Wach auf, du werthe Christenheit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wach auf, du werthe Christenheit” (B. Derschau, 1639), a general Advent hymn touching on the themes of each Sunday, also including reference to the gospel of the Last Sunday before Advent on the wise virgins.

Mel.: Kommt her zu mir, spricht Gottes Sohn; or
Den Herren meine Seel erhebt

AWAKE, dear Christian Church, awake!
Heed to the joyful season take!
For nigh is thy salvation,
The light of day is come again,
Gone is the gloomy night of sin—
Great cause for jubilation!

2 For God’s own Son comes for our good,
Takes on Himself our flesh and blood,
Becomes our Brother willing!
This little Child, true God and Man,
Shall soon appear, the Father’s plan
For peace on earth fulfilling.

2 O Zion’s daughter, sing with joy!
Upon an ass the Lord draws nigh,
Upon the cross to suffer.
And blest is he who puts his trust
And faith in Christ, the Savior just,
Who doth salvation proffer.

4 He by His Word in Christendom
To every Christian heart doth come
That earnestly would have Him;
Who of His coming maketh light,
Nor by the Word knows Him aright
Rejects what else would save Him.

5 Help, Father, Light of highest worth,
That when Thy Son shall judge the earth,
We then may stand unmovèd,
And as the ten wise virgins, all
With ready lamps, come to the hall
In wedding-dress approvèd.

GERMAN
Wach auf, du werthe Christenheit,
nimm wahr der freudenreichen Zeit,
dein Heil ist nun vorhanden,
das Tageslicht ist wiederbracht,
vergangen ist die finstre Nacht,
daher groß Freud enstanden.

2 Denn Gottes Sohn kommt uns zu gut,
nimmt an sich unser Fleisch und Blut,
will unser Bruder werden,
bald wird bei uns dies Kindelein,
als wahrer Gott und Mensche sein,
und bringen Fried auf Erden.

3 Du Tochter Zion, freu dich sehr,
auf einem Esel kommt der Herr,
am Kreuze will er sterben.
Wohl dem, der seine Zuversicht
und Glauben hat auf ihn gericht,
der wird das Heil ererben.

4 Durch das gehörte Wort allein
kehrt er bei jedem Christen ein,
ders nur nimmt recht zu Herzen,
wer nicht betracht diesen Advent,
Christum durchs Wort nicht recht erkennt,
der wird das Heil verscherzen.

5 Hilf, Vater, hilf, du wahres Licht,
wann dein Sohn halten wird Gericht,
daß wir recht wohl bestehen,
und wie die klugen Jungfräulein
mit Lampen schon gezieret sein,
zur Hochzeit auch eingehen.

Heut verneut die Christenheit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Heut verneut die Christenheit” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for Advent I.

Mel.: Nun komm der Heiden Heiland.

ON this day the church anew
Doth her yearly round pursue,
And the fount whence all is poured
Is the advent of our Lord.

2 Now to Zion rideth He,
That her heart may joyful be.
Glad is Salem, peace’s home,
Since her King to her doth come.

3 Just and righteous comes that King,
Who doth save from Satan’s sting,
Comes in form of mortal poor,
His creation to restore.

4 In this advent cause is had
Why we Christians may be glad
And with many a joyful chord
Find delight in Christ the Lord.

5 Where He cometh not, oh, there
Dwells no gladness, but despair!
Yea, there may not in the least
Be a holy day and feast.

6 There is naught but heresy
’Neath the devil’s tyranny,
Sin and shame, disease and woe,
And eternal death below.

7 From these ills hath Christ our Lord
By His advent all restored,
And new feasts of gladness brought,
To recount His mercies wrought.

8 Sing Hosanna, blessed be
He that cometh graciously
In the Lord’s name unto us!
Ever may we praise Him thus!

9 Praise the Father, Christendom,
Who His Son hath caused to come,
As the Spirit’s words attest,
In like glory ever blest! Amen.

GERMAN

Heut verneut die Christenheit
ihre jahrfestliche zeit,
welcher aller Anfang ist,
die Zukunft des Herren Christ.

