Ach Herr, wie bist du so getreu

Here is my translation of the hymn on the Office of the Keys, “Ach Herr, wie bist du so getreu” (? Johann Gottfried Olearius, d. 1711), in ELGB #252 (appointed for Apostles’ Days), with title “Thanksgiving for the Keys of the Heavenly Kingdom.” It is not in Fischer’s lexicon. The Gesang- und Gebet-Büchlein (Onolzbach, 1711) has it as no. 112, with author “G. O.,” which suggests Johann Gottfried Olearius. The same indication is given earlier in the Brandenburg Gsb (1685), p. 196. The appointed melody is “Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ.” Note that the German indicates a form different from our usual form, with an extra syllable in the penultimate line.

 

AH, Lord, with love how faithfully
Thou hast Thine own surrounded!
Thou wilt that no man lost should be,
Wherefore Thou here hast founded
The preaching office and the call,
That every Christian, one and all,
Who after Baptism falls in sin
May find again
Restoring from Thy chosen men.

2 Thou gav’st Thy servants pow’r and right
To loose our sin and bind them,
To chasten all men day and night
For sins that stain and blind them.
Who scorns their office and their word
And in his sin lives undeterred,
Must bound unto his judgment be
And surely see
That he is damned eternally!

3 But he who doth his sins confess,
In grace’s day converteth,
And turns again to righteousness,—
No sin his spirit hurteth:
When Holy Absolution clear
From God’s true servant he doth hear
And in firm faith on Christ rely,
His sin thereby
Is pardoned as by God on high.

4 So let us ever praise our God,
With all our heart adore Him,
His worthy preaching-office laud,
And thankful bow before Him.
Let us with joy the Word receive:
Their threats can make us rightly grieve
For God hath put them in His role,
With chas’tning coal
To warn of dangers to our soul.

Ach Herr, wie bist Du so getreu,
gegen Dein Volk auf Erden,
Du willt nicht, daß ein Mensche sei,
der soll verloren werden.
Drum setztst Du ein das Predigt-Amt,
daß Deine Christen allesamt,
die nach der Tauf gefallen sein,
bei den Dienern Dein,
durch Trost sich wiedr aufrichten fein.

2 Dein Dienern giebst Du Macht und Gwalt,
zu lösen und zu binden,
die Leut zu strafen, jung und alt,
von wegen ihrer Sünden.
Wer nun veracht ihr Amt und Wort,
und stets in Sünden fahret fort,
der wird gebunden zum Gericht,
und wird fehlen nicht,
das er verdammt bleibt ewiglich.

3 Wer aber seine Sünd bekennt,
kehrt um in Zeit der Gnaden,
thut Buß;, und sich zum Guten wendt,
dem soll sein Sünd nicht schaden,
wenn er die Absolution
vom Diener Gottes höret an,
und schleußts mit festem Glauben ein,
dem muß Sünd und Pein
als von Gott selbst vergeben sein.

4 Darum laßt uns Gott allezeit
von ganzen Herzen preisen,
und gegn dem werthen Predigt-Amt,
uns dankbarlich erweisen.
Das Wort mit Freuden nehmen an,
ihr Straf zur Buß uns reizen kann,
dieweil sie Gott an seiner Statt
hergesetzet hat,
zu warnen uns für Seelen Schad.
