Nun ist es Zeit zu singen hell

Here is my translation of the Christmas hymn “Nun ist es Zeit zu singen hell” (L. Helmbold,1575) from his first collaboration with Joachim Burck, Zwantzig Deutsche Liedlein . . . (1575), with the tune being composed by Burck. Friedrich Lochner picks up the final stanza for the conclusion of his Liturgie für einen Kindergottesdienst zur Feier der heiligen Weihnacht (1877ff.). In Praxis Pietatis Melica, there is a slightly different, more rhythmic form.

 

’TIS time to sing, our joy to tell
For here is born Immanuel
Of holy Mary, virgin maid,
As long ago Isai--ah said. (x2)

2 Let none this joy restrain or quell,
For here is born Immanuel;
God becomes Man of flesh like ours,
Though free from sin and all-- its pow’rs. (x2)

3 The world may crumble when it will,
For here is born Immanuel;
Ever with God we then shall live;
To Him alone all prais--es give! (x2)

Doch ohne Sünde, worden Mensch.

3 Die Welt vergeh nu, wenn sie wöll,
Geboren ist Immanuel,
Bei Gott sollen wir ewig sein:
Eja, ihm sei der Preis allein.
