Freuet euch, ihr Menschenkinder

Here is my translation of the Christmas hymn “Freuet euch, ihr Menschenkinder” (C. F. Zeller, d. 1860). This relatively late hymn is included, among other places, in Friedrich Lochner's “Liturgy for a Children's Service for the Celebration of Holy Christmas” (1877ff.), where the melody called “O Durchbrecher aller Bande” (Freylinghausen) is appointed. Otherwise, the tune "O du Liebe aller Liebe" is generally used for this one, which is by Thommen, there being several tunes proposed for that text. I include both below.

 

 

SONS of men, rejoice ye gladly,
Sing for joy, both great and small;
Sinners lost, repine not sadly!
Here’s the Savior born for all!
He who o’er the heavens reigneth,
By whose Word the worlds were made,
In the lowly manger deigneth
As an Infant to be laid.

2 Sweetly sing the hosts of heaven
While the world lies deaf in night,
Seeing not, through darkness riven,
Him, the promised heav’nly Light.
In a quiet place and lowly,
Where the world seeks naught nor hears,
Is fulfilled God’s will most holy—
As an Infant Love appears.

3 Born for you this Child is truly—
Jesus Christ, your Savior He,
Without whom we perish duly,
And the world hell’s gate must be:
O ye sons of men, then hear Him:
Here is your Immanuel!
Come ye, sinners, never fear Him,
But by faith be saved and well.

4 Jesus is the Christmas present
Sent to us by God from heav’n—
Giver He and Gift most pleasant!
Here receivers bliss are giv’n.
Therefore, children, take Him quickly,
Take Him as your Wisdom true,
Who alone saves sinners sickly,
Makes them holy, just, and new.

1. Freuet euch, ihr Menschenkinder,
freut euch beide, groß und klein!
freuet euch verlorne Sünder!
Selig, selig sollt ihr sein!
Der, dem sich Himmel neigen,
dessen Wort die Welt gebar,
stellt sich in der Weihnacht
Schweigen niedrig als ein Kindlein dar.

2. Alle Himmelsheere singen,
und die Welt, sie hörets nicht,
sieht durch das Dunkel dringen
das verheißne Himmelslicht.
In der tiefsten Armut Stille,
wo die Welt sucht und findt,
wird erfüllt des Ewgen Wille,
und die Lieb erscheint Kind.

3. Euch ist dieses Kind geboren,
Heiland Jesus Christ,
ohne den die Welt verloren,
und der Hölle Vorhof ist.
Höret es, ihr Menschenkinder:
Hier, hier ist Immanuel!
Kommet her, verzagte Sünder,
glaubt und rettet eure Seel!

4. Jesus ist die Weihnachtsgabe,
die uns Gott vom Himmel beut;
