Der Herr von Sina kommen ist

Here is my translation of the canticle paraphrase “Der Herr von Sina kommen ist” (C. Spangenberg, 1582), from his 19th canticle, titled “Moses’ blessing upon Israel, summarized, Deut. 33,” with subtitle: “It is a psalm of praise, glorifying God’s majesty and righteousness, likewise His grace and fatherly love toward men. It teaches how we are to sit at God’s feet, obey, and submit to Him, and which people are fit for the kingdom of God and to be ministers in His church, namely, those who deny themselves and all that they have in the world for the sake of the truth. It prays for the Christian church, for her government, deliverance, protection, blessing, and preservation, and prophesies finally the victory of the faithful and the ruin of the ungodly.” The appointed melody is “Nun freuet euch lieben Christen gmein.”

THE Lord came up from Sinai’s height,
From Seir is He ascended,
From Mount Paran shined forth with might,
And rose with power splendid,
The Lord God came most mightily,
And broke forth with all majesty
And of the saints ten thousands.

2 A fiery law went from His hand,
From God the Lord proceeding,
He loves those in His fear who stand,
His Word and Law well heeding,
And trusting Him in every need.
He keeps them in His hand indeed,
And none from thence can take them.

3 The same shall surely seated be
Before God’s feet low kneeling,
And learn of Him most carefully,
His Word so sweet and healing,
And therein shall rich comfort find,
How God hath them in mercy kind
Saved from sin, death, and devil.

4 Ah, Lord, to Judah’s voice give ear—
Those who in truth confess Thee,
Remove from them all cause of fear,
Who as dear Father bless Thee.
Good rule among the people send,
Their foes’ dominion cause to end,
Soon magnify Thy people.

5 Among them let Thy right and light,
Thy Spirit, clear be ringing,
Nor let them hold Thee in despite,
To Thee most firmly clinging;
Yea, though their best friend here would fain
Draw them apart from Thy good reign,
Still let them heed it never.

6 Who to his parents dares to say
I will not see you ever,
But will his brother cast away,
And seeks alone God’s favor—
He who regards not his own son,
Observes His Word and His alone,
And keeps His cov’nant rightly.

7 They are the teachers who with awe
Will teach His judgments rightly
To Jacob, and Thy holy law
To Isr’el speak not lightly;
Of these the faithful Christian pray’r
Before Thee is as incense e’er,
A sacrifice Thee pleasing.

8 Upon Thy people blessings pour,
On all their earthly treasure;
Their handiwork let evermore
Secure Thy joy and pleasure.
Smite through the back of all their foes
And all that would their way oppose,
That they may rise no longer.

9 Safe let, O Lord, Thy church abide,
And constantly defend us,
That we may ’twixt Thy shoulders ride,
And to Thy grace commend us.
Thy blessing to our country give,
Health and success where’er men live,
That all may thrive and prosper.

10 There is indeed no other God,
Than God the Lord almighty
Who hath in heaven His abode,
Helps those who trust Him rightly,
In cloud resides His majesty,
With mercy will He constantly
Dwell with the poor and lowly.

11 He will drive out our enemy,
And in His wrath destroy them,
And Isr’el’s dwelling safe shall be;
Those who His Word hear gladly
Shall dwell alone and blest abound,
And Jacob’s fountain shall be found
Within a land fruit-bearing.

12 Happy art thou, O Israel!
Who is like thee for splendor?
Through Christ art both blest and well,
He is thy sure Defender,
The sword of victory is thine,
Thy foes in falsehood shall decline,
And thou their heights shalt trample.

GERMAN
Der Herr von Sina kommen ist,
von Seir uns aufgegangen,
von Berge Paran, wie man list,
mit Macht und großen Prangen,
ist Gott der Herr gewaltiglich
hervorgebrochen mächtiglich
mit gar viel tausend Heilgen.

2 Ein ganz feurig Gesetz man findt
zur rechten Hand des Herren,
Wie hat er doch die Menschenkind
so lieb? all die ihn ehren
und ihm im Glauben sind verwandt,
hält er in seiner rechten Hand
niemand kann sie ihm nehmen.

3 Dieselben werden setzen sich
zu ihres Herren Füssen,
und von ihm lernen fleissiglich
sein heilsam Wort so süsse,
und darinn finden reichen Trost
wie sie Gott gnädiglich erlost
vom Teuffel, Tod und Sünden.

