Wer sollt nicht Lust haben zu sein

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wer sollt nicht Lust haben zu sein” (L. Helmbold, 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity XIII, with title: “Of the blessed time of the New Testament (or new covenant).”

Mel.: Christ, der du bist der helle Tag.

WHAT Christian would not eagerly

Within God’s church a prophet be

Or in the king’s vocation reign

O’er all his subjects and domain?

2 Indeed, he thinks, whose mind is sound,

No better than these two is found,

And saith: O what a people blest

Lived at that time in joy and rest!

3 Yea, most of all in Israël:

How wise was ancient Samuel;

How mighty David on his throne;

How wondrously God graced His own!

4 But wherein are we worse today?

If we believe what Christ doth say,

We better live than they of old.

Oh, but our blessedness behold!

5 We have the sweet New Testament

Of Christ, from heav’n to earth who went,

Was born true Man in Bethl’hem here,

Whose angel bids us have no fear.

6 For tidings of great joy he brings,

And sweetly still the anthem rings

Of heav’nly spirits, angels, powers:

To God be glory, peace is ours!

7 The Holy Ghost doth earthward fly,

The Father’s voice doth testify,

Commanding all to hear His Son,

That peace may come to everyone.

8 The Spirit, sent, inflames the band,

Their line goes out to every land,

To herald Christ to hearts depraved:

He who believes is just and saved.

9 We baptized are as He decreed,

From sin, death, hell, and devil freed,

His Body_and Blood our food and drink:

And blest are they who this bethink!

10 In truth, they would not ask instead

The prophet’s mantle o’er them spread,

Nor kingly crown and majesty.

’Tis more, a Christian man to be.

11 God, help, my heart is far too slight,

And knows now how to grasp aright

This Word of blessedness from Thee.

Lord, strengthen me eternally. Amen.

GERMAN

Wer sollt nicht Lust haben zu sein

ein Prophet in Gottes Gemein?

Oder in königlichem Stand

wohl herrschen über Leut und Land?

2 Wahrlich wer recht bei Sinnen ist

hält beides für das allerbest,

und denkt, o welch selige Leut

sind doch gewest zu jener Zeit.

3 Besondern im Volk Israel,

wie weise war doch Samuel?

Wie stark der David in seim Reich?

Der Herr begabt sie wunderlich.

4 Aber was mangelt uns jetzund?

Wenn wir glauben des Herren Mund,

o leben wir zur bessern Zeit

denn sie: Bedenk die Seligkeit.

5 Das neue Testament wir han

von Christo, wie derselber kam,

Gott Mensch geborn zu Bethlehem,

hieß uns ohn Furcht der Engel sein.

6 Ja große Freud verkünidget,

es laut noch wohl das alte Lied

der ganze himmelischen Schar,

Ehr sei Gott, Fried uns immerdar.

7 Der Heilig Geist heraber fleugt,

des Vaters Stimm den Sohn bezeugt,

heißt uns ihm alle hören zu,

kein Seel soll bleiben ohne Ruh.

8 Der Heilig Geist ist drum gesandt,

die Jünger gehn in alle Land,

und predigen von Jesu Christ;

Herr, stärke mich in Ewigkeit. Amen.

 Psalm LXXIV.

An instruction of Asaph.

¶ Psalm LXXIV is a psalm of supplication against the enemies who persecute the congregation of God, desolate churches and schools in the land together with the cities, and in addition blaspheme God as being unable to save His people, particularly when he allows His own to suffer a while under the cross, as this psalm also laments that God contains them too long, and prays that He would restrain the enemies; and gives the consolation that God will save, and teaches that because He performs all help that occurs on earth, it should be sought from Him alone; extols and glorifies God’s great wonders, power, and deeds on that account. We can also pray to Him against the present destroyers of rightly ordered churches, who banish Christian teachers, deprive the people of the preaching of the divine Word, and instead force upon them false doctrine and human judgments.

Ecclesia querulans [The Church lamenting].

Wenn sein Volk züchtigt Gott der Herr,    When God the Lord doth chasten His,

denn toben alle Feinde sehr    Then greatly rave all enemies;

zuletzt Gott unser Bitt erhört,    At last God hears our suppliant voice

und alle seine Feind zerstört.    And all His enemies destroys.