2 Da er zu Zion einreit,
davon sie sollt haben Freud,
und jauchzen Jerusalem,
weil ihr König zu ihr käm,

3 Ein König, der gerecht ist,
und heilet der Schlangen Biß,
in armer Menschen Gestalt,
daß er sein Geschöpf erhalt.

4 Diese Zukunft macht allein,
daß wir Christen fröhlich sein,
und begehn manch Freuden fest,
allein in dem Herren Christ.

5 Wo derselb nicht kömmet hin,
da kann keine Freude sein,
ja kein recht heiliger Tag,
oder FEst je werden mag.

6 Sondern eitel Ketzerei
in des Satans Tyrannei,
Sünd und Schand, Krankheit und Noth,
Herzenleid, ewiger Tod.

7 Darvon hat uns Jesus Christ,
durch sein zukunft all erlöst.
und manch Freudenfest gemacht,
da man sein Wohlthat betracht.

8 Hosianna drum man singt,
gelobet sei der da kömmt
im Namen des Herrn zu uns,
es währt ewiglich sein Gunst.

9 Ehr sei Gott dem Vater drum,
von ihm sein Sohn zu uns kömmt,
wies der heilig Geist bezeigt,
gleich gepreist in Ewigkeit. Amen.

Ich danke dir, mein Gott, / daß du ein Mensch geboren

Here is my translation of the hymn “Ich danke dir, mein Gott, / daß du ein Mensch geboren” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Advent I, Gospel.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

I THANK Thee, O my God,
That Thou, my King and Savior,
Wast born a Man, that I
Might not be lost forever.
Now justly I rejoice
Because Thou com’st to me,
And say’st by Thine own Word:
O Zion, joyful be!

2 I thank Thee that Thou, Lord,
Hast me redeemed and savèd,
And won me righteousness,
Who wholly was depravèd.
My crown Thy entry is,
My wealth Thy poverty.
Therefore Thy flock as one
Hosanna sing to Thee.

3 Abide with me, my God,
Thy Word let guide and rule me,
Then shall no erring way
Aggrieve, deceive, or fool me,.
Come to me by Thy Word,
When throes of death increase,
Bring me through death to life,
Yea, to the City_of Peace.

4 Come for my balm and joy
When ends this world’s brief story,
When no more shall abide
Heav’n, earth, and goods, and glory;
Bring me into Thy realm,
Thy glory_and majesty,
My King, that there I may
Praise Thee eternally!

Ich danke dir, mein Gott,
daß du ein Mensch geboren,
mein König, daß ich nicht
soll ewig sein verloren,
weil du selbst kommst zu mir,
so freu ich billich mich,
weil du selbst durch dein Wort
sprichts: Zion, freue dich.

2 Ich danke dir, daß du
mein Helfer mir erworben
Heil und Gerechtigkeit,
da ich ar ganz verdorben,
dein Einzug ist mein Ehr,
dein Armuth macht mich reich,
drum Hosianna dir
dein Volk singt allzugleich.

3 Bleib ja bei mir, mein Gott,
laß mich dein Wort regieren,
so wird kein Irrweg mich
betrüben noch verführen,
komm zu mir durch dein Wort,
komm in der letzten Noth,
bring mich zur Friedensstadt
ins Leben durch den Tod.

4 Komm mir zu Trost und Freud,
wenn diese Welt vergehet,
wenn Himmel, Erde, Gut
und Ehr nicht mehr bestehet,
und führ mich in dein Reich
zu deiner Herrlichkeit,
mein König, daß ich dich
dort lob in Ewigkeit. Amen.

Nun folget mir, ihr lieben Leut

Canticle LXXVII. The Voice of the Preacher in the Wilderness,
Mark 1; Luke 3.

Mel.: Kommt her zu mir, spricht Gottes Sohn.

HARK unto me, ye souls adored!
Prepare the way for Christ the Lord,
In true repentance living!
Make straight His paths, and hold His Word
In high esteem, what ye have heard
In simple faith receiving!

2 Filled up shall every valley be,
The hills and mountains utterly
Brought low and humbled ever;
The crooked shall be soon made straight,
The rough ways be made smooth and flat
On earth by God’s good favor.

