Kommt, ihr Blinden, kommt am Wege

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Kommt, ihr Blinden, kommt am Wege” (L. Laurentii, 1700), from the author’s Evangelia Melodica, the second hymn for Estomihi (Quinquagesima).

Mel.: Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele (Wie nach einem/r Wasserquelle).

COME, ye blind men, idly sitting,
For your Jesus passeth by!
Come, the paths of error quitting,
Let Him heal the blinded eye.
Cry: Lord, let Thy mercy be
On all people, and on me!
Then will Jesus Christ receive you,
And in pity soon relieve you.

2 None partakes of Jesus’ Passion
Who goes not to Him in faith,
Nor forsakes sin’s devastation,
Which for wages offers death.
Think not in thy wicked way
Sin cannot cause thee dismay!
Nay, thou bringest death upon thee,
Though thy Savior heaven won thee.

3 Sons of hell, think not the Passion
Doth to you as well pertain,
While ye yet as sinners brazen
In th’ estate of sin remain.
Jesus sinners doth receive—
Yea, but those who sin will leave,
And with sorrow seek His healing,
With a contrite heart appealing.

4 Let no man in sin yet living
Cherish any comfort vain
That the Lord will help be giving
And for sin his cure obtain.
Wilt thou be from trouble free?
From sin’s foulness wholly flee!
For thus debts find their forgiving,
And thou canst by faith be living.

5 Jesus, let Thy Passion ever
Work within us mightily,
That no sin from Thee may sever,
Nor we fail God’s face to see!
Give the Holy Spirit’s pow’r,
Heart and soul to purge and scour,
Healing for our wounds supplying,
By Thy Passion, blood, and dying.

6 Grant all souls in tribulation
Fleeing worldly wickedness
In Thy wounds all restoration,
Life, and perfect righteousness.
Make the blinded spirit see,
And contritely come to Thee,
That we may in grateful fashion
Glorify Thee for Thy Passion.

Kommt, ihr Blinden, kommt am Wege,
Jesus will vorübergehn!
Kommt, verlaßt die Lasterstege,
Daß ihr wieder möget sehn.
Rufet: Herr, erbarme dich
Über alle Welt und mich!
So wird Jesus euch umarmen
Und sich eurer Noth erbarmen.

2 Niemand findt an Jesu Leiden
Theil, wer nicht zu ihm geht hin
Und die Sünde will vermeiden,
Die den Tod hat zum Gewinn.
Denke nicht bei Frevelthat,
Daß die Sünde dir nicht schadt.
Nein, du hast den Tod verdienet,
Ob dich Jesus gleich versühnet.

3 Meinet nicht, ihr Höllenkinder,
Daß dies Leiden euch angeht,
So lang ihr als freche Sünder
In dem Sündenstande steht.
Zwar nimmt er die Sünder an,
Aber die vom Lasterbahn
Fliehen und ihr Heil mit Schmerzen
Suchen mit zerknirschtem Herzen.

4 Niemand tröste sich vergebens
Bei dem Sündendienst und Greul,
Daß ihm hilft der Fürst des Lebens
Und daß er von Sünden heil.
Willt du frei sein von der Noth,
So verlaß den Sündenkoth.
Denn so ist die Schuld vergeben
Und kannst deines Glaubens leben.

5 Ach, Herr Jesu, laß dein Leiden
Einmal in die Kraft ergehn,
Daß uns nicht die Sünden scheiden,
Gottes Angesicht zu sehn!
Gib des Heilgen Geistes Kraft,
Daß in uns werd abgeschafft
Alles, was uns kann verderben,
Durch dein Leiden, Blut und Sterben.

6 Schenke den betrübten Seelen
Leben und Gerechtigkeit,
Die in deine Wundenhöhlen
Fliehen zu der bösen Zeit.
Mache sehend, was noch blind
Und mit Reu sich zu dir findt,
Daß wir dankbar deinen Namen
Für dein Leiden preisen, Amen.

