Komm, Herre Gott, die Sach ist dein

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Komm, Herre Gott, die Sach ist dein” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm XCIV, Deus ultionum, with title “A supplication for the Christian church against the oppression and arrogance of the enemy.” The Phrygian melody by Waldis follows the meter 847.847.8477 (AABCCBDDEE).

O COME, Lord God, Thy cause defend,
The right attend,
And rise up to avenge Thee!
Is vengeance thine, Thyself then show,
Just doom bestow
On those whose lives offend thee!
O Lord, how long shall godless men
Arise again,
And triumph, boast, and vaunt them?
Lord, take revenge upon them!

2 Behold how boastfully they walk,
And proudly talk
Of glory and great honor
Their tyranny and wicked deed
All bounds exceed,
They break Thy folk asunder,
Afflict Thy heritage and slay
Thy flock all day,
The widow poor distressing,
The orphan too oppressing!

3 They say: The Lord will let it be
And will not see,
The Lord will not attend it!
Be wise, ye fools, as well ye should,
For your own good,
Bethink your way— amend it!
Shall God, who giveth thee the ear
Not also hear,
Shall God, the eye who giveth
Not see how mankind liveth?

4 Indeed, shall He that doth chastise
The heathen lies,
Not also thus berate us?
Shall He who makes men wisdom learn,
And makes them turn,
Who did at first create us,
Who doth all people’s hearts survey,
Observes their way,
And knows their thoughts most fully,
That they are futile wholly?

5 Blest is the man who sees Thy light,
And turns aright
Through Thy true Word and teaching.
All troubles he will suffer e’er
And sorrow bear,
In faith God’s comfort reaching,
Until Thou mak’st th’ ungodly all
At last to fall
And fill with lamentation
The pit of condmnation.

6 For God the Lord His own doth save
From death and grave,
His people casts off never
All godly hearts shall joy that they
Are saved that Day,
And shall not be rejected.
For justice, as God doth ordain,
Shall just remain,
However men may slight it
Or arrogantly fight it!

7 For wicked men who boasting wield
I have no shield,
No man will stand beside me;
When they unleash iniquity
And treachery,
No man can help provide me.
Unless God helped me in that day,
And were my stay,
My soul must have been ceasing,
No comfort more possessing.

8 My foot nigh slipped, O Lord, when I
Perceived the cry
Of boastful men surrounding;
Anxiety o’ertook my heart,
Nor would depart,
Until Thy trump was sounding;
Yet by Thy grace I was well armed,
And thus unharmed;
My foes no more affright me,
Thy comforts all delight me!

9 I know their fraud, their teaching false
Thy heart appalls
And stirs Thine indignation;
With lies they seek men’s souls to hurt,
Thy Word pervert,
With false interpretation,
The righteous brazenly condemn
And banish them,
And in their greed so shameless
Make martyrs of the blameless.

10 But Thou, Lord, art my strong defense
And confidence
Against those who deny Thee.
Their own iniquity shall fall
And strike them all
Who fight and still defy Thee.
In vengeance Thou shalt blot them out,
Their forces rout,
And to the end pursue them—
Yea, Lord our God, undo them!

¶ So may we here on earth acclaim
Thy holy name,
And with our heart adore Thee,
And with great jubilation sing,
And sound the string
To magnify Thy glory;
Because Thou dost in trouble save
From sin and grave,
Through Christ, Thy Son, our Savior
From heaven’s throne of favor.

Wöllst du in HERR bezalen.

2 Sih, wie trutzlich sie einher farn,
Alls reden tharn
Mit rhum und grossen ehren:
Ir Tyrannei und ubelthat
Keyn maß nit hat,
Dein volck sie gar verheren,
Plagen dein Erb in grosser not,
Und schlagen todt,
Witwen, weysen betrüben,
Irn mutwilln an in üben.

3 Sie sprechen: Gott leßts alls geschehen,
Und wirts nicht sehn,
Der HERR wil solchs nicht achten:
Ach merckt ir Narrn, und werdet klug,
Zu ewrem fug,
Und wöllts doch baß betrachten,
Gott, der dne augen gibt das gsicht,
Und helles liecht,
Und pflantzt der menschen ohren,
Solt der wedr sehn noch hören?