3 To thirsty souls for grace that pant
God shall His filling comfort grant,
Dispelling all their terror,
But he that builds on human works
And nature, and Christ’s merit shirks,
Shall empty lie in error.

4 The haughty heart shall be brought low,
But he that humbly here doth go
Shall find God’s grace and favor;
Then shall all mortal flesh at last
Behold with gladness unsurpassed
Christ Jesus, God our Savior.

was krumm ist soll bald werden schlecht,
das höckericht sein gleich und recht
durch Gottes Gnad auf Erden.

3 Die Gnadendürstig Seel die soll

all Furcht soll Gott weg treiben,

auf sein Natur und Werk vertraut

Mel.: Nun komm der Heiden Heiland.

JESUS Christ, be welcome now!
David’s very Heir art Thou.
All success we wish to Thee,
And await Thee longingly.

2 Blest be He that cometh down,
Claiming David’s throne and crown,
True Archshepherd of our soul,
King who makes His Isr’el whole!

3 Blest be that fair kingdom too
Of our father David true,
Which comes in the Lord’s great name,
Whom we ever high acclaim!

4 Unto Him sing out and cry
Loud Hosannas e’er on high,
Peace in heav’n eternally,
And on high let glory be!

Die Himmel, Herr, preisen sehr

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Die Himmel, Herr, preisen sehr” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm XIX, Caeli enarrant, with melody assignment “Nun komm der Heiden Heiland,” fitting it for use in Advent, especially with the two stanzas (4 and 5) borrowed from Luther’s hymn, the source of the melody. For stanza 4 I suggest my own translation hewing closer to the psalm, or Massie’s rendering as found in ELHB 1893, but for stanza 5, simply Massie’s text unaltered (later revisions seen, e.g., in TLH 1941, forsake the German sense).

Vierling (Biblia 718) writes on Psalm XIX, “It is a prophecy of the Gospel telling how it would go out into all the world as far as the heavens, and be purveyed day and night, and not only in the Jewish tongue, but in all tongues (v. 4). Just as the sun (which it introduces as a simile, v. 5) shines in every place and gives warmth all around, so shall the new law of the Gospel shine and enlighten, comfort, purify, etc., everything in all manner of teaching. And with this it takes away the old law, which was not so pure, bright, pleasant, and incomparable, etc. The Psalm pertains to the Third Commandment, for it proclaims the true sabbath in which God’s Word is to be taught and believed.”

L
OUDLY, Lord, the heav’ns acclaim
Thy celestial pow’r and name;
And the firmament the grace
Of Thy working doth express.

2 Day to day doth speak the word,
Through the night the news is heard,
To all tongues the tidings known,
Through all lands their line is gone.

3 Fair the sun ascends the earth,
Bringing all men joy and mirth:
Lo, the Father’s only Son
Cometh forth out of His throne!

*4 From the royal, spotless room [Now He leaves His royal room
Of His chamber comes the Groom, [In the holy virgin's womb,
God and Man with joy and grace [God by nature, man by birth,
As a Champion runs His race. [He now runs His course on earth.

*5 From the Father forth He came,
And returned unto the same,
Down to hell He went alone,
And again to God’s high throne.

6 Lord, Thy Word’s a flawless whole,
Comforting the troubled soul;
Sure Thy testimony sings,
Making wise all simple things.

7 Right, O Lord, Thy statutes are,
Gladd’ning hearts both near and far,
Lighting eyes with blessedness!
Fear of God shall never cease.

8 True Thy judgments are, and right,
Blameless, righteous, full of light,
More to be desired than gold,
Sweetness more than honey hold.

9 Well Thy Word instructs us, Lord,
And repays a great reward,
If as faithful servants we
In Thy fear walk faithfully.

10 Since no man, Lord, can begin
To account for all his sin,
We beseech Thee: Grace bestow,
Cover what we do not know. [or, Cleanse the faults…]

11 From all pride Thy servant keep,
Lest I to my peril leap,
Living life against Thy Word,
Suff’ring sin to be my lord.

12 Then my heart alone by grace
Shall of stain show not a trace;
By Thy grace I safe shall be,
Without all iniquity.

13 What my mouth, Lord, Thee implores,
And the sigh my heart outpours
Grant according to Thy Word,
Great Redeemer, mighty Lord!

