Gott ist und bleibt der Wundermann

Here is my translation of the hymn “Gott ist und bleibt der Wundermann” (J. Olearius, 1671), a hortatory trust hymn with reference to God’s omnipotence and providential love, from the author’s Singekunst for Trinity VII. There he indicates that the Gospel and Epistle may be sung to “Meine Seel erhebt den Herren” and that the “usual” hymns are “Warum betrübst,” “Verzage nicht,” “Vater unser,” “Nun laßt uns Gott,” and “Nun lob mein Seel.” His “encouragment from the Gospel” is the following text. I include my previously translated doxology as indicated by the German.


Mel.: Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.
 

GOD is the Man of Wonders still,
He can make little much at will;
Who trusts in God, no lack hath he,
For God knows well what aileth thee.

2 If thou be every help denied,
If much by grief and trouble tried,
Then cry to Him, who faithful is,
Whose Word His succor promises.

3 When He will help, e’en wind and wave
Must rise to minister and save;
More doth the crumb in God’s own hand
Than haughty minds can understand.

4 If labors fail, if hopes deceive,
Then to the Word of God but cleave;
In God in every matter trust
Who shall bring it to pass, and must.

5 Glory to God the Father, Son,
And Holy Ghost upon one throne:
Unto the Holy Trinity
Be laud and praise eternally.

Gott ist und bleibt der Wundermann,
der viel aus wenig machen kann,
wer Gott vertraut, dem mangelts nicht,
denn Gott weiß wohl, was dir gebricht.

2 Wenn dir wird alle Hülf versagt,
wenn Angst und Noth dich drückt und plagt,
so schrei zu ihm, er läßt dich nicht,
weil sein Wort Trost und Hülf verspricht.

3 Wenn er will helfen, muß geschwind
dir dienen Wasser, Luft und Wind,
ein Bröcklein Brot auf Gotts Hand
thut mehr als Witz, Kunst und Verstand.

4 Drum wenn dein Thun will nirgend fort,
so halt dich nur an Gottes Wort,
trau nun auf Gott in allen Sachn,
hoff nur auf ihn, er wirds wohl machn!

5 Ehr sei dem Vater, etc.
