O heilge Fluth, o kräftig Blut

Here is my translation of the Baptism hymn, “O heilge Fluth, o kräftig Blut!” (Landgravine Anna Sophia of Hessia-Darmstadt, d. 1683), in ELGB #297, first published in the authoress’s Der treue Seelen-Freund Christus Jesus . . . (Jena, 1658) in 13 stanzas (the last is the same as the first), with the title “Contemplation hymn on the mighty operations which re found in the holy washing of Baptism by the blood of Jesus Christ.” One stanza (6) is omitted in the Buffalo Synod version, perhaps because of its suggestion that angels convey the Christian’s prayer to God (but cf. Rev. 8:3–4). The appointed melody is “Ach Gott und Herr.”

O HOLY flood!
O mighty blood!
Thou, thou hast now unbound me
From sin and hell
And death as well,
And with new life hast crowned me.

2 As Jordan’s tide
Once purified
Old Naaman’s body ailing,
Thou, Lord, didst foil
Sin’s wound and boil
And gav’st me help availing.

3 The precious word
Of God the Lord
Out of the heavens soundeth:
Thou art My Son,
My dearest one,
In whom My joy aboundeth.

4 God’s Son in love
From heav’n above
Came down to be my Savior.
No time or place,
Joy or disgrace
Will drive Him from me ever.

5 The Spirit here
Showed mercy clear
As dovelike down He floated,
His grace I’ll find
In heart and mind,
Which are to Him devoted.

*6 The angel choir
With true desire
Shall to my aid be flying,
And bring the Lord
With glad accord
My ceaseless pray’rs and sighing.

7 Thou art the flood
Of mighty God
Out of the Temple flowing,
That heals indeed
With mighty speed
The nations to Thee going.

8 The brook thou art
That mends the heart
That makes all sorrows vanish.
That guilt and shame
(as is God’s aim)
All perfectly doth banish.

9 While we draw breath,
And after death,
Thy waters give all pleasure;
Thy quick’ning dew
Doth strength renew
And e’er shall be my treasure.

10 Thou canst o’erwhelm
The serpent’s realm
And scatter every devil,
And soon dispel
Both sin and hell
And all Thou callest evil.

11 Whoe’er his foot
In faith shall put
Into Thy healing river
By Thee is charmed,
And no more harmed
By Satan’s host forever.

12 As I behold
Thy works of old
And those Thou still art doing,
I must adore
Thee more and more,
Thy glories e’er renewing.

13 O Holy flood!
O mighty blood!
Thou, thou hast now unbound me
From sin and hell
And death as well,
And with new life hast crowned me.

GERMAN

1 O heilge Fluth!
o kräftig Blut!
Du, Du hast mich befreiet
von Sünden-Koth,
von Höll und Tod,
Du hast mich ganz erneuet.

2 Wie der Jordan
den Naemann
von Ausatz konnte heilen;
so halfest Du
in einem Nu
mir von den Sünden-Beulen.

3 Der höchste Hort
ließ auch sein wort
alsbald dabei erschallen:
Du bist mein Kind,
an dem ich find
ein lieblich Wohlgefallen.

4 Des Höchsten Sohn
vons Himmels-Thron
kam, um bei mir zu bleiben.
Kein Ort noch Zeit,
kein Leid noch Freud,
wir ihn nun von mir treiben.

5 er heilge Geist
in Gnad erweist,
wie er stets wolle schweben
mit seiner Güt
in dem Gemüth,
das ich ihm hab ergeben.

*6 Der Engelschaar
will immerdar
zu meinen Diensten stehen
und Gott dem Herrn
anmelden gern
mein unaufhörlich flehen.

7 Du bist die Fluth,
die aus der Hut
des Tempels kam gelaufen,
die machte Heil
in kurzer eil
viel großer Völker Haufen.

8 Du bist der Bach,
der alles Ach,
der alles Weh abwäschet,
der unsre Schuld
durch Gottes Huld,
ganz und vollkommen löschet.

9 Dein Wasser giebt,
was uns beliebt
hier und in jenem Leben;
Dein starker Saft
hat neue Kraft
mir jederzeit gegeben.

10 Du kannst zugleich
durchs Teufels-Reich,
durch alles Uebel reißen,
durch Höll und Sünd,
und was man findt,
das uns kann schädlich heißen.

