Wenn man sein Herz gen Himmel wendet

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wenn man sein Herz gen Himmel wendet” (L. Laurentii, 1700), from the author’s Evangelia melodica, for Trinity V.

WHEN heav’n is by the heart attended

Ere to his work the lab’ror go,

The work shall with success be ended,

For Christ, the Blesser, doth bestow

Prosperity, and He alone,

Can lift our worry’s weighing stone.

2 How many to their labor hurry,

And spend all time in anxious thought

And yet for all their grief and worry,

Yea, sweat and care, accomplish naught.

’Tis since, for all their diligence,

They treat God’s Word with negligence.

3 Cast out thy net as God hath willèd,

And at the word of Christ thy Lord,

So shall thy net be quickly fillèd

With blessings from thy Maker poured,

There, in the height of heav’n, is where

Man finds the treasure true and fair.

4 Who doeth thus shall have the blessing

That runneth with abundance o’er,

And without toil or grief distressing

Enclose a multitude and more.

Faith finds the needful thing it seeks

For body_and soul, when Jesus speaks.

5 All things depend, as Peter showeth

By his example, on God’s Word

And all the blessing He bestoweth,

By land or sea—this is assured.

Who looks not to that blessed hand,

Hath built his work on shifting sand.

6 The world would gain itself the blessing,

By human wisdom, might, and main,

And be without God’s hand possessing

But all th’ endeavor is in vain,

For in those stores it finds a curse

And sees how swiftly they disperse.

7 O Jesus, be Thou with me ever

And nevermore depart from me!

Come with Thy bounteous blessing, Savior,

And of my house the treasure be.

Although I am a sinner poor,

My righteousness and wealth restore.

8 Let me seek nothing, Lord, without Thee,

Yea, though it be a little grain,

Let me in labor never doubt Thee,

That Thou my Helper dost remain;

Yea, make me, when I eat and drink

Upon Thy blessing still to think.

9 Let me my labor, as is fitting,

Lord, consecrate unto Thy name,

To Thee the matter e’er committing,

To Thee the glory and the fame;

I know then it will meet success,

And that Thy hand my work will bless.

10 Yea, Lord, display Thy works of wonder,

And in Thy servant blessèd be,

That many now who walk asunder,

Thus edified, may hope in Thee.

Thy Word our blessing let remain

Till we the heav’nly entrance gain.

der Glaub erlangt, was uns gebricht

an Seel und Leib, wenn Jesus spricht.

5 Es ist ja alles doch gelegen,

wie Petri Beispiel macht bekannt,

an Gottes Wort und reichen Segen,

es sei zu Wasser oder Land.

Wer nicht auf diesen Segen schaut,

der hat sein Werk auf Sand gebaut.

6 Die Welt will alle selbst beschicken,

durch eigne Kraft, durch Witz und Kunst,

und sich ohn Gottes Hand beglücken,

allein der Vorsatz ist umsonst,

weil sie den Fluch im Vorrath findt,

so sieht man, daß er bald verschwindt.

7 O Jesu, sei mir stets zugegen,

laß mich mein Arbeit so anfangen,

Here is my translation of the Vocation hymn, “Mein Gott, die Arbeit meiner Hände” (Friedrich Christian Henrici AKA Picander, d. 1764), Ev.-luth. Gsb #568, first in Gottschald’s Universal-Gsb (Leipzig, 1737) marked with the letter “H.” and titled: “For Laborers.” The appointed melody is “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.”

THE labor to my hands appointed,
God, in Thy name I now begin;
Let it be by Thy grace anointed,
As pleases Thee, and free from sin;
In grace assist me constantly,
That so my work may blessed be!

2 Let all things prosper till the ending;
All bitterness of toil hold back;
Give counsel for due comprehending,
Where I the needed wisdom lack;
Keep me from danger and from harm;
Call Thy dear angel host to arm.

3 With health and needed strength indue me,
With reason, patience, sense, and skill,
And when I see Thy goodness to me,
Which doth my heart with gladness fill,
Then govern Thou my joying mind,
That I be not to pride inclined.

4 Let me in Christian wise be running,
Not by the lust of wealth possessed,
With usury, or craft, or cunning,
Lest e’er Thy curse upon me rest,
Consuming all that Thou hast lent,
For such would be due punishment.

5 Grant me good, godly servants ever,
Hard-working, honest, faithful, true,
And let me find Thou art their Savior,
And own Thee, God, their Maker too,
Who over all my fault and debt
Art patient and longsuff’ring yet.

6 Let not my foes in spite and envy
Seek to deny me what I need;
Good, faithful friends in mercy send me,
To help with wisdom, word, and deed.
For all my heart and thinking stand,
Dear Maker, safe within Thy hand.

7 Then when my days of life are ending,
Oh, order Thou my house aright,
Bring me by angels close attending
To dwell with the elect in light,
That I may from my labors rest;
Speak, Yea, O God to my request!

wo ich mir nicht zu rathen weiß;
verhüte Schaden und Gefahr
durch deiner lieben Engel Schaar.

3 Gieb mir Gesundheit, Kraft und Stärke,
Vernunft, Geduld, Geschicklichkeit,

[selbst voller…]

6 Laß böse Neider oder Feinde
mir nicht nach meiner Nahrung stehn,
und mir beständig gute Freunde
mit Rath und That entgegen gehn;
denn aller Herzen und Verstand
hast du, mein Gott, in deiner Hand.

7 Ist dann mein Lebenstag erloschen, [verloschen]
ach, so bestelle selbst mein Haus,
und theile mir den Gnadengroschen
bei deinen Auserwählten aus,
daß ich von meiner Arbeit ruh;
mein lieber Gott, sprich Ja dazu.