4 Ach Herr erhöre Juda stimm,
das sind die dich bekennen,
und all Beschwerung von den nimm,
die sich ihrn Vater nennen,
gib in dem Volk gut Regiment,
mach ihrer Feinde Macht ein End,
laß dein Volk bald gros werden.

5 Bei ihn las bleiben Recht und Licht,
dein Geist unter ihn walte,
daß sie dich ja verleugnen nicht,
sondern fest an dir halten,
ob gleich ihr beste Freunde sie
von dir wöllten abspannen hie,
daß sie sich nicht dran kehren.

6 Wer zu Vater und Mutter spricht,
ich will euch nicht ansehen,
und zum Bruder, ich kenn dich nicht,
will nur bei Gott bestehen,
und wer nicht achtet seinen Sohn,
der wird sein Red behalten schon,
und deinen Bund bewahren.

7 Und das sind denn die Lehrer gut,
die Jacob deine Rechte,
und dein Gesetz heilig und gut,
nützlich lehren dein Knechte,
derselben Christliches Gebet,
ist für dir wie ein Räuchwerk stet,
dir ein gefälligs Opfer.

8 Dein Volk wolltest du segnen fein,
darzu all sein Vermügen,
laß dir die Werk der Hände sein
gefallen mit genügen,
zuschlag den Rücken ihrer Feind,
und aller die ihn wider seind,
daß sie nimmer aufkommen.

9 Laß, Herr, dein Kirchlein sicher sein,
thue über uns stets walten,
das wir zwischen den Schultern dein,
uns an dein Gnade halten,
und gib Segen zu unserm Land,
auch Glück und Heil zu allem Stand,
das alles wohl gerathe.

10 Es ist fürwahr kein ander Gott,
denn der Gott der Gerechten,
der sein Wohnung im Himmel hat,
hilft der frommen Geschlchte,
in Wolken ist sein Herrlichkeit,
mit Gnaden will er allezeit
under den Armen wohnen.

11 Austreiben wird er unser Feind,
und sie im Zorn verstören,
Israels Wohnung sicher seind,
all die sein Wort gern hören,
die werden wohnen fein allein,
so wird auch Jacobs Brunnen sein
in eim fruchtbaren Lande.

12 Wohl dir Israel, denn wer ist
auf Erden deinesgleiche,
durch Christum du ganz selig bist,
sein Hilf und Gnad ist reiche,
der Sieg dir wird immer zutheil,
dein Feinde schlahen stets ein Fehl,
auf ihr Höh wirst rein treten.

O Herre Gott, ich schrei zu dir

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “O Herre Gott, ich schrei zu dir” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm LXI, Exaudi Deus, with title “Psalm of supplication for the preservation of Christians and for authorities.” The Aeolian melody by Waldis follows the meter 87.87.447.447. Heugel’s Tenor line give it some rhythmic variation. Zahn seems to have omitted it, at least from his index. I present the melody therefore in both the original pitch and transposed down.

O LORD, my God, I cry to Thee
Here on this earth in my distress;
Deign graciously to come to me,
Confusion doth my heart possess.
There is no one / to hear me groan
Or hear my lamentation.
Unless Thou give / balm, and relieve,
I fall in trepidation.

2 Thou art my Hope and shelter sure!
Lord build me on Thy rock more strong.
Then shall I foes’ assaults endure,
If on Thy grace my hope be hung.
I certainly / fear naught with Thee;
There none may hopeless make me;
Thou mighty tow’r, / they’ve lost their pow’r
Who fain would overtake Thee.

3 To be with Thee, O Lord, is good,
THou highest God and refuge true;
In Thy dear Christian brotherhood,
Where Thy Word e’er is heard as due,
Thou wilt abide / through time and tide,
And ’neath Thy wings wilt keep us.
Defend us, Lord, / from guiling word;
False teachers let not reap us!

4 O Lord our God, Thou well repay’st
Those who Thy name fear and revere;
Therefore Thou oughtest to be praised,
Thou mak’st Thy help to us appear.
Great is Thy grace / in every place,
Its door stands open ever;
And he that knocks / thus heav’n unlocks,
And is deceivèd never.