Die Himmel, Herr, preiſen sehr
Dein göttliche Macht und Ehr,
Auch die Feſte rühmt die Gnad,
Die dein Hand gewircket hat

2  Ein Tag ſagts dem andern an,
Durch die Nacht wirds kundgethan,
Allen Sprachen wirds bekant,
Ihr Schnur geht durch alle Land.

3  Schön geht auff die liebe Sonn,
Bringet der Welt Freud und Wonn,
Gottes eingeborner Sohn,
Kommt herfür aus ſeinem Thron.

4  Er geht aus der Kammer ſein,
Dem königlichen Saal ſo rein,
Gott von Art und Menſch ein Held,
Sein Weg er zu lauffen eilt.

5  Sein Lauff kömpt vom Vater her,
Und geht wieder zum Vater,
Fehrt hinunter zu der Hell,
Und wieder zu Gottes Stuel.

6  Dein Wort HErr ist ohne Fehl,
Giebt Freud der betrübten Seel,
Deine Zeugnis fest und gwiß,
Machen klug, was alber ist.

7  Richtig HErr sind dein Gebot,
Erfreuen das Hertz in Noth,
Bringen Liecht und Seeligkeit,
Gottsfurcht bleibt in Ewigkeit.

8  Wahrhaftig sind deine Recht,
Ohne Tadel recht und schlecht,
Köstlicher denn Gold sie seyn,
Und süsser als Honigseim.

9  HErr, dein Wort uns reichlich lehrt,
Und mit großem Lohn verehrt,
So wir nun als treue Knecht,
In deiner Furcht bleiben recht.

10  Wenn niemand HErr mercken kan,
Wie offt er unrecht gethan,
Bitten wir demütiglich,
Deck zu, was wir wissen nicht.

11  Deinen Knecht für Stoltz bewar,
Daß ich nicht kom in Gefahr,
Deim Wort nicht zuwider leb,
Noch der Sünden mich ergeb.

12  So wird durch dein Güt allein
Mein Hertz stets ohn Wandel seyn,

Stehn ohn Sünd und Missethat.

13  Was von dir HErr bitt der Mund,
Geht mir recht von Hertzen Grund,
Gieb mirs ja nach deinem Wort,
Mein Erlöser und mein Hort.

Du gesegneter des Herrn

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn, “Du gesegneter des Herrn” (Benjamin Schmolck, d. 1737), in GGELB #21 with melody assignment “Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.” It appears in the author’s Das . . . andächtige Herz (1719) as a general, introductory Advent-tide hymn, with melody assignment “Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier,” with an odd heterometrical final stanza as noted under st. 6 below, which was soon “corrected” in hymnals essentially by switching around the first few lines. The original final stanza could be sung, theoretically, to the melody “Gott des Himmels und der Erden.” The same appears in Crüger’s Praxis a year earlier but with melody “Jesus meine Zuversicht.” Yet the Silesian hymn of 1728 (ed. by Schmolck?) has the “corrected” form of st. 6, as does Möllenhof’s Kern geistlicher Lieder (1731) (variants as shown in brackets).

COME, Thou Blessed of the Lord!
Wherefore wilt Thou still be waiting?
Come, Thou Jacob’s star adored,
Rise in us, our hearts elating!
Come in haste, O precious Guest,
In our hearts take up Thy rest.

2 Faith and love belong to Thee,
O Immanuel, directed;
All that we possess, may we
Leave beneath Thy feet subjected.
Thou art our own flesh and blood,
Thus our heart is well and good.

3 Still Thou com’st, and in the Word
And the Sacraments art present;
Therefore Zion joys, O Lord,
At Thine advents oft and pleasant,
And Thy daughters sing to Thee
Their Hosannas joyfully.

4 Hail, most blessed David’s Son,
Deign to take our pious kisses!
Here Thy mercy-seat is known.
Who this gracious season misses,
He Thy judgment seat shall see
And be shown hell’s agony.

