Das ist mir lieb, daß Gott, mein Hort

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Das ist mir lieb, daß Gott, mein Hort” (P. Gerhardt, 17th c.), which is given in the author’s Geistreiche Andachten for Trinity XVI, a paraphrase of Psalm 116 following Luther’s rendering, to be sung to either “Ein feste Burg” (the same meter and tune on which Cyriacus Spangenberg had based his paraphrase of the same psalm 116, “Es ist mir lieb daß Gott der Herr” in 1582, over eighty years earlier) or a proper melody composed for the text by Ebeling. Originally translated in 2008 for the Gerhardt Project but never published, it is given here in a slightly revised form.

Mel.: Ein Feste Burg (isorhythmic);
Or: Das ist mir lieb, daß Gott, mein Hort.

TIS dear to me that God my Lord
So faithfully defends me;
When Him I pray, my every word
He hears, and well attends me.
Death’s hand so dark and fell,
With the bands of hell
Encompassed all about
My heart with pain and doubt;
But God brought help and saved me.

2 I fell in sorrow, grief, and dread
And soon was overtaken,
But as I sank I called and pled
To God with faith unshaken:
“O Lord, I know Thou art
Ruler of my heart
So hasten to my aid!”
And even as I prayed
It likewise was accomplished.

3 Rejoice again with happy mood,
My soul, and be glad-hearted,
The Lord works all things for thy good,
And that is departed
And taken far away,
Which gives me dismay;
For from hell’s fiery breath
And heavy yoke of death
He with His hand hath plucked me.

4 Mine eye is freed from every tear,
My foot from all frustrations;
I will proclaim it without fear
And shout it to the nations.
What none on earth could do
God hath carried through.
All men are full of lies,
But God is surely wise
And keeps His word forever.

5 My mind believes, nor is deterred,
My heart this trust maintaineth,
My mouth declares its simple word:
"Who trusts in God remaineth."
The world and wicked flock
Laugh, deride and mock,
Yea, strike me to the breast
But I shall stand and rest
In Thee, my God and Helper.

6 Thou break’st the schemes of Satan's horde
Their harsh rebukes redressing,
How shall I e’er repay Thee, Lord
For all Thy gracious blessing?
I’ll take Thy saving cup
My portion, Lord, to sup,
Which, full of bitterness,
Is given yet to bless,
Thy Word, Lord, thus obeying.

7 Whate’er Thou hast apportioned me
That will I gladly suffer;
To him who bears griefs willingly
Thou dost deliv’rance offer.
Thou know’st Thy people’s woes
And their deathly throes
Are grave and dear to Thee,
No drop of blood shall be
On earth left unavengèd.

8 Though all the world should me resent,
O Lord, who am Thy servant:
Thou shelt’rest me within Thy tent,
Imparting justice fervent.
For which I will to Thee

Ever piously
(As much as e’er I can),
Before the throngs of man
Within Thy house sing praises!

GERMAN

Das ist mir lieb, daß Gott, mein Hort,
So treulich bei mir stehet;
Wenn ich ihn bitte, wird kein Wort
In meiner Bitt verschmähet.
Des schwarzen Todes Hand
Samt der Höllen Band
umgaben überall
Mein Herz mit Angst und Qual;
Doch hat mir Gott geholfen.

2 Ich kam in Jammer und in Not
Und sank fast gar zugrunde,
Und da sank, rief ich zu Gott
Mit Herzen und mit Munde:
O Herr, ich weiß, du wirst
Als des Lebens Fürst
Schon führen meine Sach!
Und wie ich bat und sprach,
So ists auch nun geschenket.

 3 Sei wieder froh und gutes Muths.
Mein Herze, sei zufrieden,
Der Herr, der thut dir alles Guts,
durch ihn ist nun geschieden
Und ferne weg gebracht,
Was mich traurig macht;
Er hat mich aus dem Loch
Und schweren Todesjoch
Mit seiner Hand gerissen.

4 Mein Aug ist nun von Thränen frei,
Mein Fuß von seinem Gleiten;
Das will ich sagen ohne Scheu
Und rühmen bei den Leuten.
Was gar kein Mensch nicht kann,
Das hat Gott gethan.
Der Mensch ist Lügen voll,
Gott aber weiß gar wohl,
Wie sein Wort soll halten.

5 Ich glaube fest in meinem Sinn,
Und was mein Herze glaubet,
Das red ich auch in Einfalt hin:
Wer Gott vertraut, der bleibet.
Die Welt und böse Rott
Lacht des, mir zum Spott,
Ja plagt mich noch dazu;
Ich aber steh und ruh
Auf dir, mein Gott und Helfer.

6 Du stürzest meiner Feinde Rath
Und segnest, wenn sie schelten,
Die soll ich doch die große Gnad
Dir immermehr vergelten?
Ich will, Herr, meines Theils
Den Kelch deines Heils,
Der voller Bitterkeit,
Doch mir zu Nutz gedeiht,
Gehorsamlich annehmen.

7 Was du mir zugemessen hast,
Das will ich gerne leiden;
Wer fröhlich trägt des Kreuzes Last,
Dem hilft du aus mit Freuden.
Du weißt der deinen Noth,
Und hältest ihren Tod
Sehr hoch, sehr lieb und werth,
Auch läßt du auf der Erd
Ihr Blut nicht ungerochen.

8 So zürne nun gleich alle Welt
Mit mir, Herr, deinen Knechte:
Du, du deckst mich in deinem Zelt
Und reichst mir deine Rechte.
Darüber will ich dich
All stets inniglich,
So gut ich immer kann
Mit Dank vor jedermann
In deinem Hause preisen.
