Falscher Lehr und Heuchelleben

 Here is my translation of the hymn “Falscher Lehr und Heuchelleben” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Trinity VIII (Gospel), where he suggests the tune “Werde munter mein Gemüthe” with the note “The last melody is repeated.” This is another instance of a devotional rhyme being adapted to hymnody. Since this proved unsatisfactory in later hymnals where it was taken up, a proper tune was eventually published by Bronner in 1715, which I give here from Zahn.

NOW to lives and doctrines lying
All the world as one is flying;
Everywhere the eye is turnèd,
God’s acclaim is shamed and spurnèd!
Faithful God, Thou wilt, awaking,
Thine own cause in hand be taking;
Thou Thy foes in fear wilt scatter,
Who with sheepskins cheat and flatter;
Persecutors Thou wilt chasten,
And to save Thy sheep wilt hasten!

2 Let the wolf not tear nor take them;
Thou canst dash his teeth and break them;
Give us faithful teachers ever,
Spread Thy kingdom’s high endeavor,
Give to every land and station
Thy pure Word and revelation;
Let us bring forth fruit most precious,
Proving by our actions gracious
This our faith, and so adore Thee
Here on earth and there in glory!

Falscher Lehr und Heuchelleben
ist die ganze Welt ergeben,
wo man sich nur jetzt hinwendet,
da wird Gottes Ehr geschändet.
Treuer Gott! du wirst aufwachen,
und ausführen deine Sachen,
du wirst deine Feinde schrecken,
die sich mit dem Schafspelz decken,
die Verfolger wirst du strafen,
und selbst helfen deinen Schafen.

2 Laß sie nicht den Wolf zerreißen,
du kannst seine Zähn zerschmeißen,
gieb uns allzeit treue Lehrer,
sei du deines Reichs Vermehrer,
gieb dein Wort in allem Lande,
rein und lauter allem Stande,
laß uns edle Früchte tragen,
was wir gläuben, was wir sagen,
allzeit in der That beweisen,
daß wir hier und dort dich preisen.
