Es woll uns Gott genädig sein / zum neuen Kirchenjahre

 Here is my translation of the hymn, “Es woll uns Gott genädig sein / zum neuen Kirchenjahre” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Advent I, inspired by Luther’s paraphrase of Psalm 67. Like his hymns for Trinity XXVII, the theme of the church year is more in focus than the Gospel proper, with a focus on the Word of God to be read and preached throughout the coming year.

Mel.: Es woll uns Gott genädig sein.

AS we the new church year begin
May God to us be gracious,
And keep for us both pure and clean
His Holy Word most precious,
And by His Word and Spirit move
Our faith, His strength bestowing,
That it may ever active prove
In all good works, thus showing
A faith sincere and Christian.

2 Thus they who love this treasure best
Thank Thee, God, and adore Thee,
For thus we may ourselves call blest
Here and fore’er before Thee.
Man’s reason, by its guiling ways,
Can bring no man to heaven.
But what God’s Word to us displays—
Thereby to us is given
The right way to discover.

3 O God, let every Christian heart
And mouth, with life empowered,
All praise and thanks to Thee impart
For all Thy blessings showered!
May no day in the year go by
When I neglect Thy favor,
Until before Thy face on high
I shall rejoice forever
With all the angels. Amen.

Es woll uns Gott genädig sein,
zum neuen Kirchenjahre,
daß er uns unversfälscht und rein
sein theures Wort bewahre.
Ach durch sein Wort und seinen Geist
woll er den Glauben stärken,
daß sich derselbe thätig weist
in allen guten Werken
zum wahren Christenthume.

2 So danken, Gott, und loben dich,
die solchen Schatz erkennen.
Dadurch wir hier und ewiglich
uns mögen selig nennen.
Vernunft, die sich mir selbst betreugt,
kann nicht zum Himmel bringen.
Was aber Gottes Wort uns zeigt,
dadurch wirds uns gelingen,
den rechten Weg zu finden.

3 Es danke, Gott, und lobe dich,
für alle deinen Segen
ein jeder Christ, bei welchem sich
noch Herz und Lippen regen.
Kein Tag vergeh im Jahre nicht,
der nicht dein Lob verneue,
bis ich vor deinem ANgesicht
mich unaufhörlich freue
mit allen Engeln. Amen.