GOD, help, how must it ever be

That Thou so silent goest,

And with such stern severity

Thyself to us now showest,

Who dost from Thee Thy people cast,

And for Thy sheep great anger hast

That dwell upon Thy pasture.

2 Thy congregation keep in mind,

Which Thou didst gain by buying,

And with Thy blood pure and refined

Didst purchase by Thy dying.

Lord Jesus, on mount Zion think,

Whose dwelling rests upon its brink;

Oh, may Thou never leave it!

3 Tread underfoot Thine enemy

And bring them their undoing,

Who stand against thee wickedly

To work Thy church’s ruin,

And destroy Thy holy place,

And overturn all gifts of grace

Which Thou, Lord God, hast founded.

4 Those who are Thine arch-enemies

Stand in Thy houses, roaring,

And raise their idols as they please,

The doctrine true deploring.

What they deem right all men must hold

And worship as a god of gold,

And as the truth esteem it.

5 In school, where youth should justly be

Taught in God’s Scripture Holy,

And in the church continually

Christ be presented solely,

Free will and man’s good nature now

Are glorified; to these men bow,

And God’s good grace diminish.

6 And where false doctrine is not hailed

Nor as their god addressèd,

That place by judgment is assailed,

That truth might be suppressèd.

They there apply the curse and ban

And hunt and drive out many a man,

Who but the truth defended.

7 The axes in the temple flash,

Among the beams they clatter,

With wood the axe and hammer clash,

The carven work they scatter,

The sanctuary sinks in flame,

The holy dwelling of Thy name

They raze to earth, defilèd.

8 Within their hearts they say: Let us

These heretics now plunder,

God’s houses all with fury thus

Burn down and tear asunder.

Lay waste church and school for sport,

And once again commence to court

The Antichrist with fervor.

9 This evil now hath gone so far,

Our signs of God’s commanding

We see no more: all churches are

Laid waste, nigh empty standing.

No prophets true are left to preach,

The doctrine pure is out of reach,

And everywhere excluded.

10 O God, how long must we in shame

Bear th’ adversary’s taunting,

And th’ enemy blaspheme Thy name,

And their own name be vaunting?

Why dost Thy thus withdraw Thy hand

And leave Thy troubled church to stand

Alone in such affliction?

11 Yet in my God I comfort take,

My King, who works salvation

And doth His might apparent make

Here and in every nation,

For all salvation He hath wrought

Within the earth; without Him naught

Can be for long enduring.

12 Dividing by Thy srength the sea,

The dragons’ heads Thou brakest,:

The wicked, who conspire ’gainst Thee,

Thou soon ashamèd makest.

Thou brak’st the heads of whales apart

And gav’st for meat, to cheer the heart

Far in wild countries dwelling.

13 Thou makest streams and rivers play,

To fruit the lands tomorrow,

Thou takest them again away,

And fillest man with sorrow.

Thou dri’st the mighty waters up

So that no man can fill a cup,

Thou giv’st and tak’st at pleasure.

14 Thine is the day, yea, and the night,

The sun and stars in heaven,

Thou mad’st their courses sure and right,

Where they are gladly driven.

Thou dost the lands with borders ring,

And summer, autumn, winter, spring

In graceful round appointed.

15 Therefore remember now, O Lord,

The foe doth so revile Thee,

And dreadfully the foolish horde

Blaspheme Thy name, defile Thee,

It cuts us to the marrow deep,

To see these things, and blood we weep

To hear their wicked slander.

16 The soul of Thy poor turtledove

Give not to beasts so vicious!

Deprive not of Thy saving love

The flock to Thee once precious.

Forget us not so utterly,

But of Thy cov’nant mindful be,

And leave us not to perish.

17 The land is everywhere laid waste

And woefully distressèd,

Her houses gutted and disgraced,

The poor are sore oppressèd.

Let not the needy flee in shame,

For only to Thy precious name

These wretched ones give praises.

18 Arise, O God of faithfulness,

And plead Thy cause, I pray Thee!

Remember me in my distress,

And all the scorn fools pay Thee,

Who daily now would Thee defame,

Of whom not one reveres Thy name,

According to Thy pleasure.

19 Forget not all the cries uncouth

Of foes, both Thine and ours,

Who to conceal Thy light and truth

Exert their fullest powers.