11 Wer seinen Fuß
in Deinen Fluß
mit wahrem Glauben setzet,
der wird nicht mehr
vom Satans-Heer
hier oder dort verletzet.

12 Je mehr ich merk
auf Deine Werk,
Die Du pflegst zu vollbringen,
je mehr muß ich
auch loben Dich
und Dir zu Ehren singen:

13 O heilge Fluth,
o kräftig Blut,
Du, Du hast mich befreiet,
vom Sünden-Koth,
von Höll und Tod,
Du Du hast mich verneuet.

Jesu, stärke meinen Glauben

Here is my translation of the trust hymn, “Jesu, stärke meinen Glauben” (Anna Sophie of Hessia-Darmstadt, d. 1683), in ELGB #268, originally appearing in the authoress’s Der treue Seelenfreund Christus Jesus (Jena, 1658) on the 11th spiritual meditation, “Of faith as the fourth means by which we enter Jesus’ family.” This chapter is accompanied by two hymns with the introduction “Hereupon two hymns, in the first of which a Christ-loving soul thanks his Jesus for faith; and in the second, prays for increase of faith.” Our hymn is the second. (Thus far Fischer.) The appointed melody is “Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele.”

STRENGTHEN Thou my faith, O Jesus,
That it may not shaken be
By opinion’s aimless breezes;
Let it, from dissembling free,
Only in Thy Word abide
Changeless through all time and tide,
Thereon in reliance plant me
And to hold it firmly, grant me.

2 Then, if Satan seek to snare me,
What to me are all his cords?
How should flames of Hades scare me?
I am free from all their hordes.
For Thou, Jesus, art with me,
Therefore I abide with Thee.
Suffer me to leave Thee never;
I would stay with Thee forever.

3 Let Thy Spirit rule and guide me,
Lord, according to Thy Word
And with wisdom’s light provide me,
Refuge by no tempest stirred!
Thou in faith dost me uphold
’Gainst the devil, sin, and world;
Though they seek to bite and rend me,
Thou canst easily defend me.

4 Thou wilt set the crown of glory
On my head forevermore;
Thou wilt honor me before Thee
And unbar the heav’nly door.
Lord, by Thee my soul was bought;
I believe and doubt this not:
Yonder Thou wilt also give me
Joy where nothing shall aggrieve me.

GERMAN
Jesu stärke meinen Glauben,
daß er nicht gegründet sei
auf zerbrochne Meinungs-Schrauben,
daß er ohne Heuchelei
bleib allein bei Deinem Wort
unverrücket fort und fort,
daß ich mich darauf verlasse,
und mit festem Glauben fasse.

2 Dann mag Satan Netze stellen,
was frag; ich nach seinem Strick?
ja, was frag ich nach der Höllen,
ich bin frei von ihrer Tück;
denn Du, Jesu, bist bei mir,
drum bleib ich auch stets bei Dir,
laß mich nichts von Dir abtreiben,
ich will treulich bei Dir bleiben.

3 Laß mich Deinen Geist regieren,
liebster Herr, nach Deinem Wort,
und auf Deinen Wegen führen,
denn Du bist mein treuer Hort,
der im Glauben mich erhält,
wider Teufel, Sünd und Welt;
wenn sie noch so gräulich wüthen,
kannst du mich doch wohl behüten.

4 Du, Du wirst die Ehren-Crone
ungezweifelt schenken mir,
Du wirst mir zum Gnaden-Lohne
thuen auf die Himmelsthür.
Herr, ich bleibe Dir verpflicht,
Herr, ich glaub und zweifle nicht,
Du wirst mir nach diesem Leben,
auch des Himmels Freude geben.

Jesu, Jesu, du mein Leben

Here is my translation of the Christian Life (sanctification) hymn, “Jesus, Jesus, du mein Leben” (Anna Sophie Landgravess of Hessia-Darmstadt, d. 1683), from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #407. It is found in altered form beginning “Jesu, Jesu, du mein Leben / meine Liebe, Kraft und Heil,” and of course not to be confused with “Jesus, Jesus, nichts als Jesus.” The text is first found in the Landgravess’s devotional Der treue Seelenfreund Christus Jesus (Jena, 1658). In an appendix the title is given as: “Devotional hymn in which a believing soul surrenders to the Lord Jesus all parts of her body.” The hymn, says Fischer, is often erroneously ascribed to J. L. Winter. The appointed melody is “Freu dich sehr, O meine Seele.” Proper melodies have, however, been made for it, such as found in Geistliche Seelenlust:

JESUS, Jesus, Life I hail Thee!
Jesus, Savior Thou alone,
With what thing shall I regale Thee,
Dearest Portion that I own?
I will give myself to Thee
Jesus, fairest crown to me!
Let me be my contribution—
Naught shall bend my resolution.