5 Come in mercy still today,
Let us firmly hold and use Thee,
Let us ever watch and pray,
Nor grow cool in faith and lose Thee,
For by Thy first Advent past,
We shall gladly greet the last!

6 Then shall we lift up the head
And go forth from this our prison,
See the gate of Zion spread,
And through starry realms be risen;
There in joy we shall be found
Where Hosannas ever sound.

Komme doch, o Jackobs-Stern,

Ach schönster Jesu, mein Verlangen

Here is my translation of the St. Stephen’s Day (longing for heaven) hymn, “Ach schönster Jesu, mein Verlangen” (Anon., early 18th c.?), in ELGB #20. Fischer has no entry. I find it earliest in Seelig’s Neuvermehrtes Gesangbüchlein (Frankfurt a/M, 1720) in the appendix with only the melody “Wer nur den lieben Gott.” The Buffalo hymnal appoints it to be sung for “Stephen’s Day and otherwise,” in its “proper melody.” But no other melody is forthcoming in extant hymnals.

OH, fairest Jesus, I would greet Thee,
Oh, dearest Jesus, my delight!
When shall I come at last to meet Thee,
When in my arms enfold Thee tight?
Oh, Jesus, quickly come to me!
Thy gracious count’nance let me see!

2 Say, where shall we meet any gladness?
Here is our building all in vain,
Here is a world of woe and sadness,
Of which at last naught shall remain;
Oh, Jesus, quickly come to me!
Thy gracious count’nance let me see!

3 Whatever man on earth espieth,
Doth as the wildflow’r soon expire;
And he that on this world relieth
God’s glory scarcely shall acquire.
Oh, Jesus, quickly come to me!
Thy gracious count’nance let me see!

4 Then, Jesus, come, and do no tarry,
Release this yoke of grief and care,
To heav’nly joys our spirits carry,
Oh, with this soul thy gladness share!
Oh, Jesus, quickly come to me!
Thy gracious count’nance let me see!

Ach schönster Jesu mein Verlangen!
ach liebster Jesu meine Lust!
wenn werd ich endlich doch umfangen
mit Freuden Deine süße Brust?
Ach Jesu, laß es bald geschehen,
daß ich Dein Antlitz möge sehen.

2 Sag, was ist doch für Freud zu schauen
hier in dem Leid- und Jammerzelt;
allhier ist nur vergeblich bauen,
weil bald vergeht dies rund der Welt.
Ach Jesus laß es bald geschehen,
daß ich Dein Antlitz möge sehen!

3 Alles, was man auf Erden schauet,
vergeht, wie eine Wiesenblum
und wer auf diese Welt vertrauet,
erlanget schwerlich Gottes Ruhm.
Ach Jesu, laß es bald geschehen,
daß ich Dein Antlitz möge sehen!

4 Nun, Jesu, komm, ach komm bei Zeiten,
lös auf dies Leid- und Jammerjoch,
führ uns in Deine Himmelsfreuden,
ach, ach, erfreu die Seele doch!
Ach Jesu laß es bald geschehen,
daß ich Dein Antlitz möge sehen.

Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du vom Himmel… (und hast…)

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn, “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du vom Himmel kommen bist, und hast als ein König gerecht” (asc. Bartholomäus Helder, d.), in ELGB #19, originally in the Gotha Cantional (from at least 1646ff.) with title “for four voices, by Helder,” indicating only the melody, though in Wetzel and in the Coburg Gsb 1655, Helder is also given as author; so in later hymnals. It is to be distinguished from Martin Behm’s 14-stanza Advent hymn “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du vom Himmel kommen bist, und dich zum Menschen hast gewandt,” etc. The Buffalo Synod hymnal also ascribes it to “Barthold [sic] Helder, 1635.” But it assigns no melody. Fischer indicates “Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir.” I include also the original 4-voice setting by Helder.

WE thank Thee, Jesus, dearest Friend,
That Thou from heaven didst descend,
And as our King didst righteously
Redeem and save humanity.

