Häupter sind verhanden

Here is my translation of Rev. David Peck’s Song 18 (from the Golden ABC, Leipzig, 1654), “Häupter sein verhanden” which is entitled by the author “Christ is the Head” based on Ephesians 5: “The Man is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, and He is the Savior of His Body.” Thanks to Mr. W. E. Cloninger for bringing it to my attention.

To the tune: Jesu wollst uns weisen (an old Italian dance song, Viver lieto voglio, by Gastoldi).

IN ALL lands are reigning
Heads by God’s ordaining—
And He (x3) in ample measure
With His grace doth crown them,
And as Heads men own them
By right, (x3) and highly treasure.
    This title princes bear
Who for their people care;
And those in office sitting
Of warfare, bear as fitting
The name (x3)
    Of Head without all shame (without all shame).
So too the husband should
Receive this title good,
And so his wife must name him,
And as her Head must claim him,
As was (x3)
By God commanded us (commanded us).

2 Yet who bears that title
So supreme and vital
Among (x3) God’s people holy?
Christ that name behooveth,
And with words approveth
As His, (x3) who Lord is solely.
    The pope, the brazen lout,
Doth thrust the true Head out,
Christ’s honor thusly thieving
And many a man deceiving
On earth, (x3)
Of high or lowly birth (or lowly birth).
He bids that he be known
As Church’s Head alone;
Great kings and princes mighty
He thinketh small and flighty,
’Tis meet, (x3)
He bids, to kiss his feet (to kiss his feet).

3. Trust not such a liar,
Holy Writ’s denier!
God’s Word (x3) forsake we never:
Christ alone remaineth
Head, as God ordaineth
Of all (x3) the Church forever.
    Though He on high hath trod
To th’ glorious throne of God
None may His office holy
Discharge, but Jesus solely.
Still He (x3)
    Head of the Church must be (the Church must be):
Not those we doctors call—
They are His servants all,
Who with all care, as fitting,
Must carry out His bidding,
For this (x3)
    In truth their duty is (their duty is).

4 He, the Lord most holy
Came a servant lowly
To earth (x3) and was ill-treated;
Yea—in humble fashion
He endured His Passion
And seemed (x3) as if defeated:
    And yet, no cause for fear!
’twas death defeated here!
The serpent’s head was broken,
Which, as the Lord had spoken,
Assayed (x3)
    That He should be unmade (should be unmade).
But lo! the fiend was dazed,
And Christ His head upraised,
Up to God’s throne ascended,
Was crowned in glory splendid—
No peer (x3)
    Has He in heaven’s sphere (in heaven’s sphere).

5 Head of ranks and orders
Over all earth’s borders,
Is He, (x3) with many_a servant,
Which bows down before Him,
And on knee adores Him
Nor faints (x3) in service fervent;
    He’s Head upon the field,
He has the vict’ry sealed;
And with His host is able
All rivals to disable:
Thou know’st (x3)
    It is the angel-host!
And with His ranks e’en now,
As laws of war allow,
Are saints on earth still faring,
Who e’er must be preparing,
The fray (x3)
    To join in th’ evil day (in th’ evil day).

6 Also in like manner,
He doth marriage honor
As Head (x3) betrothing duly:
All the church, made holy—
Head she calls Him solely,
And she (x3) His body_is truly
    Is Christ the Head, therefore,
(of which my heart is sure)
This thought shall e’er sustain me,
For naught can now restrain me
No woe (x3)
    Distress or raving foe (or raving foe)—
Yea, e’en the devil dire
However hot his ire,
I’ll not before him cower,
He shall not me o’erpower—
Christ will (x3) as Head escort me still (escort me still).

1 Häupter sein verhanden,
zwar in allen Landen,
die Gott :: selbst eingesetzet
und bedacht mit Segen
die auch von Rechtswegen
man hoch :: erkennt und schätzet:
Ein Fürst wird so genannt
das Haupt in seinem Land;
So wohl dem der Krieg führet
der Titul auch gebühret,
daß Er :: heißt Häupt und Kriegesherr?
also ein Ehemann
den Namen haben kann,
sein Weib muß ihn so nennen,
und für ihr Häupt erkennen,
wie Gott :: gegeben dies Gebot.