5 Thy hand doth for the king provide;
When Thou dost him in life defend,
And worldly realms by Thee abide
In goodly peace until the end.
Concord sustain / with those that reign,
And give to them Thy blessing,
All men to keep, / awake, asleep,
A peaceful life possessing.

6 Let us, O Lord, be e’er sustained
By Thy great mercy, love, and grace,
As Thy high wisdom hath ordained;
This pray we, Lord, before Thy face;
So will we praise / Thy name always,
Thy glories ever voicing,
And all Christ’s host / from coast to coast
Sing their Amen, rejoicing.

Erhör dich bald in höchster Noth

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Erhör dich bald in höchster Noth” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm XX, Exaudiat te Dominus, with title “A psalm of supplication for authorities, that God would grant the government prosperity and victory against the enemy.” Waldis’s second version of this Psalm seems to stem from an earlier time, following Luther’s shorter meter, 87.87.887.

THE Lord hear thee in time of need,
In trouble, fear, and sorrow,
The God of Jacob succor speed,
And strength both eve and morrow,
Send help from heaven’s majesty,
From Zion keep and shelter thee!
He is the Lord forever.

2 The Lord behold most graciously
Thy heart’s pure off’ring given,
Thy mouth’s sure testament let be
Received with grace from heaven,
Thy broken spirit let suffice
As His most precious sacrifice,
And count it all His pleasure.

3 Grant thee according to thine heart
And speed Thy counsels willing,
Success unto thy wish impart,
All prospr’ously fulfilling;
His glory on this earthly way
Bestow good fortune every day!
This all for thee we ask Him.

4 Thy pow’r and saving help we praise,
Thou art our faithful Savior;
Our banner of warfare we raise,
Help us regret it never;
The foe with sword and fire afflicts,
By poison and all monstrous tricks;
Therefore must be watching.

5 Now know I well that God the Lord
Whom he anoints, sustaineth;
With mighty hand shall help afford
Pow’r o’er his end maintaineth.
And keep him from the cunning foe.
Lord Jesus Christ, this all bestow!
All in His hands abideth.

6 With horse and chariot strongly wrought,
The wicked make resistance,
But in such danger we will not
Despair of Thine assistance.
In Thee, O Lord, we comfort take,
It shall not disappointed make;
In Thee will be confiding.

7 They are cast down and utterly
In ruin laid, confounded,
Who would God’s persecutors be
And oft His Word had hounded,
With hellish murder, ban, and hate;
Now are they fallen, small and great,
But we still stand unshaken.

8 The mighty God shall surely save
The servant He selected,
And hear our pray’r for which we crave;
Foes’ threats shall be deflected.
Help, mighty King, Thy people spare,
In mercy hear us now and e’er,
When we, Lord, call upon Thee.

9 All glory to Almighty God,
The Father of all kindness,
And Jesus Christ, who bore the rod
From bondage to unbind us,
And th’ Holy Ghost, the Couns’lor dear,
Who while our life abideth here,
To life eternal guides us!

Wann unser oberkeit in Noth

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Wann unser oberkeit in Noth” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm XX (first of two paraphrases), with title “A psalm of supplication for authorities and temporal government against the persecution of the enemies.” The Dorian melody by Waldis follows the meter 87.87.44.77. Zahn notes that later hymnals used the melody for Waldis’s Psalm 150 “Lobt Gott in seinem Heiligthum.”

WHEN those who rule us meet dismay,
To fear and anguish driven,
We call on God and earnest pray
That vict’ry may be given,
To keep us safe / from foes who chafe,
From their devices clever,
In tender love and favor.

2 May He grant help and good success
For those His way proceeding,
Grant them their wish, their life to bless,
Their heartfelt counsels heeding.
May He deny / not their heart’s sigh,
That they may boast forever
Of all His grace and favor.

3 So may they high their banners raise,
To God’s name giving glory,
And in God’s confidence always
Proclaim the Gospel story,
And may His hand / make us to stand,
And save with power holy,
Though in a manner lowly.

4 But those who only wish to cry
Of armor, horse, and chariot,
Know not that they shall fall and die,
Destruction only merit.
But certain we / in God shall be,
Who hears our faith’s petition,
And puts foes to perdition.

¶ The Father and His dearest Son,
True God, adore we ever,
With God the Spirit, Three in One!
May He let us not waver,
But by the Word / keep undeterred
Our step both here and yonder,
With saints in heav’nly wonder.