2 To Salem’s gates we see Thee pass,
All meek and mild upon an ass;
The people all Hosanna sing,
And praise their God, the highest King.

3 So from us, Lord, do not depart,
But enter into every heart,
Nor let the devil, death, and sin
O’er us the slightest mast’ry win.

4 So we with songs of loud acclaim
Will everywhere extol Thy name,
Till to Jerusalem on high
To Thee and all Thy host we fly.

Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ,
Daß du vom Himmel kommen bist,
Und hast als ein König gerecht
Erlöst das ganze menschlich Gschlecht;

2. Und zu Jerusalem zeuchst ein
Sanftmütig auf ein Eselein,
Das Volk singt Hosianna schon
Und Ehr sei Gott im höchsten Thron.

3. Also wollst, Herr, auch bei uns sein,
In unsre Herzen ziehen ein,
Daß uns der Teufel, Tod und Sünd,
Mit seiner Macht nicht überwind.

4. So wollen wir mit großem Schall
Dein Namen rühmen überall,
Bis wir in Himmel gehen ein
Zu dir und deinen Engelein.

Gott Vater uns sein Sohn vorstellt

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn, “Gott Vater uns sein Sohn vorstellt” (Nicolaus Herman, d. 1561; asc. Melchior Bischof, d. 1614), in ELGB #6. Fischer has no entry for it as such. I find it in the present form in Niedling’s Geistliche Wasserquelle (1667) and Johan Hegler’s Seckendorf Gsb 1708, p. 13. Earlier, however, the first stanza appears as the 7th, final stanza of Nicolaus Herman’s hymn for Advent I (with “blood” instead of “Word”), “Da Christus wollt ein Lösegeld” in his Sontag unnd fürnembsten Feste Evangelia (1580). Stanzas 2–4 are the final prayer-stanza from his hymns for Advent II, III, and IV resp.: “Christus uns treulich warnen thut,” “Als Sankt Johann wußt daß er sollt,” “Da Sankt Johannes am Jordan.” Thus by combining the final summarizing stanzas, a useful Advent hymn of general application was created. The appointed melody is “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit.”

THE Father shows to us His Son
That we may all acclaim Him
Our great and mighty Champi-on:
So Holy Writ doth name Him.
He vict’ry gained and peace secured,
And saves us by His blessed Word.
In Him let us be trusting!

2 Upon Thine advent, Christ our Lord,
Our hope is surely founded;
That Day we all we shall be restored,
And with all joy surrounded.
Help us that we may watchful be
Until Thy angel host we see
When Thou for judgment comest.

3 Oh, Christ our Lord, Thy servants aid,
That we, by naught o’ertaken,
May stand like John who, unafraid,
By no wind-blast was shaken,
Nor dress in garments soft and gay,
But make for Thee a ready way,
The truth proclaiming freely.

4 O Jesus Christ, Thou Lamb of God,
To whom John’s finger pointed:
For us Thou bor’st the Father’s rod—
For This Thou wast anointed.
Therefore Thy church adoreth Thee,
Our Savior, who hast set us free!
Soon to Thy kingdom bring us!

Gott Vater uns sein Sohn vorstellt,

Gott, heilger Schöpfer aller Stern

Here is my translation of the hymn “Gott, heilger Schöpfer aller Stern” (Thomas Müntzer, d. 1525), ELGB #4, a revision of the hymn “Conditor alme siderum” in seven stanzas first appearing in the author’s Deutsch Evangelisch Mesße (Altstedt, 1524) for Advent. Wackernagel remarks: “A direct indication anywhere that the hymn is by T. Müntzer is unknown to me.” Included in Zwickau Enchiridion 1526, Erfurt 1527, in Low German in the Magdeburg Gsb from 1534, etc. The melody indicated in the Buffalo hymnal is “Christum wir sollen loben schon.”

GOD, holy Maker of each star,
Enlighten us, who stand afar,
That we the true Christ may confess,
Born Man for us in righteousness.

2 For so it grieved Thee heartily
That we lay in captivity,
Condemned to die forevermore;
Thy back our guilt and sorrows bore.

