Warum willtu doch für Morgen

Here is my translation of the hymn “Warum willtu doch für Morgen” (L. Laurenti, 1700) based on the Gospel for the 15th Sunday after Trinity. The melody is “Warum soll ich mich denn grämen.”

WHY be anxious for tomorrow
O my heart? Come, depart
From this heathen sorrow!
What avails thy daily weeping?
God thy need knows indeed
And His watch is keeping.

2 Soul and body God has given,
Life and limb! Cling to Him
Who made earth and heaven.
All things still He will provide thee;
Firmly cleave; He’ll not leave,
But will stay beside thee.

3 Ask not what thyself shall nourish;
God’s decree plants for thee
Blessings soon to flourish.
He, thy body thus sustaining,
Will the rest grant, as best,
At His own ordaining.

4 More thy body is than drinking
And than food; God is good
Nor will leave thee sinking;
Trust that He His pow’r will show him
And supply wet and dry
Who in faith would know Him.

5 Be not anxious for thy clothing,
Jesus says, who arrays
Flow’rs which merit nothing;
See the blooms in meadows growing,
With them there see the fair
Trees in forest growing.

6 Is a bird concerned, when singing
In the tree merrily,
Who its meal is bringing
Or will to the water lead it?
No, with bread it is fed
Just as heav’n will feed it.

7 Oh, how faith on earth is failing!
Were it not, we had got
Cure for all our ailing.
Cling to God with faith unshaken!
Though we see scarcity,
We are not forsaken.

8 He who seeks to dwell in heaven
And possess righteousness
O’er all treasures given
Will find more than he can number
Or can think: food and drink—
All as ’twere in slumber.

9 Leave the world to vain endeavor,
But my soul, let thy goal
Be thy Lord and Savior;
Seek Him out, who food in season
Has supplied, though He hide
Often, and with reason.

10 If my faith He test and measure,
And remove what I love
Of this earthly treasure
’Twill be for my good and blessing,
Though God may take away
All I am possessing.

11 He has pow’r for restoration:
When He takes, firm He makes
His Word for salvation;
Oh, how many true believers
Joyfully live thus free
From care’s anxious fevers!

12 Cares they leave to God, as bidden,
Waiting still on His will
Any hour He’s hidden;
As God wills, they are contented—
Gain or loss, joy or cross
Shall not be lamented.

13 God cannot in need deny them;
When they cry, He on high
Hears, and will supply them:
Soon He comes with consolation,
When the woe seems to grow
Nigh to devastation.

14 Only for their soul they worry,
And to hide in the side
Of the Rock they hurry—
To the wounds that won our pardon:
There lies peace and release
From their toil and burden.

15 Jesus, joy-bestowing Master!
Sun and Light, cheering Sight,
Soul-refreshing Pasture!
Take my soul into Thy keeping,
And I’ll not lack for aught
While awake or sleeping.

16 Where I fail or am offended,
Let it be unto Thee,
Mighty God, commended!
Calm, I cast my cares before Thee;
Lord be Thou! I will bow
And on knee adore Thee.

17 I will always thank Thee, Savior,
With all cheer while I’m here
And will never waver;
Dearest Jesus, praise be given
To Thy name; Thee I claim,
Hope and Life in heaven!

GERMAN

1 Warum willtu doch für Morgen,
armes Herz, immerwärts
als ein Heide sorgen?
Wozu dient dein täglichs Grämen?
Weil Gott will in der Still
sich der Not annehmen.

2 Gott hat dir geschenkt das Leben,
Seel und Leib, darum bleib
ihm allein ergeben;
Er wird ferner alles schenken;
traue fest, er verläßt
nicht, die an ihn denken.

3 Sage nicht, wes soll ich essen?
Gott hat dir schon allhier
soviel zugemessen,
daß der Leib sich kann ernähren,
Übriges wird indes
Gottes Hand bescheren.

4 Es ist mehr als Trank und Speisen
dieser Leib, darum gläub,
daß Gott wird erweisen,
daß er Speis und Trank kann geben
dem, der sich festiglich
ihm ergiebt im Leben.

5 Sorgstu, wie du dich sollt kleiden?
Jesus spricht, sorge nicht:
Solches thun die Heiden;
Schau die Blumen auf den Feldern,
wie so schön diese stehn,
und die Bäum im Wäldern.

6 Sorgt ein Vogel auf den Zweigen
wenn er singt, hüpft und springt,
wer ihm soll anzeigen,
was er essen soll und trinken?
Nein, ach, nein, er allein
folgt des Himmels Winken.

7 Ach, der Glaube fehlt auf Erden,
wär er da, müßt uns ja
was uns not ist, werden.
Wer Gott kann im Glauben fassen
Der wird nicht, wenns gebricht
von ihm sein verlassen.

8 Wer Gerechtigkeit nachtrachtet
und zugleich Gottes Reich
über alles achtet,
der wird wahrlich nach Verlangen,
Speis und Trank lebenslang,
wie im Schlaf, empfangen.

9 Laß die Welt denn sich bemühen
immerhin, ach mein Sinn
soll zu Jesu fliehen;
er wird geben, was mir fehlet,
ob ers oft unverhofft
eine Weil verhehlet.

10 Will er prüfen meinen Glauben
und die Gab, die ich hab,
mir gar lassen rauben
so muß mir zum Besten kommen,
wenn Gott mir alles schier
hat hinweg genommen.

11 Er kann alles wiedergeben
wenn er nimmt, so bestimmt
Er sein Wort zum Leben;
ach, wie viele fromme Seelen
leben so, und sind froh
ohne Sorg und Quälen.

12 Sie befehlen Gott die Sorgen
wie er will, und sind still
immer im Verborgen,
was Gott will ist ihr Vergnügen,
und wies er ohngefähr
will mit ihnen fügen.

13 Doch kann ihnen nicht versagen
Gott ihr Brot in der Not
wenn er hört ihr Klagen;
er kommt wahrlich sie zu trösten,
eh mans meint, und erscheint
wenn die Not am größten.

14 Ihre Sorg ist für der Seelen
und ihr Lauf geht hinauf
zu den Felsenhöhlen,
zu des Herren Jesu Wunden;
hier sind sie aller Müh
und der Not entbunden.

15 Nun Herr Jesu, meine Freude,
meine Sonn, meine Wonn,
meiner Seelen Weide,
sorge nur für meiner Seelen,
so wird mir auch allhier
nichts am Leibe fehlen.

16 Alles sei dir unverhohlen,
was  mir fehlt, was mich quält,
großer Gott, befohlen;
sorge du, so will ich schweigen
und für dir nach Gebühr
meine Knie beugen.

17 Ich will dir mit Freuden danken
fort und fort, hier und dort,
und will nimmer wanken;
Lob und Preis sei deinem Namen!
Sei mein Teil, Hülf und Heil,
liebster Jesu, Amen.