Von Gnad und Recht soll singen

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Von Gnad und Recht soll singen” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm CI, Misericordiam et judicium, with title “Mirror of rulers . . . A psalm of David” and melody assignment “Hilf Gott, daß mir gelinge.” Luther writes of the psalm,

It is a psalm of instruction wherein David makes himself an example showing how good courtiers should behave and not tolerate wicked ministers. Hence he relates the faults and vices of a wicked servant which we have clarified at length in our commentary on this psalm. This is what he calls singing about grace and justice (v. 1), that is, how he is gracious to the upright and punishes the wicked. And how a servant should be active and shun evil, and how it turned out with him in that regard, he shows well in Absalom, Ahithophel, Joab, &c. For whoever would make people good and keep them so must needs invite upon him all hatred and spite. Therefore he might well sing to God and give thanks to Him, who has given him such grace and justice. For if God does not give it, such a song will remain unsung, and instead there will be utter scolding and cursing in one’s house, and at court nothing but hanging and losing heads, &c.

OF GRACE and judgment holy,
O Lord, my lips would sing;
Thy pow’r and wisdom solely
A good result can bring;
I would my matter wisely phrase
And deal with all men truly
In all my life and ways.

2 At home my conversation
Is faithful, without fraud;
I seek no occupation
That would displease my God.
I hate the works of those who turn,
Nor let them dwell beside me
Who dare God’s Word to spurn.

3 The froward, unconverted,
Must all depart from me;
I shun the heart perverted
That turns, O Lord, from Thee.
Whoso his neighbor doth betray
And with his tongue doth slander,
I cut him off straightway!

4 Those who high glances offer
And have a prideful heart,
I will as friends not suffer;
Let them from me depart!
Mine eyes with great desire shall be
On countrymen more faithful,
That they may dwell with me.

5 Those who with me are dwelling
And would my servants be
Shall never lies be telling,
But deal e’er truthfully;
My court receiveth men upright.
Deceivers shall not prosper
Nor tarry in my sight.

6 All those injustice preaching
Shall not live long with me.
Idolatry, false teaching
I cut off instantly,
That wicked doers may not gain
A foothold in the city
And in the Lord’s domain.

Gott mein Geschrei erhöre

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Gott mein Geschrei erhöre” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm LXI, Exaudi Deus deprecationem, with title “Long live the King . . . A psalm of David to sing before [the people] to the playing of strings” and melody assignment “Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn.” Of the psalm, Vierling writes (Biblia, 754),

It is a psalm of supplication against the enemies and especially in behalf of the king and authorities, that they may fear God and enjoy a long reign, nor that the rule of law may be destroyed by enemies and warfare. For Solomon also says that because of the sin of the land, many and various princes come, but where there are many lords, it seldom fails that what one builds up, the other breaks down, according to the saying, Nova rex, nova lex. And indeed, changes in political governance have always been dangerous and harmful. But blessed it is where it is abides in lengthy and venerable goodness.

GOD, hear my cry, I bid Thee,
Attend unto my pray’r,
Of all my anguish rid me,
Of worry and despair!
Amid earth’s many offenses,
My heart and mind and senses,
O Lord, are turned to Thee.

2 My needful help provide me,
My rock and fortress be,
Within Thy shelter hide me
Safe from the enemy!
Within Thy house forever
I’ll praise Thy grace and favor,
And in Thy wings I’ll trust.

3 My vows, O God, Thou hearest,
And givest rich reward,
To all who hold Thee dearest,
And, fearing, name Thee Lord.
Thy king shall long be living
By Thy most gracious giving,
And evermore abide.

4 Thy grace his crown surroundeth,
Thy glories him enfold,
Thy truth on him aboundeth,
And doth his reign uphold,
I will sing praise before Thee
And give Thy name all glory,
And all my vows perform!

Der Herr erhör dich in der Noth

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Der Herr erhör dich in der Noth” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm XX, Exaudiat te Dominus, with melody assignment “Es woll uns Gott genädig sein.”