2 Doch wer hat die Ehre,
daß er ein Häupt wäre
und hieß :: in der Gemeine?
Christo das gebühret,
diesen Namen führet
Er selbst :: der Herr, alleine.
Der pabst, das grobe Holz,
ist zwar so frech und stolz,
daß er ihm selbst zuschreibet
die Ehr, und übertäubet
viel Leut :: auf Erden weit und breit,
der Kirchenhäupt wird er
genennt auf sein Begehr,
manch großer Fürst und König
ist gegen ihm zu wenig,
er muß :: ihm fallen gar zu Fuß.

3 Aber, ach, er leuget,
anders es bezeuget
das Wort :: dem mehr zu gläuben,
Christus sei alleine
das Häupt der Gemeine,
und werd’ :: es ewig bleiben.
Ob Er gefahren gleich
zu Gott ins Ehrenreich,
darf niemand doch mit nichten
sein Oberamt verrichten,
Er bleibt :: allein das Kirchenhäupt.
Die Lehrer es nicht sein,
Sie sein Knecht in gemein,
die da mit allem Fleiße
tun müßen sein Geheiße,
gleichwie :: es billich je und je.

4 Zwar allhier auf Erden
mußt Er ein Knecht werden,
und sich :: aus Demut schmiegen,
ja, sich lassen töten,
daß in solchen Nöten
man dacht’ :: Er würd’ erliegen:
doch hatt es keine Not,
Er überwand den Tod,
zertrat den Kopf der Schlangen,
die da sich unterfangen,
ihn gar :: zu bringen in Gefahr,
der Feind der war betäubt,
Christ hub empor sein Häupt,
fuhr auf zu Gottes Throne,
erlangt die Ehrenkrone,
ihm gleich :: ward niemand in dem Reich.

5 Er das Häupt ist worden
aller Ständ und Orden:
 Er hat :: viel Reichsgenossen,
die sich müßen biegen,
und für Ihme schmiegen,
zu Dienst :: Ihm unverdrossen:
Er ist das Haupt im Feld,
der da das Feld behält,
Er kann mit seinen Heeren
den Feinden allen wehren,
das sein :: die heilgen Engelein
sein Heere die sein auch
nach rechtem Kriegesbrauch
allhier die lieben Christen,
die sich stets müßen rüsten
zum Streit :: in aller bösen Zeit.

6 Ja nach dem Ehe-Orden
ist Er ein Häupt worden,
Er heißt :: das Häupt des Weibes,
das ist die Gemeine,
die da Ihm alleine
erkennt :: fürs Häupt des Leibes:
Ist Christus nu das Häupt,
wie mein Herz solches gläubt,
so soll mich dieses laben,
denn mir kann nichts anhaben
kein Leid :: und Widerwärtigkeit.
Ja, gar der böse Feind,
wie arg ers immer meint,
soll mir doch nicht obsiegen,
ich will nicht unterliegen,
weil Christ :: mein Häupt und Beistand ist.

O Gott, du höchstes Gnadenhort

Here is my translation of Konrad Hubert’s (d. 1577) hymn, O Gott, du höchstes Gnadenhort, to be sung before the reading of Holy Scripture, i.e., before the service. Hubert was a Reformed theologian of the equivocating Bucerian school, who is most famous for his greater contribution to hymnody in the penitent’s hymn, “Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ.” The present hymn is less ambitious and less personal in character, designed for regular use in the Sunday liturgy, such as it was; it is widely published in the hymnals of the Evangelical Church in Germany. The appointed tune is “Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend.”

O GOD, our highest Refuge Thou,
Thy gracious Word with strength endow
To penetrate our ear and heart
And holy pow’r to us impart.