4 Ja, der die heyden richtet hin,
Nach seinem sinn,
Sol der auch jetzt nicht straffen?:
Der die menschen die weißheyt lert,
Zu sich bekert,
Und alles hat erschaffen,
Der aller menschen hertzen sicht,
Und was geschicht,
Und weyß all ir gedancken,
Daß sie seind eitel wancken.

5 Wol dem den du Herr Gott hie lerst,
Und recht bekerst,
Durch dein wort und gesetze:
Daß Er im unfal hab gedult,
Und leid on schuldt,
Seins glaubens sich ergetze,
Biß das du die Gottlosen all,
Mit grossem schall,
Und die verwegen buben
Hinab stürtzst in die gruben.

6 Dann Gott der Herr hilfft seinem Erb,
Daß nicht verderb,
Wirt sein volck nicht verstossen:
Des frewt sich dann manch frummes hertz,
Kert sich herwertz,
Sie solln nicht werdn verlassen.
Dann das Recht muß doch bleiben Recht,
Das ist schon schlecht,
Hilfft nicht daß mans vernichtet,
Trutzlich dawider fichtet.

7 Gegen der boßhafftigen trutz
Hab ich keynn schutz,
Niemand zu mir wil tretten:
Wann mich anficht ir ubelthat,
Ir untrew rath,
So kan mich niemand retten,
Wo mir der HERR nicht hülffe thet,
Und bei mich tret,
So must mein seel verschwinden,
Gantz trostloß stünd dahinden.

8 Mein fuß bei nah gestrauchelt het,
So bang mir thet
Der ubelthäter bochen:
Bekümmerniß mein hertz bezwang,
Und wert zu lang,
Wanns nit solt werden grochen.
Abr doch erhielt mich deine gnad,
Daß mirs nicht schad,
Dein tröstung mich ergetzen,
Mein hertz zu friden setzen.

9 Ich weyß du billichst nimmermehr
Ir falschen leer,
Ir schedlich, schendtlich wesen:
Da mann der seel verderben lehrt,
Dein wort verkert,
Felschlich deuten und lesen,
Da mans den frommen unverschampt,
Verbannt, verdampt,
Umb eygen nutz und gniessen,
Unschuldig blut vergiessen.

10 Abr, du Herr, bist mein hort und schutz,
Widr allen trutz,
Mein zuversicht, mein leben:
Ir unrecht in vergelten solt,
Ir sünd und schuld
Der, die dir widerstreben.
Ir boßheyt gar vertilget werd
Allhie auff erd,
In alln zur rach und straffen,
Das wirstu HERR verschaffen.

¶ So wöllen wir allhie auff erdt
Deinn Namen werdt
Preisen, und dein lob singen:
Und machen uns der freuden vil,
Auff seyten spil,
Die harpffen lassen klingen,
Weil du uns hilffst in aller not,
Auß sünd und todt,
Durch Christum deinen Sone,
Auß deinem höchsten throne.

Herr Gott, dem alle Rach heimfällt

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Herr Gott, dem alle Rach heimfällt” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm XCIV, Deus ultionum, with title “Against the harmful throne” and melody assignment “Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält.” Luther writes of the psalm itself,

It is a psalm of supplication lamenting (in my understanding) not the heathen so much as kings, princes, priests, and prophets, calling them the brutish of the people (v. 8), that is, those who taught and governed the people foolishly and badly. These are they who killed and persecuted all upright prophets and their pupils, and as he says, presumed upon God who had given them authority, as though He did not see nor regard those who were slain by them, as condemned heretics and seditious men against rulers of both [church and state]. He prays against them, comforting himself in his faith and the knowledge that his word and cause are just, and God will take no pleasure in the harmful throne [KJV “throne of iniquity” ; YLT “throne of mischief”], but will recompense them for their lies and murder. Amen.

LORD God, all vengeance lies with Thee,
Therefore be our defender,
Thou Judge of earth, rise speedily
And to the proud men render
Rewards befitting their misdeed,
How long shall this ungodly breed
Still boast and hold their triumph?

