Here is my translation of a children’s Ascension hymn, “Himmelfahrt ist heut” (J. W. Hey, d. 1854), published in the Sonntagschulbuch für Ev.-Luth. Gemeinden (1876), among others. It was relatively widespread, especially in hymns for church, school, and home use, in the 1890s.

HAIL, Ascension Day!
All with joy survey
Heaven’s heights that brightly shine,
Open see the gates divine.
2 Great is Jesus’ name,
Who from heaven came
And this day returned again,
At His Father’s side to reign.
3 Angels all rejoice,
And with ringing voice
Joyful go their Lord to meet,
Hailing Him with anthems sweet.
4 Here we children too
Long that scene to view,
For the Lord they see so near
Is the Christ, our Brother dear.
5 Now from heav’n above
He sends gifts of love,
And will at the proper time
Take us to that blessed clime.

alle sehn erfreut
zu dem Himmel hell hinan,
sehn die Pforten aufgethan.
2 Weil ja Jesus Christ,
der vom Himmel ist,
heute wieder ziehet ein,
will bei seinem Vater sein.
3 Und die Englein all
gehn mit lautem Schall
froh entgegen ihrem Herrn,
daß er nun nicht mehr so fern.
4 Und wir Kinder stehn
wollens auch mit sehn,
weil ja der Herr Jesus Christ
unser lieber Bruder ist.
5 Will vom Himmel nun
uns viel Gutes thun,
nimmt uns einst zu rechter Zeit
auf in seine Seligkeit.