2 That pow’r is the true faith we own,
That saves through Jesus Christ alone;
Love is the glow, that men may view
That we are His disciples true.

3 Then work in us, Lord, that we may
Grow by Thy Spirit day by day
To know Thee more, and finally
Find everlasting peace in Thee.

O Gott du, höchster Gnadenhort!
verleih, daß uns dein gnädig Wort
durchs Ohr allzeit zu Herzen dring,
und seine Kraft an uns vollbring.

2 Der wahre Glaube ist die Kraft,
der Heil durch Jesum Christum schafft,
die Liebe ist der helle Schein
daß wir des Herren Jünger sein.

3 Verschaffe bei uns lieber Herr!
daß wir durch deinen Geist noch mehr
in dem Erkenntniß nehmen zu
und endlich bei dir finden Ruh.

Herr Jesu Christ, ich schrei zu dir

Here is my translation of the Cross and Comfort hymn “Herr Jesu Christ, ich schrei zu dir” (Anon., 1627); according to Fischer, Kirchenlieder-Lexicon, it is based on Isaiah 26:16 and originally consists of 12 stanzas, set to the tune “Aus tiefer Not” and published in Clauder’s Cantica nova (Altenburg,1627). The additional stanza 13 and 14 were written by Jeremias Weber and first published in Leipzig, 1638. The appointed tune in most sources available to the translator is either “Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält” or “Herr Jesu Christ, du höchstes Gut.” J. S. Bach uses the latter in BWV 48. A shortened version consisting of stanzas 1, 4, 5, and 11 gained some popularity.

LORD Jesus Christ, I cry to Thee
With soul o’erwhelmed by anguish;
Make known Thy mighty pow’r to me,
Nor leave me thus to languish!
Far more are all the stings and woes
Which strike my heart with ceaseless blows,
Than I have pow’r to number.

2 Lord Jesus Christ, Thy pity lend,
Thy mercy let me borrow;
Low for my comfort kindly bend,
To save me from this sorrow
In which my mind lies as one dead;
For if Thou help not, hope is fled—
It can no balm discover.

3 Lord Jesus Christ, great is the need
In which I now am lying.
Sleep not, dear God, but come with speed,
Arise, and hear my sighing!
For there is none to help or mend,
No creature can my cause defend
To none can I lament it.

4 Lord Jesus Christ, my Life Thou art
My hope’s foundation solely;
Into Thy hands with all my heart
I will commend me wholly.
O Lord, let not my hope in Thee
By anything confounded be,
Or I am most forsaken.

5 Lord Jesus Christ, God’s very Son,
In Thee my trust abideth;
Thou art the Mercy-seat alone,
Whoe’er in Thee confideth,
Thou art with him in ev’ry need,
In life and death his help and aid;
Here is my heart well-grounded.

6 Lord Jesus Christ, a gracious eye
Turn to Thy poor creation;
For Thy five wounds do not deny
My pray’r and supplication,
Which day and night in misery
My wretched heart pours out to Thee.
Oh, let it stir Thy pity!

7 Lord Jesus Christ, when comes the hour
That Thy will may decree me,
Then in Thy mercy by Thy pow’r
From all afflictions free me.
My enemies assaults destroy,
Who are for me too strong and sly;
Nor suffer them to crush me.

8 Lord Jesus Christ, I now commend
My brethren to Thy favor;
In soul and body them attend
And keep them safe ever:
Protect them by Thy mercy great,
And turn to joy my sorrow’s weight
Which I lament before Thee.

9 Lord Jesus Christ, I know no way
To break my grief asunder,
Unless in grace Thou help convey,
While here on earth I wander;
Therefore if it shall please Thee best
With torments still to strike my breast,
Then with Thy strength uphold me!

10 Lord Jesus Christ, give patience bold,
Help me my cross to carry:
Do not Thy gracious love withhold,
And if Thou wilt not spare me,
Then plague my flesh with temp’ral woes,
But give my wretched soul repose,
To dwell with Thee hereafter.

