Ach, kommt ihr Menschenkinder all

Here is my translation of the Missions / Preaching Office hymn “Ach, kommt ihr Menschenkinder all” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #78 for the Second Sunday after Trinity (Gospel: Luke 14:16–24) with melody assignment: “Du unbegreiflich höchstes Gut.” The English adpatation in The Church Hymn Book, included below, is (surprisingly) in 8 stanzas of Common Meter, even though Henkel often adapted his works in Long Meter, in which the original was written here. In its eight stanzas, some of the original ideas are omitted, others altered or refined.

OH, come, ye children of mankind,
Come to the feast for you designed;
The Lord, your life and and Savior true,
Himself prepared this feast for you.

2 The Lord Himself from heaven came,
Our mis’ry took in humble frame,
Died on the cross and bore our rod,
And reconciled us all with God.

3 To us He sent His servants out;
That none may His salvation doubt:
But all men, poor, rich, young, and old,
Might come where’er this news is told.

4 Oh, come, ye weary, one and all!
Praise God, we in our heav’nly call
May boldly bear the Lord’s behest.
Oh, come, ye surely shall find rest!

5 If daily ye your sins lament,
And ye find else no help is lent,
Come, taste God’s grace and clemency,
Which from transgression sets you free.

6 We are not worthy guests, we own,
God gives us heav’n by grace alone.
Because our Savior Christ for us
Was sacrificed upon the cross.

7 Therefore do not yourself excuse,
As many a man among us does,
Who rather flesh and world respects
And God’s auspicious grace neglects.

8 These worldly riches, fame, and ease,
As much as they the flesh appease,
Bring no true joy into the heart,
But heartache in the end impart.

9 In Jesus’ name we venture forth
And to His house invite the earth:
O come, O come, ye lame and blind,
And ye will soon your healing find!

10 Oh, yes, there is yet room and place,
Oh, follow but the train of grace,
The Lord bids every sinner come
To fill His house of Christendom.

11 Oh, yet, alas! Do not delay,
Or meet what here the Lord doth say,
Of every once-invited guest,
None shall of this My banquet taste

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
Ye sons of men, come one and all!
Come to the Gospel feast;
Obey your blessed Savior’s call:
O come and be His guest!

2 We bear his message unto you,
Commissioned by the Lord—
His promises, come prove them true,
And trust unto His Word.

3 All things for you are ready now,
And precious is the treat!
And all you need He will bestow,
To make your joys complete.

4 We pray that you may all draw near,
And to the call attend;
They who refuse our call to hear,
Cannot be Jesus’ friend.

5 Nothing pertaining to this life,
Should cause you to delay—
Not land or oxen, or a wife,
Keep you from Christ away.

6 Be ye not like the stubborn Jews,
Who all his calls disdained!
Because they did his grace refuse!
His curse on them remained.

7 He calleth not the Jews alone,
But all who will receive;
Come poor and needy, every one
Come ye to him and live.

8 But come ye, now make no delay!
O come with speed and haste:
Lest He should in displeasure say—
My feast ye shall not taste.

GERMAN
Ach, kommt ihr Menschen-Kinder all,
kommt zu dem großen Abendmahl;
der Herr, der hat für euch bereit,
das Leben und die Seligkeit.

2 Der Herr vom Himmel selber kam,
und unser Elend sich annahm,
er starb für uns den Kreuzes-Tod,
versöhnte uns auch all mit Gott.

3 Hat uns die Knechte ausgesandt,
wir machen euch das Heil bekannt:
ihr Arme, Reiche, Jung und Alt,
die ihrs jetzt höret kommt doch bald.

4 Kommt ihr Beladne allesammt,
Gott lob, daß wir in unserm Amt
getrost euch darfen rufen zu,
ach, kommt gewiß, ihr findet Ruh.

5 Klagt euch die Sünde täglich an,
ist niemand der euch helfen kann:
kommt schmeckt was Gottes Gnade sei,
die euch macht von den Sünden frei.

6 WIr sind den Himmel zwar nicht werth;
doch wird er uns aus Gnad beschert:
weil unser Heiland Jesus Christ

bringt keinem Herzen wahre Freud,
nur schafts am Ende Herzeleid.

9 Wir gehn im Namen Jesu aus,
und laden alle in sein Haus:
ihr Lahme, Blinde, kommt herein,
so wird euch bald geholfen sein.

10 Ach ja, es ist noch Raum genug,
ach folget nur dem Gnaden-Zug,
der Herr ruft alle Sünder bei,
damit sein Haus gefüllet sei.

