Gesegnet sein dem höchsten Gott

Here is my translation of the canticle paraphrase, “Gesegnet sein dem höchsten Gott” (C. Spangenberg, 1582), based on Melchizedek’s Song in Genesis 14, with title, “Psalm of thanksgiving that God has overcome our enemies and delivered us out of the their hand, and cast them down.” The canticle is the first entry to the second part of Cyriacus Spangenberg’s Der gantze Psalter Davids, Darneben alle andere Psalmen und Geistliche Lieder, im alten und newen Testament, sampt vielen Dancksprüchen der lieben Heyligen Gesangsweise gefasset durch M. Cyriacum Spangenberg (Frankfurt/Main, 1582), that is, The whole psalter of David along with all other psalms and spiritual songs in the Old and New Testaments, together with many expressions of thanks of the dear saints, put into song form by Master Cyriacus Spangenberg.” The appointed melody is “Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ.”

 

BLEST be unto our God most high
All men, whom He doth supply
With rescue from the enemy!
The Lord of heav’n and earth is He:
Kyrieleis!

Blest be our most high God in heav’n,
Who the enemy hath giv’n
By His own might into our hand,
And left us not in shame to stand:
Kyrieleis!

Errettet von der Feinde Schwert,

Gelobet sei der fromme Gott,
der die Feind beschlossen hat
durch seine Macht in unser Hand,
und uns behüt für Sünd und Schand,