Their tumult and their raging sore

Continually grows more and more,

With them there is no ceasing!

GERMAN

Hilf Gott, wie geht das immer zu,

daß du so gar still schweigest,

und gegen uns dich jetzund nu

so hart und ernst erzeigest,

verstößest uns so weit von dir,

und zörnest also girmmig sehr

über die Schaf deinr Weide.

2 Ach Herr, gedenk an dein Gemein,

die du vor längst erworben,

denn du mit deinem Blut so rein

erlöst, vor sie gestorben,

an den Berg Zion denk, Herr Christ,

auf welchem deine Wohnung ist,

die wöllst du nicht verlassen.

3 Mit Füßen tritt auf deine Feind,

und stoß sie gar zu Boden,

die sie dir gar zu wider sind,

dein lieb Kirch auszurotten,

verderben gar dein Heiligthum,

und kehren alles um und um,

was du, Herr Gott, gestiftet.

4 Die ganz widerwärtigen dein

brüllen in deinen Häusern,

und setzen ihre Götzen drein,

der rechten Lehr sich äußern,

was sie gut dünkt muß jedermann

als einen Götzen beten an,

und für die Wahrheit halten.

5 In Schulen, da man Gottes Wort

der Jugend sollt vorsagen,

und auch in Kirchen fort und fort

Christum allein vortragen,

da wird jetzund gepreiset nur

der freie Will und gut Natur,

Gottes Gnad zu verkleinern.

6 Und wo man nicht die falsche Lehr

als ein Abgott anbetet,

da geht alsbald ein Urtheil schwer,

[du]rch Lehr zu untertreten,

da fäht man schwind zu bannen an

und zu verjagen manchen Mann,

nur um der Wahrhet willen.

7 Man sieht die Äxte blicken her,

wie man in Wald nein heuet

mit Beil und Barten scharpf und schwer,

wirds Tafelwerk zustreuet,

das Heiligthum wird auch verbrannt,

deins Namens Wohnung in deim Land

entweihen sie zugrunde.

8 In ihrem Herzen sprechen sie:

Laßt uns die Ketzer plündern,

all Gottes Häuser im Land hie

mit Grimm sie auch anzünden,

verwüsten KIrchen und die Schuln,

und fahen an wieder zu buln

wohl mit dem Antichriste.

9 Drum ist es kommen nun soweit,

daß wir leider nicht sehen

unsere Zeichen diese Zeit

all Kirchen schier leer stehen,

kein recht Prophet jetzt predigt mehr,

verschloßen ist die reine Lehr

durchaus an allen Orten.

10 Ach Gott, wie lange soll denn noch

der Wiederwärtig schmähen,

und der Feind deinen Namen auch

zu lästern unterstehen?

Warum wendest du ab dein Hand?

und läßest in so schwerem Stand

dein arm, betrübte Kirche.

11 Doch meines Gottes tröst ich mich,

der mein König ist worden,

der alle Hülf thut gwaltiglich

hie und an allen Orten,

all Hülfe die auf Erd geschicht

thut er allein und ohn ihn nicht

irgend was kann bestehen.

hast alles fein geordnet.

15 Darum gedenk doch auch nun, Herr,

wie dich der Feind so schmähet.

Ein thöricht Volk lästert auch sehr

dein Namen, welchs uns gehet

Vergiß doch unser nit so gar,

deins Gnadenbunds nimm eben wahr,

und laß uns nicht verderben.

17 Das Land ist allenthalben sehr

und jämmerlich verheeret.

Die Häuser stehn zurissen leer,

die Armen sind beschweret.

Laß sie nicht gehn davon mit Schand,

denn die Elenden in dem Land

allein dein Namen rühmen.

18 Ach mach dich auf, du treuer Gott,

und führ aus deine Sache!

Gedenk an mich in meiner Noth

und an die große Schmache,

die dir jetzt täglich widerfährt

von Thoren, welcher keiner ehrt

dein Namen nach deim Willen.

19 Vergiß auch des Geschreies nicht

deiner und usner Feinde,

dein Wahrheit und das helle Licht

wölln sie nicht lassen Scheine (or scheine[n])

und ihr Toben und Wüten schwer

wird je länger je größer mehr

bein ihn ist kein Aufhören.