3 When all the world to even pressed,
The Bridegroom Christ was manifest
Out of His mother’s chamber gained;
The Virgin chaste and pure remained.

4 His mighty pow’r He then unfurled,
So that it rang through all the world,
All knees must bend and Him revere,
In heaven, hell, and also here.

5 To all that His dear hands have wrought
Life, age, and order He hath brought,
As He hath willed that they should be,
That they might own Him publicly.

6 O holy Christ, to Thee we pray,
As Thou should be our Judge one day,
Teach us Thy holy will to do,
Increase in us a faith most true.

7 Praised, Father, be, with pow’r arrayed,
With Thy dear Son, who all things made,
In substance of the Trinity
With th’ Holy Ghost: praise be to Thee.

lehr uns zwar Dein Willen thun,
und indem Glauben nehmen zu.

7 Lob, Preis sei Vater Deiner Kraft,
Deim lieben Sohn, der all Ding schafft,
im Wesen der Dreifaltigkeit,
mit dem Geist Deiner Heiligkeit.

Herr Jesu Christe, Gottes Sohn (Der du vom hohen Himmelsthron)

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn “Herr Jesu Christe, Gottes Sohn, / Der du vom hohen Himmelsthron” (David Behme, 1704), which forms the last Advent hymn in the Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #115. It is not to be confused with several other hymns sharing the first line, most notably Nicolaus Selnecker’s hymn on Psalm 73. Though it clearly dates to the 17th c., as testified by Fischer on the basis of the author’s biography corroborated by early hymnological witnesses, Mützell can furnish no text earlier than that of the Oelsnitz hymnal of 1735. There the melody is “O [or Herr] Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht,” (i.e., the melody associated with Martin Böhme’s hymn of that name), but in the Wisc. Synod hymnal, “Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir.”

LORD Jesus Christ, God’s very Son
Who from the high and heav’nly throne
Into this world didst once descend,
To be our Good, all ills to mend:

2 To Thee we humbly thanks impart
At every hour with lips and heart
That by Thine advent Thou hast brought
Eternal life to be our lot.

3 O faithful Lord, we Thee implore
Since now the end is far no more,
Us to Thy grace receive and keep
Forever as Thy faithful sheep.

4 Grant us a worthy way to wend,
And blessedly our course to end,
That we may love and worship Thee
In time and in eternity.

Liebster Jesu, sei willkommen

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn “Liebster Jesu, sei willkommen / hier in dieser bösen Welt” (Samuel Grosser, 1707) originating in the author’s Bet- und Singschule (Leipzig/Görlitz, 1707) and appearing in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #112, where the appointed melody is “Alle Menschen müssen sterben,” while Fischer indicates “Du, o schönes Weltgebäude,” which is in some places also found with the text of “Alle Menschen,” etc.

 WELCOME, dearest Jesus, deigning
In our wicked world to live,
Where all men, from Thee refraining,
Would to Thee no welcome give;
Oh, but I will not deride Thee:
Let my heart a home provide Thee!
Thou art mine and I am Thine,
Dearest Jesus, Child divine!

2 Thou com’st not with pomp surrounded,
Yet I ever am content,
Thou hast wealth and pow’r unbounded,
And to me all means hast sent
That I may be just and holy,
Though a sinner weak and lowly:
Thou art mine and I am Thine,
Dearest Jesus, Child divine!

3 Thy poor life, bereft of splendor,
Is to be my wealth always,
Thus to Thee myself I tender,
Trust in Thee alone I place,
That Thou wilt refresh me yonder
With the gifts of heav’nly wonder.
Thou art mine and I am Thine,
Dearest Jesus, Child divine!

4 Though the world receive Thee never,
Yet I will attend Thee still;
Thee and me shall nothing sever,
But forevermore I will
Cling to Thee, on Thee relying,
Thine abide alive or dying.
Thou art mine and I am Thine,
Dearest Jesus, Child divine!

5 All the shame and degradation
That this world on Thee doth cast
Are my pledge and demonstration
Proving that Thou wilt at last
Give to me the crown of glory
When I come to live before Thee.
Thou art mine and I am Thine,
Dearest Jesus, Child divine!

