1. God be praised! The promised One
And the Seed of Abraham is now come;
Circumcision here we see—
The prophetic, mystic decree,—
Now perfectly fulfilled:
Christ the Savior’s blood in Canaan was spilled.
2. Abraham this law received,
And by faith alone God’s cov’nant believed,
For the Seed and Canaan both,
A token and tangible oath ,
To point him e’er to Christ,
For as long as the pact was not despised.
3. Furthermore God gave this sign
To the tribe of Isra’l as law divine,
That it be His pleasing host,
Mingling not with heathendom lost,
Until the Seed should come,
And receive it for a benediction.
4. Yet the one whose flesh was cut
With intention false, believing not,
But despised the covenant
Of the comfort and confidence
Which God had made with him,
He to God was an abomination.
5. All God’s laws and teachings pure
On His chosen people burdensome were,
Yet they did not leave the chore,
But the Lord’s yoke constantly bore,
When they failed it ever,
They took comfort in their promised Savior.
6. When at last the Savior came
By taking here on earth His fleshly frame,
He at once to suff’ring went,
Was circumcised, though innocent,
The cov’nant’s sign to bear,
For to Him its reach went, and ended there.
7. To the Jordan came the Christ,
The Father spoke as the Son was baptized,
Showing us the basis of
His new cov’nant of boundless love,
That on earth and in heav’n
Grace and life with Him might to us be giv’n.
8. He who is elect of God,
And reborn by His true, quickening Word,
Trusting from His heart aright,
Holding to the Covenant tight,—
Christ proclaims him to be
From all of his sins and transgressions free.
9. If the feast he keepeth still,
Nor leaves God and His assembled people,
The eternal Paradise,
He shall surely see with his eyes,
For that which Christ hath sworn
He keeps also, and leaves him not forlorn.
10. But whoever turns from thence,
And will not come back in true repentance,
But despises without dread
What God wills and hath ordainèd,—
He lies in wrath and scorn,—
It were better if he never were born.
11. Therefore, O Lord Jesus Christ,
Thou who on our behalf wast circumcised,
Circumcise our heart and mind
By Thy grace so tender and kind,
That we may constantly
Lead a godly life in all piety.
12. By the blood which Thou hast shed
Grant us all to share in this hope so glad,
Ever to partake of Thee,
Rest to find, and salvation free,
Worshiping in common
Thy most holy name forever. Amen.

GERMAN
1. Lob sei Gott denn der Samen,
Abrahe verheißen, ist nun kommen,
die fleischliche Beschneidung,
und figürliche Verschreibung
bei dem gelobten Land
wird vollendet durch Christum den Heiland.
2. Gott hat sie dem Abraham
der sein Bund mit starkem Glauben annahm,
auf den Samen und aufs Land
gegeben zum Zeichen und Pfand
daß sie ihm zeugen sollt,
da er seinen Bund nicht verrücken wollt.
3. Auch hat sie Gott für ein Recht
geboten dem Israelischen Gschlecht,
daß es ein Gottselig Heer
und mit Heiden nicht vermischt wär,
bis dieser Samen käm,
und sie auch zur Benedeiung annehm.
4. Wer aber sein Fleisch beschneidt
das Zeichen empfing ohn alle Wahrheit
oder in des Herren Bund,
den er mit ihn machet nicht stund:
des Trost und Zuversicht
war ein Greuel vor Gottes Angesicht.
5. Das Gesetz und Gottes Lehr,
war den auserwählten auch trefflich schwer,
dennoch ließen sie nicht nach,
sondern trugen ihres Herrn Joch,
wo sich Gebroch befand,
da tröstet sie der verheißne Heiland.
6. Da aber der Heiland kam,
durch die Menschheit, die er allhie annahm,
fing er bald an zu leiden,
ließ sich unschuldig beschneiden,
nam sein Bundzeichen hin,
denn es reichet nicht weiter denn auf ihn.
7. Ging hin und empfing die Tauf
Tat darnach seinen Göttlichen mund auf,
lehret uns den Rechten Grund,
den neuen und ewigen Bund,
daß wir hie Gnad und Heil,
und dort im Himmel mit ihm hätten Theil.
8. Wer nun von Gott auserkorn
durch das Wort des Lebens wird neugeborn,
dem recht glaubt aus Herzengrund
und treulich bewahrt des Herrn Bund,
dem zeuget Christus sei,
daß er aller seiner Sünden los sei.
9. So er sich den Fest anhält,
von Gott und seiner Gemein nicht abfällt,
hoffet er nicht ungewiß,
auf das ewige Paradiß:
denn was Christus verspricht
das hält er auch, und thut ihm anders nicht.
10. Wer aber zurücke geht,
abfällt und durch Buß nicht wieder auffsteht,
oder das hat für ein Spott,
was Gott will und verordnet hat,
der bleibt in Gottes Zorn,
darum wär ihm viel besser nie geborn.
11. Ei, nun, Herre Jesu Christ,
der du unser halben beschnitten bist,
beschneid auch unser Gemüt,
und unser Herz durch deine Güt,
auf daß wir stets bereit
uns üben in aller Gottseligkeit.
12. Hilf durch dein Blutvergießen,
daß wir freudiger Hoffnung genießen
in deiner Theilhaftigkeit,
Ruh erlangen und Seligkeit,
deim heiligen Namen
in Ewigkeit Lob zu singen. Amen.
