Zu dir erheb ich meine Seel

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Zu dir erheb ich meine Seel” (V. Triller, 16th c.), a paraphrase of Psalm 25, the text of which I take from Tucher’s Ev. Kirchengesang (1848). Interestingly, no variation is found from the form of the text in Leisentritt’s Geistliche Lieder und Psalmen (1573), though Triller’s original publication could not be located at the time of this translation. The proper melody has been set by Praetorius, among others.

Mel.: Zu dir erheb ich meine Seel.

I
LIFT my soul up unto Thee!
My God, let me not be confounded ever.
I trust Thee, my one Hope to be,
Oh, let my foes a mock’ry make me never.
For all who look up unto Thee
Must nevermore ashamèd be,
But those on earth by wrong transgressing
All shame at last shall be possessing.

2 Lord, show to me Thy ways, I pray,
And let the knowledge of Thy truth not fail me!
God, my Salvation, Crown, and Stay,
As here I live, I wait upon Thee daily.
Lord, of Thy mercy mindful be,
Which hath been great eternally,
Grace for my bygone deeds afford me,
Nor for my foolishness reward me!

3 The Lord is good and upright aye,
Therefore will He be kind to sinners lowly,
Nor for their sins cast them away,
But teach the meek Himself His judgments holy,
And them upon the right way lead.
Therefore let all perceive indeed
How truth and mercy are His doing
To those His covenant pursuing.

4 Alas, my sins are very great!
Lord, for Thy name’s sake therefore I implore Thee
Leave me not helpless to my fate,
Let anger yield to mercy, for Thy glory.
The Lord makes those who fear His name
As heirs His fullest bounties claim,
The righteous way to them He teacheth,
His mystery to them He preacheth.

5 T’ward God mine eyes I ever turn,
For He shall pluck me from all nets that bind me.
O Lord, my misery discern!
Have mercy, that confusion may not find me!
My heart is filled with great dismay:
O bring me out, Lord God, I pray!
My sins with great affliction grieve me.
Vouchsafe in mercy to forgive me!

6 Mine enemies are many, Lord,
My soul with cunning hatefully surrounding.
Alone in Thee I trust assured;
My soul with Thee let find relief abounding.
For this the faithful church on Thee
Waits upright, with integrity,
And prays through Jesus Christ, her Savior,
Thou wilt from ills redeem her ever.

GERMAN
Zu dir erheb ich meine Seel,
o mein Gott, laß mich nicht in Schanden bleiben!
Ich setz allein auf dich mein Heil;
laß meine Feinde Spott nicht aus mir treiben:
Denn alle, die da sehn auf dich,
die dürfen nimmer schämen sich,
die aber Unrecht thun auf Erden,
müssen aufs letzt zu Schanden werden.

2 Herr, deinen Weg wollst zeigen mir
und deine Wahrheit zu erkennen geben!
O Herr, mein Heil, mein höchste Zier,
Ich wart auf dich täglich in meinem Leben.
Gedenk an dein Barmherzigkeit,
denn sie ist groß von Ewigkeit.
Mein vorig Thun wollst gar vergessen,

denn ich steh aller Hülfen bloß;
laß deinen Zorn mit deiner Gnaden stillen!
Der Herr läßt erben all sein Gut,
den rechten Weg sie weisen thut
und sein Geheimnis offenbaren,
die seine Furcht mit Ernst bewahren.

5 Auf Gott ich stets mein Augen wend,
denn er erlöset mich aus meinen Banden.
O Herr, schau an mein groß Elend,
erbarm dich mein, daß ich nicht werd zu Schanden:
denn mein Herz steht in großer Noth;
daraus hilf mir, o Herr, mein Gott!
Ich thu vor Sünd in Ängsten schweben,
die wollst mir gnädiglich vergeben!

6 Herr, meiner Feinde sind so viel,
die haben mich mit List hässlich umfangen.
Auf dich allein ich trauen will;
laß meine Seele Trost bei dir erlangen!
Diß wartet auch mit Innigkeit
mit mir die fromme Christenheit,
und bittet solchs in Christi Namen,
du wollest sie erretten, Amen.

Fest und hoch auf dem Thron

Here is my translation of V. Triller's hymn for the Ascension, "Fest und hoch auf dem Thron," a translation of the traditional hymn for Vespers in Ascensiontide, "Festum nunc celebre" (Theodulf, early 9th c. - I translated that last year). Many old translations existed for this hymn of unusual meter (Asclepiads and Gliconics, which I have adapted to a final stressed syllable). Another translation, by the Bohemians, is "Christi Auffahrt und Erhöhung." The first melody is the original Latin one from Bezelius (Magdeburg 1613), the second is a simplified version of the Soprano line (melody line) as found in the 18th c. Pforta school hymnal, Hymnorum precumque formulae ad Portensium Alumnorum usum (Leipzig, 1777).

Transcription from Hymnorum Precumque formulae . . . pp. 52f.

SEATED high on the Throne,
Glorious is Christ the Son,
  Clothed in bright majesty
  Brilliant in Deity,
Now His realm He hath set
Firm against ev'ry threat,
And Satan, who had bound us fast.

