Der Gnadenbrunn thut fließen

Here is my translation of the hymn“Der Gnadenbrunn thut fließen” (reworking 1539, by ? Conz Leffel), appointed by Ludecus (1589) for Trinity III and the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene. It might also serve as a good paraphrase of Psalm 42. The melody is proper, but appears earlier as a secular one.

1. The fount of grace is flowing,
Come, sinner, drink thy fill:
Confess what thou art owing,
Thy God is beck’ning still,
With glance of kind affection.
Now by His faithful Word
He gives thy feet direction,
For Christ alone can help afford.

2. Thy works avail thee never,
To Jesus thou must go,
If thou wouldst live forever;
He will that life bestow.
He made wrath’s reparation
With His most precious blood;
Ours was but condemnation,
His suff’ring is our highest good.

3. ’Tis vain to trust thy powers
Escape from sin to find,
Fast wither wisdom’s flowers,
And sin pervades the mind.
Beware of Satan’s murmur,
Who seeks thy soul to hurt:
God’s Word and voice are firmer,
And sinners o’er the earth convert.

4. My soul with thirst is daunted,
And longs to hear God’s voice,
Like as a stag when hunted
In water doth rejoice.
O Christ, Thy food avail me,
Thy healing, living wine,
My soul must quickly fail me,
So strengthen me with pow’r divine!

5. Let all from thirst who suffer,
Draw near, their thirst to slake,
Refreshment here discover,
Of Spirit, too, partake.
All ye who trust the Savior,
Yea, Christ the Lord, who gave
His life, will live forever;
He will your soul and body save.

6. The water brooks are pouring
And down from heaven flow.
With food our souls restoring,
He doth true life bestow.
The fount of grace and blessing
And every good is He,
Our wounds of sin redressing,
He grants us life eternally.

GERMAN
1. Der Gnadenbrunn thut fließen,
den soll man trinken.
O Sünder, du sollst büßen,
dir thut Gott winken
mit seinen gütigen Augen
und richt’ dir deinen Fuß
wohl durch das Wort des Glaubens,
Christus allein dir helfen muß.

2. Dein Thun ist zwar zu nichten;
zum ewigen Leben
auf Christum mußt dich richten,
der wird dir’s geben;
der hat versöhnt den Zoren
mit seinem teuern Blut,
wir waren all verloren,
sein Leiden ist den Gläubigen gut.

3. Du sollst dir selbst nicht trauen,
zu tilgen deine Sünd’,
auf Menschenlehr nicht bauen;
Vernunft erdicht’ viel Sünd’.
Satan thut dich anwehen,
er möcht dich stürzen um;
das Wort Gotts thut nicht schweigen
und macht gar manchen Sünder fromm.

4. Mein Seel’ die thut sehr dürsten
nach Gottes Stimme,
recht wie ein gejagten Hirschen
zum kühlen Brunnen.
O Jesu, thu mich laben
mit deim heilsamen Saft,
mein Seel’ wird mir verzagen,
stärk mich mit deiner göttlichen Kraft.

5. Die solchen Durst empfinden,
die sollen kommen,
die sollen Labung finden,
den Geist auch nehmen.
Wer glaubet an den HErren,
ich mein an Jesum Christ,
wie uns die Schrift thut lehren,
ein solcher Christe selig ist.

6. Das Wasser thut herquellen,
vom Himmel geben.
Er speiset unsre Seelen
ins ewig Leben.
Er ist der Brunn der Gnaden
und aller Gütigkeit,
wäscht ab der Sünden Schaden
und giebt die ewige Seligkeit.