Vierling (Biblia, 718) writes on the Psalm, “It is a psalm of supplication and prays properly for emperors, kings, princes, and all who sit in worldly authority, that God would grant them grace to reign peaceably and to have success and victory against their enemies. For if good secular government depended on the reason and strength of princes and lords, we would not have to pray so earnestly and heartily for them. But that we pray for them shows that it is only the greatest fools and they who are utterly blind who presume to govern land and people out of their own head. It pertains to the Second Commandment, like all psalms of supplication, for there God’s name is called upon, and to the Third Petition, where God’s will and not the devil’s is to be done.

THE Lord hear thee in days of need,
The name of God defend thee,
Help from His holy places speed,
And strength in mercy lend thee
To Him thy service pleasing be,
Which to His praise aspireth;
The Lord thy will perform for thee,
And what thy heart desireth,
Thy counsel all fulfilling.

2 We boast in Thee, O God, our Stay,
And in Thy name most holy
Set up our banners, work and pray,
Thou hear’st our sighing lowly;
And Thy salvation shineth clear
To Thine anointed given,
When Thy right hand upholds us here,
And from Thy holy heaven
Thy grace is manifested.

3 In horse and chariot much they trust
Who threaten and deride us;
But we remember, yea, and boast,
That God doth fight beside us;
His name consoles our little band;
Through Him we are victorious,
They’re fallen, but we upright stand
And thank our King all-glorious,
And trust in His salvation.

Nun hör, du Christlich Oberkeit

Here is my translation of the vocation (or 4th Commandment) hymn “Nun hör, du Christlich Oberkeit” (P. Herbert, 1566), of which stanzas 1-4 are directed at the vocation of government and authority, and stanza 5 at the vocation of subject. In Ludecus (1589) it is indicated as two separate hymns both appointed for Trinity XXIII, and in view of its size this is surely a good practice. The melody is given from Kirchengeseng (1566). Some discretion may be called for in determining appropriate places for natural pauses as no rests are indicated in the notation (which is not strange, since it appears to be an adaptation of a Gregorian melody).

NOW HEAR, ye Christian rulers wise,
Attend and hear (God’s Wisdom cries),
For it is I who lift you high.
Who set a crown upon your head.
Yea, by My will each throne I fill,
And share with you by grace undue
My honor, pow’r, and glory dread,
That ye may govern your domain
And all your people’s rights sustain,
And by the sword defend and ward
Their wealth, possessions, life, and blood;
For one and all, both great and small,
The law dispense, drive evil hence,
Avenge the wrong, and love the good.
Ye “gods” are called by My consent,
And stewards of My government,
And gracious lords also:
Therefore mercy show.

2. I give you justice, rule, and bound;
This is My will, your solid ground.
Uphold these laws, defend the cause
Of orphans poor especially.
And justice do, as servants true,
All bribes refuse, true judgment use,
For I regard the peasant’s plea.
On tyranny do not be bent,
I hear the groaning man’s lament;
Who proud would be, opposeth Me,
And quickly shall he feel My blow;
With mighty thrust into the dust
I’ll cast him down and take his crown,
As often now and long ago.
Take heed of Pharaoh’s grievous lot,
And all that I for Ahab wrought
And how I sealed the great
Neb’chadnezzar’s fate.

3. But chiefly as ye exercise
Your rule in manner good and wise,
Ye shall secure and harbor pure
My glory and My Word divine,
As guidance for both rich and poor,
To govern all, whate’er their call,—
The congregation which is Mine.
Thus let yourselves be rightly taught,
Serve Me with fear as servants ought,
My statutes learn, their wealth discern;
Kiss Jesus, lest He angry be;
By deed adore Him evermore,
Direct your way and all ye say,
That ye not die eternally.
Unto My holy Church are ye
Both nurse and nurturer to be;
In virtue raise the youth,
Christ to serve in truth.

4. Now lay your crown before the throne
Of Christ the Lamb, My dearest Son,
Nor count it shame to voice His name,
But Him confess at every hour,
And, flinging wide the gate of pride,
Receive the Lord of every lord,
With all submission to His pow’r.
Cede not the pow’rs that ye are giv’n
To th’ Antichrist, the foe of heav’n,
But fight him well, his forces quell,
And bow not to the cruel beast
Who hath so long by many a wrong
Held fast his place and hid God’s grace,
And now would see His wealth increased.
I give your heart the weaponry
To war against his tyranny,
My honor to redress,
For your blessedness.

