behalte,
daß mein Glaub nicht sei Heuchelei,
die Lieb auch nicht erkalte.
Gott, du heilge Dreifaltigkeit,
dein Kraft mich wöll bewahren,
und stärk meins Fleisches Blödigkeit,
wenn ich von hinn soll fahren.

Herzlich deine zehn Gebot ich lieb

Here is my translation of the catechetical hymn “Hertzlich deine zehn Gebot ich lieb” (Bernhard von Derschow, †1639), which aptly covers five chief parts of the Small Catechism, omitting Confession & the Office of the Keys, normally inserted before Holy Communion. The present German form of the text, which serves as the basis for this translation, is a slight reworking by the esteemed Dr. Michael Walther the Elder (1593–1662) which appeared in Walther’s foreword to the hymnwriter Johann Rist’s Neue Musikalische Catechismus-Andachten (Lüneburg: Sternen, 1656). The appointed melody is “Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, O Herr.” Note on this point that the original text has one additional syllable in the first line because the notes slurred in our current version were meant to be sung separately. Thanks to Rev. Armin Wenz for pointing out the text.

THY Ten Commandments, Lord, I love!
Thy Spirit, God, send from above
Within Thy law to keep me,
That I may trust Thee utterly
Nor set a false god next to Thee,
Nor let Thy law escape me,
Lest e’er I take Thy name in vain;
Thy Sabbath let me e’er mantain,
And to my parents honor give,
Nor murder, marriage break, nor thieve!
Lord Jesus Christ,
From lies defend, (x2)
All coveting in me suspend!

2 God’s wrath will not my soul aggrieve—
For in the Father I believe,
Who heav’n and earth did fashion;
And in Christ Jesus, His one Son,
By Holy Ghost conceived, made Man,
Who suffered in His passion,
Was dead and buried, and to hell
Went down, the third day rose as well,
And did to God’s right hand ascend,
Will judge the earth. Thy Spirit lend,
Lord Jesus Christ!
My confidence (x2)
He through Thy Word my soul leads hence.

3. Our Father Thou in heav’n who art,
Thy name be hallowed by each heart,
And, by Thy doctrine reigning,
Thy kingdom come, through th’ Holy Ghost,
Thy will be done ’gainst Satan’s host,
Both sin and flesh restraining.
Give daily bread, nor trouble send,
From want and sudden death defend,
Forgive us all our debts by grace,
Let no temptation turn our pace,
Lord Jesus Christ,
From evils all (x2)
Save us. Amen, it shall befall!

4. That Christians may this hope obtain,
They are baptized without all stain,
In God’s Word bound, enclosèd;
Whoe’er believes and is baptized,
Is saved, and dressed in robes of Christ,
No more by God opposèd.
Faith trusts God’s Word in water blent,
And in this Baptism sees down-sent
The quick’ning Spirit of all grace,
Who to Christ’s death directs our face.
Lord Jesus Christ,
The old man slay, (x2)
That I may live for God alway!

5. But he who frailty finds within,
For his refreshment from all sin,
Christ’s body, blood are given:
He, in and with the bread and wine,
Is truly present, Host divine,
To feed weak souls for heaven;
To save and give them life anew
And means by saying “giv’n for you,”
That they who truly this believe,
This Supper worthily receive.
Lord Jesus Christ,
Thou living Bread (x2)
Let us be now and ever fed!

Vor Gericht Herr Christe steh ich hie

Here is my translation of an additional 4th stanza for the hymn “Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr" (M. Schalling, 1563), which adds the ideas of repentance and resolve for new obedience. The anonymous stanza, according to Wackernagel (III, 789) is found appended to the hymn in the Görlitz Gesangbuch of 1611, p. 957. It is sometimes (as in the Wisconsin German hymnal, Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #351) ascribed to Johann Dilherr (1604–1669), who would have been quite young at its first appearance.

BEFORE Thy court, Lord, I appear,
And kneel to Thee in heart sincere,
And own no other savior;
My sins and my trespasses sore
To death condemn me evermore
And yet I will not waver.
Lord Jesus Christ, Thy blood alone
Doth wash my sins and all atone;
In true repentance and complete
I, trusting, fall down at Thy feet.
Lord Jesus Christ! my thanks to Thee (my thanks to Thee!)
I would do better; help Thou me!

Vor Gricht, Herr Christe, steh ich hie,
zu dir beug ich mein Hertzen Knie,
vermag mir selbst nicht zu rathen.
Mein Sünd und grosse Missethat

ich wil drumb nicht verzagen:
Herr Jesu Christ, dein Blut allein
macht mich von allen Sünden rein,
in rechter wahrer Rew und Buss
gläub ich an dich, fall dir zu fuß.
Herr Jesu Christ, des danck ich dir,
ich will mich bessern, Herr, hilff mir!