11 Doch aber ach! versäumert nicht,
sonst trifft euch, was der Herr dort spricht:
von den geladnen Gästen all,
schmeckt keiner dies mein Abendmahl.

Gib uns heut unser täglich Brot

Here is my translation of the Laetare hymn, “Gib uns heut unser täglich Brot” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #40 for the Gospel of John 6:1–15, with melody assignment “Du unbegreiflich höchstes Gut” (very common in this hymnal). The English adaptation in the Church Hymn Book, “Grant us, Dear Lord, Our Daily Bread,” included below, numbers only 7 rather than 9 stanzas, and varies somewhat from the text, though naturally retaining the Long Meter. It preserves stanzas 1–2, 5, and ideas from the last three, somewhat rearranged, and adds a new idea in English stanza 4. My own version includes alternate renderings of the translated stanzas.

GIVE us this day our daily bread—
So let us pray to Christ our Head,
And call on Him in every need,
Who always can His people feed.

2 Though naught be found in our supply,
When thousands in their hunger cry,
Yet Jesus always knows the cure,
And brings us help with action sure.

3 Whoever doth His wonders see,
And trusts His Word most heartily
In Jesus findeth no deceit,
He findeth daily bread replete.

4 ’Tis He who doth the world sustain,
And “daily more” is His refrain;
He sees each day that sust’nance can
Be had on earth by every man.

5 There lifting up His eyes, He saw
With pity crowds around Him draw,
Which moved Him to compassion more,
Since they were faint and hungered sore.

6 He bade them camp upon the grass,
Oh, what a good command that was!
With bread and fish of small prospect
For thousands He the table decked.

7 They ate and satisfied were all
And glorified His miracle:
If He will give prosperity,
We’ll be content continually!

8 Thus many are to Christ inclined,
So long as days of ease they find.
But, when distress and woe betide,
No longer will with Him abide.

9 My dearest Jesus, help Thou me,
That I in faith may follow Thee,
And in all cross and grief may stay
Thy true and faithful foll’wer aye.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK

1 (1) Grant us, dear Lord, our daily bread,
Thus do we pray in time of need;
To him our precious lord we cry,
Who daily doth our wants supply.

2 (2) Where nothing laid in store we see,
Where thousands faint and hungry be;
Yet may we trust and firmly b'lieve,
He find's a way for us to live.

3 (5) When Jesus in the wilderness
Beheld, his follow'rs in distress,
Fatigued and hungry, weak and faint,
He pitied them to see their want.

4 (new) And how to help them He well knew,
Although he asked, What shall we do?
Our faith must always first be tried,
Before our wants are all supplied.

5 (6a) He then commands them to prepare,
And trust his providence and care;
Without a table being set,
The feast for them was soon complete.

6 (7b?) When Jesus grants us His increase,
Then we partake the greater bliss;
(6b) Two little fish, five loaves of bread,
Some thousands of his follow'rs fed.

7 (8–9v) If here we follow Christ indeed,
He will support us as we need;
And when this present life is past
We feast with him in heav’n at last.

GERMAN
Gieb uns heut unser täglich Brod,
so beten wir in aller Noth,
wir rufen unsern Heiland an,
der allezeit uns speisen kann.

2 Und ob man nichts zum Vorrath findt,
da doch viel tausend hungrig sind,
so weiß doch Jesus immer Rath,
und hilft uns allen in der That.

3 Wer nur auf seine Wunder schaut,
und seinem Wort von Herzen traut,
der findt in Jesu kein Betrug,
er findt das täglich Brod genug.

4 Er ists ja der die Welt ernährt,
und doch noch täglich mehr bescher,
er sorget so daß jedermann
die täglich Nahrung haben kann.

5 Dort sah er mit Erbarmen an,
als er die Augen aufgethan;
es jammert ihn das Volk zu sehn,
verschmacht und hungirg um ihn stehn.

6 Er hieß sie lagern auf das Gras,
o welch ein gut Gebot war das!
mit wenig Brod und wenig Fisch,
und deckt für tausenden den Tisch.

7 Sie aßen all und wurden satt
und preisten seine Wunderthat;
giebt er es, so daß uns gedeiht,
so ists genug zu jederzeit.

8 Es folget Jesu manscher nach,
so lang er findet gute Tag;
bricht aber Noth und Trübsal ein,
so will er nicht mehr bei ihm sein.

9 Dazu mein Jesu hilf du mir,
daß ich im Glauben folge dir,
daß ich in allem Kreuz und Leid
dir treu verbleib in Ewigkeit.
