Gewiß mein Herr Gott siehet mich

Here is my translation of the canticle paraphrase, “Gewiß mein Herr Gott siehet mich” (C. Spangenberg, 1583), titled “The Psalm of Hagar the Maidservant of Sarah, Gen. 16,” with subtitle “It is a psalm of thanksgiving that God regards us in our distress. It teaches us that no one sees God but He sees us first; and what the true fountain of life is.” The appointed melody is “Erhalt uns Herr bei deinem Wort.”

IN truth, Lord God, Thou seest me,
And I have seen Thee certainly:
I looked here after God, and lo,
He seeth my distress and woe!

2 My joys are more than I can count,
For I have found the living Fount:
God in mine anguish seeth me,
And He shall help me constantly.

GERMAN
Gewiß mein Herr Gott siehet mich,
und wiederum so hab auch ich
gesehen wahrlich meinen Gott,
der mich ansah in meiner Noth.

2 Drum ich von Herzen freu mich nun,
das ich den lebendigen Brunn,
mein Gott, in meiner Angst gesehn,
der wirt mir allzeit fort beistehn.
