Ihr Christen auserkoren

Here is my translation of the Christmas hymn, “Ihr Christen auserkoren” (Georg Werner, d. 1671), in GGELB #33 with melody assignment “Wacht auf ihr Christen alle” and an anonymous 5th stanza, orignally published in 4 stanzas in the Königsberg Gsb 1650. Fischer notes the first lines come from a Christmas hymn by Albrecht Lesch from the 14th c. (See Wackernagel II, no. 545). The altered lines and additional stanza come from Hanover 1659, quite early and during the author’s lifetime. I include melodies from Crüger’s Praxis 1653 (with bass) and the Dresden Gsb 1656 resp.

YE Christians by God’s favor,
Rejoice most heartily! [Hear news of joy and mirth]
To you is born the Savior,—
Good news for all to see! [He comes to you on earth]
For this in realms above you
The holy angels joy,
And give Him, who doth love you,
Eternal praise on high.

2 The angels’ song rings clearly:
Ye Christians one and all!
Rejoice with joy sincerely
To see the Infant small:
To you this Son is given,
To you salvation comes,
That ye with God in heaven
My have eternal homes.

3 Let no man now be grieving,
For lo, this little child
In love comes for relieving
To save the sin-defiled;
Weep not! For heav’nly pleasure
He brings you, who believe;
Think only on this treasure
And fullest joy receive!

4 Now vengeance hath been wroken [taken]
On all your evil foes,
For Christ hath wholly broken [shaken]
What once did you oppose:
Death, devil, sin, damnation
Lie pow’rless, undermined;
God gives the honored station
To His belov’d mankind.

*5 So, Jesus, we adore Thee,
Thou Victor over hell,
That Thou, from heaven’s glory,
Didst come on earth to dwell:
Our hearts for dwellings borrow,
There bide eternally,
That neither joy nor sorrow
May cut us off from Thee.

Ihr Christen auserkoren!
Hört gute neue Mähr:  [freut euch von Herzen sehr]
Der Heiland ist geboren,
er kömmt auf Erden her. [Recht gute neue Mähr]
Deß freuet sich dort oben
der heilgen Engel Schaar,
die Gott den Vater loben [und…]
deswegen immerdar.

2 So singen sie mit Schalle:
Ihr Christen insgemein! [ingemein]
Freut euch von Herzen alle
ob diesem Kindelein.
Euch, euch ist es gegeben,
euch ist das Heil bereit,
daß ihr bei Gott sollt leben
in steter Seligkeit.

An diesen Schatz gedenket! [daran sollt ihr gedenken]
Er ist der allerbest. [euch freuen auf das best.]

4 Nun seid ihr wohl gerochen
an eurer Feinde Schaar;
denn Christus hat zerbrochen,
was euch zuwider war.
Tod, Teufel, Sünd und Hölle
jetzt liegen ganz geschwächt:
Gott gibt die Ehrenstelle
dem menschlichen Geschlecht.

*5 Drum wir nun auch dich loben,
Jesu, zweistämmger Held!
daß du vom Himmel oben
bist kommen in die Welt:
komm auch in unsre Herzen
und bleib drin für und für,
daß weder Freud noch Schmerzen
uns trennen mag von dir.

Vor Gericht Herr Christe steh ich hie

Here is my translation of an additional 4th stanza for the hymn “Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr" (M. Schalling, 1563), which adds the ideas of repentance and resolve for new obedience. The anonymous stanza, according to Wackernagel (III, 789) is found appended to the hymn in the Görlitz Gesangbuch of 1611, p. 957. It is sometimes (as in the Wisconsin German hymnal, Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #351) ascribed to Johann Dilherr (1604–1669), who would have been quite young at its first appearance.

BEFORE Thy court, Lord, I appear,
And kneel to Thee in heart sincere,
And own no other savior;
My sins and my trespasses sore
To death condemn me evermore
And yet I will not waver.
Lord Jesus Christ, Thy blood alone
Doth wash my sins and all atone;
In true repentance and complete
I, trusting, fall down at Thy feet.
Lord Jesus Christ! my thanks to Thee (my thanks to Thee!)
I would do better; help Thou me!

GERMAN

Vor Gricht, Herr Christe, steh ich hie,
zu dir beug ich mein Hertzen Knie,
vermag mir selbst nicht zu rathen.
Mein Sünd und grosse Missethat
mich ewig zum Todt verdammet hat,
ich wil drumb nicht verzagen:
Herr Jesu Christ, dein Blut allein
macht mich von allen Sünden rein,
in rechter wahrer Rew und Buss
gläub ich an dich, fall dir zu fuß.
Herr Jesu Christ, des danck ich dir,
ich will mich bessern, Herr, hilff mir!