11 Lord Jesus Christ, this I believe
With all my heart and reason;
Thou wilt my faithful cry receive
When comes the fitting season;
For Thou hast ne’er forsaken me
Whenever I have called to Thee;
This comforts me most truly.

12 Lord Jesus Christ, sole comfort Thou,
To Thee myself commending,
I know Thou know’st my suff’ring now,
And Thou wilt bring its ending;
Then to Thy will I am resigned
Dear God, do what is in Thy mind;
I’m Thine, yea, Thine forever.

13 Lord Jesus Christ, bedew my sighs
Which I pour out so often,
With Thy dear blood, to pierce the skies
The Father’s heart to soften;
So may Thy blood His favor gain,
And He withdraw all grief and pain
Which threaten to divide us.

14 Lord Jesus Christ, Thy help supply
To ev’ry soul afflicted;
Seek all who now anguish lie,
By cords of grief restricted;
Relieve them with a mighty hand,
That here and in the Fatherland
They ever may adore Thee.

GERMAN

Herr Jesu Christ, ich schrei zu dir,
aus hochbetrübter Seele:
dein Allmacht laß erscheinen mir
und mich nicht also quäle;
viel grösser ist die Angst und Schmerz,
so anficht und turbiert mein Herz,
als daß ichs kann erzählen.

2 Herr Jesu Christ, erbarm dich mein
durch deine große Güte:
mit Trost und Rettung jetzt erschein
meim traurigen Gemüte,
welchs elendiglich wird geplagt,
und so du nicht hilfst, gar verzagt,
weils keinen Trost kann finden.

3 Herr Jesu Christ, groß ist die Not,
darin ich jetzt tu stecken:
Ach hilf, mein allerliebster Gott,
schlaf nicht, laß dich erwecken,
niemand ist, der mir helfen kann
kein Kreatur sich mein nimmt an:
ich darfs auch niemand klagen.

4 Herr Jesu Christ, du bist allein
mein Hoffnung und mein Leben:
drum will ich in die Hände dein
mich ganz und gar ergeben:
O Herr, laß meine Zuversicht,
auf dich, zu Schanden werden nicht,
sonst bin ich ganz verlassen.

5 Herr Jesu Christe, Gottes Sohn
zu dir steht mein Vertrauen:
du bist der rechte Gnadentron,
wer nur auf dich tut bauen,
dem stehst du bei in aller Not,
hilfst ihm im Leben und im Tod;

9 Herr Jesu Christ, verleih Geduld,
hilf mir mein Kreuz ertragen:
Wend nicht von mir ab deine Huld,
und so du mich willst plagen,
es zeitlich hie am Leibe tu,
gib nur der armen Seelen Ruh,
daß sie dort mit dir lebe.

10 Herr Jesu Christ, das glaub ich doch
aus meines Herzen Grunde:
du wirst mich wohl erhören noch,
zu rechter Zeit und Stunde:
denn du hast mich noch nie verlan,
wenn ich dich hab geruffen an,
des ich mich herzlich tröste.

11 Herr Jesu Christ, einiger Trost,
zu dir will ich mich wenden:
mein Herzleid ist dir wohl bewußt,
du kannst und wirst es enden;
in deinen Willn sei es gestellt,
machs, lieber Gott, wie dirs gefällt,
dein bin und will ich bleiben.

12 Herr Jesu Christ, die Seufzer mein,
so ich vor dir tu bringen,
besprenge mit dem Blute dein,
damit sie hindurch dringen,
und erweichen das Vaterherz,
daß er abwend all Angst und Schmerz,
die mich von dir will trennen.

13 Herr Jesu Christ, mit Hilf erschein
allen, allen Elenden,
die jetzt in großen Ängsten sein,
tu dich zu ihnen wenden,
mit starker Hand heraus sie reis,
davor sie dir dort Lob und Preis
ewiglich sagen werden.