2 Take my heart for Thy possesssion,
Let it be Thy very own;
Even hell’s most fierce aggression
And all stings that make me groan
Shall not turn me e’er from Thee,
Thine unto the grave I’ll be,
Yea, I’ll in Thy love endeavor
To be living now and ever.

3 Take mine eyes for Thy possession,
Let them ever look to Thee
Even when my bleary vision
Dims with cross’s agony;
Thou, O Jesus, art my Light,
Settest every need in sight,
Thou my Sun’s illumination,
Giving bliss and jubilation.

4 Take mine ears for Thy possession,
That they may not e’er be lured
By some other false impression
But tuned only to Thy Word.
Take my mouth to be Thine own,
That it may Thy praise make known,
That it may thank-off’rings bring Thee,
And to Thy own glory sing Thee.

5 Take my hands for Thy possession,
That they may continually
Be prepared, without cessation,
For Thine own activity.
Take for Thine each move I make,
Let each step that I may take
Be but to Thy glory taken,
And Thy further praise awaken.

6 Take at last for Thy possession
All, yea, all that I may be;
Jesus, Jesus, Life, Salvation!
Take it graciously from me.
Come though cross, misfortune, pain,
Yet Thine own shall these remain:
All my reason, thoughts, and senses,
All my heart or hand commences.

GERMAN

Jesu, Jesu, du mein Leben!
Jesu, meiner Seelen Heil!
sage, was soll ich dir geben, [ach was…]
du mein auserwählter Theil?
Ich, ich will mich selbsten dir,
dir, o jesu! meine Zier,
gänzlich geben zu leibeigen;
nichts soll meinen Vorsatz beugen.

2 Ich ergebe dir mein Herze
dieses soll dein eigen sein,
auch der größte Höllenschmerze
und all andre Qual und Pein,
soll mich doch nicht kehren ab,
dein verbleib ich bis ins Grab;
ja ich will in deinem Lieben
mich ohn Ende treulich üben.

3 Dir ergeb ich meine Augen,
diese sollen für und für,
wenn sie gleich des Kreuzes Laugen
beißet dennoch sehn nach dir.
Du, o Jesu, du mein Licht,
machest, daß mir nichts gebricht:
du bist meiner Augen Sonne,
von dir hab ich Freud und wonne.

4 Dir ergeb ich meine Gehöre,
daß dasselbe fort und fort
sich nach gar nichts anders kehre,
als allein nach deinem Wort.
Dir ergeb ich meinen Mund,
daß er dein Lob mache kund,
daß er dir Dankopfer bringe,
dich mit Ehrenruhm besinge.

5 Dir ergeb ich meine Hände,
diese sollen allezeit
dein Werk ohne einig Ende
zu verrichten sein bereit.
Dir ergeb ich jeden Schritt,
jeder Schritt und jeder Tritt
soll geschehen dir zu Ehren,
und dein Ehre zu vermehren.

6 Endlich will ich dir ergeben
Alles, Alles was ich bin;
Jesu, Jesu, liebsters leben,
nimm es gnädig von mir hin.
Schlägt gleicht Kreuz und Unglück drein,
fallen doch dein eigen sein
meine Reden, meine Sinnen
mein Gedanken, mein Beginnen.

Ach Gnad über alle Gnaden

 Here is my translation of the Communion hymn, “Ach Gnad über alle Gnaden” (Anna Sophie Landgravess of Hessia-Darmstadt, d. 1672), in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #310. ” Fischer  states: “The authoress’s, Der Treue Seelenfreund Christus Jesu . . . (Jena, 1658), p. 245: ‘Contemplation hymn of the high grace which Jesus Christ shows us in His most holy Supper.’ . . . Freylinghausen has the hymn with several alterations, which are often commendable. The closing lines: ‘Du allein Herr annst mich heilen / Von der Sünden Eiterbeulen’ Bunsen 1833 alters thus: ‘Du wollst selbst Herr in mir leben, / Dir sei ganz mein Herz ergeben [Lord, live in me, let my heart be whole devoted to Thee].’” The appointed melody is “Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele.”