5. Now hear, ye subjects by My grace,
How all should act within their place!
For I, the Lord, have giv’n the sword
To rulers for My glory’s sake,
So hold them dear, in love and fear
Obey them well as here ye dwell,
Save where My worship is at stake.
Pay unto each their tributes due
With tax for grace and honor true,
And beg of Me My clemency,
That ye may live in peace and rest.
So that My name with loud acclaim
May far and wide be magnified
Both now and unto ages blest.
I am who makes, by drawing near,
The eye to see and ear to hear,
So that My will alone
Ever may be done.

drum erbarmt euch gern.

2. Ich schreib euch vor Recht, Maß und Ziel,
darnach halt euch das ist mein Will,
schützt Land und Leut, / in Sonderheit,
nehmt euch der armen Waisen an;
und richtet recht / als treue Knecht,
nehmt kein Geschenk, das euch ablenk,
denn ich sorg für die Unterthan.
Drum übt bei Leib kein Tyrannei,
ich hör der Seufzenden Geschrei,
wer sich erhebt / mir widerstrebt,
der muß gar schnell zu Boden gehn:
ich stürz ihn bald / mit meiner Gwalt,
vom Stuhl hinab / sammt aller Hab,
wie viel und oftmal ist geschehn.
Den König Pharao seht an,
und was ich Achab hab gethan,
und wie verstossen war
Nebucad Nezar.

3. Voraus aber sollt ihr zugleich
in euer Herrschaft, Land und Reich
mein Göttlich Ehr und reine Lehr
stets fürdern und erhalten rein,
zum Fürbild sein beid Groß und Klein
wie das Aug ziert den Leib regiert
so sollt ihr thun in der Gemein.
So lasset euch nun weisen recht,
dient mir mit Furcht als meine Knecht,
lernt mein Gesetz / drin sind die Schätz,
küßt den Sohn, daß er nicht ergrimmt;
gläubt all an ihn, / dient ihm forthin,
richt euer Weg / und all Anschläg
dermassen daß ihr nicht umkömmt.
Ihr sollt der Christlichen Gemein
beid Pfleger und Seugammen sein,
die Jugend wohl aufziehn,
das sie Christo dien.

4. Ihr sollt ablegen euer Kron,
vor dem Lamm, meinem lieben Sohn,
euch nicht schämen, ihn annehmen,
und frei bekennen allezeit,
die Thor aufthun zum Eigenthum,
und den HErren / aller Herren
empfahn mit Unterthänigkeit.
Die Macht so euch gegeben ist,
nicht darreichen dem Widerchrist,
sondern kämpfen / und ihn dämpfen,
so werdt ihr nicht das grausam Thier,
welchs so viel Jahr / mit großer Fahr
regieret hat / ohn alle Gnad,
un nun soll nehmen sein Gebühr.
Ich gib euch selbst in euer Herz,
ihn angzugreifen ohne Scherz,
zu meiner Herrlichkeit,
und euer Seligkeit.

damit mein Will gescheh,
mein Ordnung besteh.

Allmächtiger ewiger Gott (der du die Welt…)

Here is my translation of the hymn “Allmächtiger ewiger Gott (der du die Welt…).” The parenthesis is to distinguish it from another Bohemian Brethren hymn, the prayer for those under papal tyranny, entitled “Allmächtiger ewiger Gott, der du nach deinem besten Rath.” Our hymn, an anonymous contribution which also appears in the Bohemian Brethren hymnal of 1566 (and again in 1606), was appointed by Ludecus (1598) for Trinity XXIII. I give the melody from 1566 below.

ALMIGHTY and eternal God
Great King of earth and heaven!
From whom the scepter and the rod,
Of government are given.
Who makest rulers rise and fall,
O Lord of lords who rulest all,
Both hour and season changing.

2. Grant Christendom in every place,
According to Thy pleasure
Wise, pious rulers, that Thy grace
May flourish without measure.
Let those who lead accept from Thee
Their pow’r, and use it fittingly,
With kindness and devotion.

3. Bestow on them Thy Spirit bold
With wisdom to imbue them.
That in them Christ may be extolled
And do His pleasure through them.
Their hearts Thou holdest in Thy hand,
So help them to enrich the land
And crush the devil’s kingdom.

4. Grant subjects also faith in Thee,
And faithfulness in labors,
First serving God, then family,
Authorities, and neighbors.
Help all to live in love and peace,
And head and body to increase
In service to Thy glory.