2 Thy speak defiantly and boast,
Their evil works depicting,
And break in pieces, Lord, Thy host,
Thine heritage afflicting.
They make all things their spoil and prey,
The widow and the stranger slay,
The fatherless they murder.

3 And yet they say that they are right,
The Most High shall not see it.
Their sin is far too small and slight,
God will not care! Far be it!—
Attend, ye brutish, one and all,
Ye fools, when will ye wisdom’s call
Obey, and be made wiser?

4 Shall He that planted first the ear
Not hear what ye are saying?
Shall He that formed the eye
Not see your deeds betraying?
He who the heathen doth chastise
And teacheth all men knowledge wise,
Shall He not give correction?

5 The Lord knows that man’s thought at best
Is vanity completely.
Blest is the man Thou chastenest,
And teachest Thy law meetly.
In adverse days he shall forbear
Until a pit Thou shalt prepare
To bring the wicked ruin.

6 The Lord is faithful, He will not
Cast off His people ever;
His heritage, His chosen lot
Shall He abandon never.
For just His judgment shall remain,
And all the upright to His reign
Shall gather, and shall follow.

7 Who will rise up and stand for me,
The evildoers smiting,
Who always works iniquity?
Who will for me be fighting?
Unless the Lord in my distress
Had been my help, with heaviness
My soul to hell had fallen.

8 O Lord, I freely must admit,
My foot had slipped most surely,
Had not Thy grace supported it
And held me up securely.
When many thoughts oppress my heart
Thy comforts to my soul impart
Delight and sweetest pleasure.

9 The throne of foul iniquity
No fellow in Thee getteth,
Which frames Thy Law most wickedly,
And church and school upsetteth,
Condemns the blood of innocents,
And arms itself with violence,
The righteous souls opposing.

10 The Lord is my defense and stay,
While foes their bows are stringing;
He shall their proud conceit repay
Their sins upon them bringing,
And cut off all their villainy,
False doctrine, and iniquity—
Yea, cut them off completely!

GERMAN
HErr Gott dem alle Rach heimfällt,
Gott des die Rach erſcheine,
Erheb dich Richter aller Welt,
Wieder die ſtolzen Feinde,
Vergilt ihnen, was ſie verdient,
Wie lang ſol diß gottloß Geſind,
Wie lang ſolln ſie doch pralen?

2  Sie reden trotzig, rühmen ſich,
Daß ſie alles verderben,
Zuſchlagen dein Volck jämmerlich
Und plagen, HErr, dein Erbe.
Witwen und Frembdling würgen ſie,
Tödten die Wayſen ſpat und frü,
Und machen alls zum Raube.

3  Noch ſprechen ſie, ſie habens recht,
Der Höchſte ſolls nicht ſehen,
Die Sünde ſei gering und ſchlecht,
Gott laß es leicht geſchehen.
Mercket ihr Narren all zuhauff,

All fromme Hertzen werden ſchlecht
Demſelben auch zufallen.

7  Wer ſteht bey mir auf meiner Seit
Wieder die Übelthäter,
Die Boßheit üben allezeit?
Wer wil bey mir umbtreten?
Wo nicht der HErr mein Hülfe wer,
So hätt mein Seele mit Beſchwer
Vorlängſt zur Hell müßt fahren.

8  Ich muß, HErr, ja bekennen frey,
Mein Fuß geſtrauchelt hätte,
Wo mir nicht wer geſtanden bey
Dein Gnad, und mich errettet.
Mein Hertz hat viel Bekümmernüß,
Die Tröſtungn dein feſt und gewiß
Ergötzen meine Seele.

9  Du ſtehſt nimmer in Einigkeit
Mit dem ſchädlichen Stule,
Der dein Geſetz HErr übel deut,
Verwirrt Kirchen und Schulen,
Verdammet das unſchüldig Blut,
Und rüſtet ſich mit Freveln Mut
Wider gerechte Seelen.

10  Der HErr iſt mein GOtt, Hort und Schutz
Allzeit meine Zuverſichte,
Er wird der Böſen Stoltz und Trutz
Vergelten durch ſein Grichte,
Er wird vertilgen gantz und gar
Ihr Boßheit und die falſche Lahr,
Ja GOtt wird ſie vertilgen.