Jesum Christum, der Welt Heiland

Here is my translation of the hymn “Jesum Christum, der Welt Heiland” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for the feast of St. Matthew, a paraphrase of the Gospel from Matthew 9 with a closing supplication. Gesius 1605 indicates the melody “Erhalt uns,” etc.

Mel.: Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort.

CHRIST Jesus, Savior of all man,
The Father by His gracious plan
Sent to bring back the sheep astray
And to be their dear Lord for aye.

2 When Matthew sitting He did see
At work, He saith: Come, follow Me.
At once he from his work arose,
And followed where his Master chose.

3 He went with Jesus to his home,
And many publicans did come,
And sinners too from everywhere,
For they had heard that Christ was there.

4 Of Him they many things had heard;
There did He preach to them God’s Word,
Receiving them soft-heartedly,
And showed them tender charity.

5 With them at table too He sat,
And without fear spoke, drank, and ate,
The Pharisees looked on with pain,
And asked His foll’wers to explain.

6 Your Master much offendeth us,
Such publicans and sinners thus
To welcome in. It is not meet
That He with such should drink and eat.

7 When Jesus heard, to them He said:
The healthy no physician need,
But ’tis the weary, sick, and weak,
That eagerly the doctor seek.

8 But ye, in your hypocrisy,
Dream that ye need no remedy,
But that by off’rings all is done.
Therefore ye heed Me not a one.

9 Hosea saith far differently:
’Tis mercy that well pleaseth Me.
I love not much the off’ring-fire;
’Tis mercy most that I desire.

10 It was for sinners that I came,
To show their sickness, sin and shame,
To call them to repentance meek,
That they might their Physician seek.

11 They who their sin and sickness know,
To their physician swiftly go,
But those who think they need no cure
Know not what use the doctor were.

12 I sought not righteous men, who hate
My teaching and My office great.
With joy alone they come to Me
Who own their own iniquity.

13 Help us, Lord Jesus, Mary’s Son,
That we may our trespasses own,
And hate it ever heartily,
And as our Savior welcome Thee.

do predigt er ihn Gottes Wort,
und nahm sie auf sänftmüthiglich,
erzeig tsich gegen ihn freundlich.

5 Mit ihn er auch zu Tische saß,
ohn Scheu mit ihn redt, trank, und aß,
solchs that den Pharisäern weh,
rüsselten drum seine Jünger.

6 Eurem Meister das nicht gezimmt,
daß er Sündr und Zöllner aufnimmt,
und sich zu solchem Leuten gsellt,
mit ihn trinkt und Collazen hält.

7 Jesus das hört, und zu ihn spricht:
Ein Gsunder darf des Arztes nicht,
wer aber krankt ist, schwach und matt
ein Lust und Lieb zum Doktor hat.

8 Euch aber treugt die Gleißnerei,
ihr meint ihr dörft kein Arzenei,
mit Opfern seis alls ausgericht,
drum ihr meiner gar achtet nicht.

9 HOseas gar viel anders sagt,
Barmherzigkeeit mir wohl behagt,
am Opfer leidt mir nicht sehr viel,
Barmherzigkeit ich haben will.

10 Ich bin drum kommen, daß ich muß
die Sünder fordern zu der Buß,
und ihn ihr Krankheit zeigen an,
auf daß sie Lust zum Arzet han.

11 Wer sein Seuch und Gebrech erkennt,
derselb zum Arzt bald läuft und rennt,
wer aber meint, ihm sei gar wohl,
weiß nicht warzu der Doktor soll.

12 Der Grechten halb bin ich nicht hie,
mein Lehru nd Amt verachten sie,
mit Freud allein annehmen mich,
die für Sünder erkennen sich.

13 Hilf uns, Herr Christ, Mariä Kind,
daß wir erkennen unser Sünd,
und werden ihn von Herzen gramm,
und nehmen dich zum Heiland an.