2. Leading by His decree
Captive captivity,
  He doth the Spirit send,
Men in their need to mend,
And His gifts to bestow,
That in all truth we go,
And to console in every ill.

3. Satan's works to defy,
And poor man to supply
  With His protection sure,
  Preachers He doth secure,
O'er the earth for us men
Christendom to sustain
  By Holy Word and Sacrament.

4. As with dauntless ascent
He into glory went;
  So He cometh again
  With His angelic train,
Hailed the Champion of might,
Judgment to pass as right,
And give to all their just reward.

5. Jesus Christ, Lord and God,
King o'er the heavens broad
And the earth Thou hast made:
  Graciously lend Thine aid,
That we may ever be
Lifting our hearts to Thee
  Awaiting here Thy glad return.

6. Praise to God be assigned,
Who hath so loved mankind
That He gave us His Son,
  To be our Mercy-Throne,
That by Him who doth reign
We might His Spirit gain,
And go His blessedness to know.

GERMAN
1. Fest und hoch auf dem Thron
pranget des Menschen Sohn
in seiner Herrlichkeit
mit Göttlicher Klarheit,
hat sein Reich aufgericht
wider den Bösewicht,
der uns so hart gebunden hielt.

2. Nahm gefangen herrlich
das Gefängnis mit sich,
und schickt uns seinen Geist,
daß er uns Beistand leist,
und seine Gaben schenkt,
in alle Wahrheit lenkt
und tröstet uns in aller Not.

3. Der dem Satan zu Trotz
und uns armen zum Schutz
richt auf das Predigamt
und gibt uns allesamt
sein Wort und Sakrament
in aller Welte End,
damit er uns erhalten will.

4. Wie er mit Freidigkeit
aufsteig zur Herrlichkeit,
so wird er kommen dar
mit aller Engel Schaar
als ein mächtiger Held,
wird richten alle Welt
und geben jederem seinen Lohn.

5. O Herr Gott, Jesu Christ,
der du ein König bist
über Himmel und Erd:
Hilf gnädig deiner Heerd,
daß sie stets inniglich
ihr Herz haben auf dich
und deiner Zukunft nehmen wahr.

6. Lob sei dem wahren Gott
der uns also lieb hat
und gibt uns seinen Sohn
zu einem Gnadenthron,
daß wir durch ihn am meist
erlangen seinen Geist
und kommen so zur Seligkeit.

Komm, Herr Gott, Heiliger Geist

Here is my translation of the "Pentecost Prosa," "Komm, Herr Gott, Heiliger Geist" (V. Triller, mid 16th c.). By prosa Triller no doubt meant a hymn that could be used instead of the Tropus or Sequence. No melody has been discovered by me yet. It requires 777.777 (line accent: ´- ´- ´- ´) with an AABCCB rhyme structure. This puts it in a similar class, though with fewer lines, with "Weltlich Ehr und zeitlich gut." It has become clear that Triller based the meter on Veni sancte Spiritus, so I here refer that tune, until evidence of another come to the fore, and here provide a simplified form of the melody, perhaps as it might have been sung in the 16th c. by the people.

COME, Lord God and Holy Ghost,
Thee we need of all the most,
Heav’nly knowledge to obtain:
Come, teach us aright to know,
To the Father how to go,
Lest our life have been in vain.

2. Highest Pledge that we can name!
Keep us from all sin and shame,
That in us the devil’s pow’r,
Vicious anger, craft, and spite
By God’s Word be shattered quite!
Make us Thine from hour to hour,

3. Trusting Christ, true Man and God,
Who for us endured the rod
In His love and faithfulness.
To Him let us ceaselessly,
Good and faithful servants be,
Daily new in Thy good grace.

4. Heav’nly Couns’lor, strength impart
To our fainting mind and heart
In our every time of need,
Oh, grant strength in great concern
When the foe doth rage and burn,
And our life to death doth speed.

5. For without Thee in that hour
No one else on earth has pow’r
To assist in our dismay;
Purge our conscience, guilt efface
By the washing of Thy grace,
Ever keep us in Thy way.

Komm, Herr Gott, Heiliger Geist,
wir bedürfen dein am meist,
zu lernen die höchste Kunst:
Komm und lehr uns recht verstehn,
wie man soll zum Vater gehn,
daß wir hie nicht sein um sonst.

2. O du allerhöchstes Pfand,
behüt uns vor Sünd und Schand,
daß in uns des Teufels Reich
und sein großer Zorn und Grimm
werd zerstört durch Gottes Stimm,
daß wir aller gläuben gleich.

3. An Christum, den Mensch und Gott,
der für uns viel angst und Not
leid aus lauter Lieb und Treu,
und daß wir ihm dienen recht
als die frommen treuen Knecht
und durch dich ganz werden neu.

4. Du Göttlicher Tröster gut,
stärk uns unser Herz und Mut
in aller Trübseligkeit,
zuvor in dem Kummer groß,
wenn der Feind uns pflegt ohn Maß
in des Todes Fährligkeit.

5. Weil ohn dich in solchem Fall
ist niemand ganz überall
der bei uns solchs wirken kann.
Mach uns die Gewissen drein
durch das Bad der Gnaden dein
und halt uns auf solcher Bahn.