GRACE all other grace excelling!
Is this not the height of grace?
Round the Savior’s table swelling
Jesus bids us take our place,
Yea, invites us as His guest,
That we all, by sins oppressed,
May His sweet relief be given
And be lifted up to heaven.

2 Jesus Christ Himself will feed us
And our very food will be.
Oh, what grace from sin hath freed us,
Dearest Jesus, giv’n by Thee!
Such a thing was never heard
By man’s ear, O blessed Word,
Nor was to man’s eye presented,
Nor by human mind invented.

3 Thou wast unto death subjected
For our life and blessedness,
That we might be resurrected,
Freed from torment and distress,
Yet Thy love did Thee compel
To give us Thyself as well,
In Thy flesh to us Thou cleavest,
With Thy blood our thirst relievest.

4 Here we see Thy faithful spirit,
Thou alone the Healer art,
From whom we a draft inherit,
Granted by Thy gracious heart.
Thou art portioned to our soul,
That we may be rendered whole
From our spirit’s wounds untended,
Which had else been never mended.

5 Oh! I humbly come before Thee,
Dearest Jesus Christ, this day,
And in fervent faith implore Thee,
Since Thou didst Thy table lay:
Heav’nly grace to me afford,
That my soul may be restored,
Nor be faint in its starvation
But have Thy invigoration.

6 Lord, in order to uplift me,
Very bread of heav’n supply,
And with ample comfort gift me,
That I death and hell defy;
Let Thy fount of life so flow
That e’en I am white as snow
Quench me with the drink I cherish,
Lest for thirst I parchèd perish.

7 Lo, my heart, way-worn and sickened,
I would give Thee for relief;
Let it be with heaven quickened,
For it almost faints with grief.
Good Physician! only Thou
From my sin canst cleanse me now;
Only Thou hast pow’r to heal me
From the sores of sin that fill me.

GERMAN

Ach Gnad über alle Gnaden!
heißet das nicht Gütigkeit,
Jesus hat uns selbst geladen
zu dem Tisch, den er bereit't,
Jesus bitt't uns selbst zu Gast,
daß wir aller Sorgenlast,
aller Sünd und Noth entnommen,
in den Himmel möchten kommen,

2 Jesus, Christus, will uns speisen,
und auch selbst die Speise sein, [Köste]
Heißet das nicht Gnad erweisen,
o mein liebstes Jesulein?
Solches ist an keinen Ort,
o mein liebster Seelenhort!
sonst gehöret, noch gesehen,
solches ist sonst nie geschehen.

3 Hast du dich doch schon gegeben,
unsertwegen in den Tod,
daß wir möchten wieder leben
frei von aller Qual und Noth;
aber deiner Liebe Macht
hat dich auch dahin gebracht,
daß du deinen Leib uns schenkest
und mit deinem Blute tränkest.

4 Hier sieht man dein treu Gemüthe,
du bist sonst der Arzt allein
doch willst du aus lauter Güte
auch die Arzenei selbst sein.
Du giebst dich selbst uns zu Theil,
daß wir möchten werden heil
von den tiefen Seelenwunden,
die sonst waren unverbunden.

5 Ach! zu dir komm ich geschritten,
o mein liebster,Jesu Christ!
und will dich im Glauben bitten,
weil für mich bereitet ist
Itzo dein Genadentisch,
daß sich meine Seel erfrisch,
und vor Hunger nicht vergehe,
stets in deiner Kraft bestehe. [Wenn mir meine Kraft entstehe]

6 Ach! so wollest du mich laben
mit dem rechten Himmelbrod,
und mit reichem Trost begaben
wider Hölle, wider Tod;
ach, laß deine Lebensquell
auch mich machen weiß und hell.
Tränke mich denn, eh ich sterbe
und vor großem Durst verderbe.

7 Dir will ich anitzo schicken
mein ganz müd und mattes Herz,
Ach! das wollest du erquicken,
weil es fast vergeht vor Schmerz.
O mein Arzt! du kannst allein
mich von Sünden machen rein;
du allein kannst mich heilen
von der Sünden Eiterbeulen.
