Heut verneut die Christenheit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Heut verneut die Christenheit” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for Advent I.

Mel.: Nun komm der Heiden Heiland.
 

   

ON this day the church anew
Doth her yearly round pursue,
And the fount whence all is poured
Is the advent of our Lord.

2 Now to Zion rideth He,
That her heart may joyful be.
Glad is Salem, peace’s home,
Since her King to her doth come.

3 Just and righteous comes that King,
Who doth save from Satan’s sting,
Comes in form of mortal poor,
His creation to restore.

4 In this advent cause is had
Why we Christians may be glad
And with many a joyful chord
Find delight in Christ the Lord.

5 Where He cometh not, oh, there
Dwells no gladness, but despair!
Yea, there may not in the least
Be a holy day and feast.

6 There is naught but heresy
’Neath the devil’s tyranny,
Sin and shame, disease and woe,
And eternal death below.

7 From these ills hath Christ our Lord
By His advent all restored,
And new feasts of gladness brought,
To recount His mercies wrought.

8 Sing Hosanna, blessed be
He that cometh graciously
In the Lord’s name unto us!
Ever may we praise Him thus!

9 Praise the Father, Christendom,
Who His Son hath caused to come,
As the Spirit’s words attest,
In like glory ever blest! Amen.

Heut verneut die Christenheit
ihre jahrfestliche zeit,
welcher aller Anfang ist,
die Zukunft des Herren Christ.

2 Da er zu Zion einreit,
davon sie sollt haben Freud,
und jauchzen Jerusalem,
weil ihr König zu ihr käm,

3 Ein König, der gerecht ist,
und heilet der Schlangen Biß,
in armer Menschen Gestalt,
daß er sein Geschöpf erhalt.

4 Diese Zukunft macht allein,
daß wir Christen fröhlich sein,
und begehn manch Freuden fest,
allein in dem Herren Christ.

5 Wo derselb nicht kömmet hin,
da kann keine Freude sein,
ja kein recht heiliger Tag,
oder FEst je werden mag.

6 Sondern eitel Ketzerei
in des Satans Tyrannei,
Sünd und Schand, Krankheit und Noth,
Herzenleid, ewiger Tod.

7 Darvon hat uns Jesus Christ,
durch sein zukunft all erlöst.
und manch Freudenfest gemacht,
da man sein Wohlthat betracht.

8 Hosianna drum man singt,
gelobet sei der da kömmt
im Namen des Herrn zu uns,
es währt ewiglich sein Gunst.

9 Ehr sei Gott dem Vater drum,
von ihm sein Sohn zu uns kömmt,
wies der heilig Geist bezeigt,
gleich gepreist in Ewigkeit. Amen.