6 Now my heart to Thee stands open,
Come, my Savior, dwell in me;
Let me not be vainly hoping,
Suffer me Thine own to be:
Purge away all my transgression,
And I’ll make my glad confession:
Thou art mine and I am Thine,
Dearest Jesus, Child divine.

GERMAN

Liebster Jesu, sei willkommen
hier in dieser bösen Welt,
da du nicht wirst angenommen,
da man dich verächtlich hält:
ich, ich will dich nicht verscherzen,
wohne nur in meinem Herzen.
Du bist mein und ich bin dein,
allerliebstes Jesulein.

2 Zwar du kommest gar nicht prächtig,
aber ich bin schon vergnügt,
du bist dennoch reich und mächtig,
hast mir Alles zugefügt,
was mich Sünder, was mich Schwachen,
kann gerecht und selig machen.
Du bist mein und ich bin dein,
allerliebstes Jesulein.

3 Dein so armes Kummerleben
soll mein Reichtum allzeit sein,
drum bin ich dir ganz ergeben
und vertraue dir allein,
daß du dort mich werdest laben
mit den besten Himmelsgaben.
Du bist mein und ich bin dein,
allerliebstes Jesulein.

4 Will dich alle Welt gleich meiden,
dennoch find ich mich zu dir;
dich und mich soll nichtes scheiden,
sondern ich will für und für
unverrückt an dir bekleiden,
todt und lebend dein verbleiben.
Du bist mein und ich bin dein,
allerliebstes Jesulein.

5 Deine Schmach und deine Schande,
so dir diese Welt anthut,
dienet mir zum höchsten Pfande
und versichert meinem Muth,
daß du mir in jenem Leben
wirst die Ehrenkrone geben.
Du bist mein und ich bin dein,
allerliebstes Jesulein.

6 Nun, mein Herze steht dir offen,
zeuch, mein Heiland, bei mir ein;
laß mich nicht vergeblich hoffen,
laß mich nur dein eigen sein:
tilge du all mein Verbrechen,
so kann ich stets fröhlich sprechen:
Du bist mein und ich bin dein,
allerliebstes Jesulein.

Nun jauchzet, all ihr Frommen

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn “Nun jauchzet, all ihr Frommen” (Michael Schirmer, d. 1673) appearing in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #110. According to Fischer, this hymn for the First Sunday in Advent first appears in Johann Crüger’s Neues vollkömmliches Gesangbuch Augs. Conf. (Berlin, 1640) furnished with a slightly ambitious melody by Crüger himself. The melody generally appointed in more recent hymnals is the more familiar “Aus meines Herzens Grunde.” I include Crüger’s also, as well as the later simplification by König.

REJOICE, all ye God-fearing,
While time of grace abides;
Salvation now is nearing,
The Lord of Glory rides:
Though with no pompous train,
Yet mightily to scatter
And utterly to shatter
The devil’s pow’r and reign.

2 He comes to meet us mounted
Upon an ass so small,
And meekly to be counted
The sacrifice for all;
No worldly wealth He brings;
He only wills by dying
That good to be supplying
That shall outlast all things.

3 No scepter here He seeketh,
No worldly rule or crown;
The realm of which He speaketh
Is set on heaven’s throne.
His might He here conceals,
His proper glory cov’ring,
Until He, by His suff’ring,
The Father’s will fulfills.

4 Ye rulers great and mighty,
Receive this King today,
Would ye take counsel rightly
And go the proper way
Which leads to heaven’s hall,
Lest, if ye spurn Him yearly
And seek for grandeur merely,
God’s wrath upon you fall.

5 Ye wretched ones and lowly
This evil time who bear,
Who are afflicted wholly
With anguish, grief, and care:
Oh, yet undaunted be,
Your faithful anthems sounding,
The King with song surrounding,
Your highest good is He.

6 Soon will He come, unveiling
His glory on the earth,
And turn your tears and wailing
At once to joy and mirth.
He can all help convey,
So let your lamps be ready
And wait with spirit steady,
E’en now He’s on the way.

GERMAN
Nun jauchzet all, ihr Frommen,
in dieser Gnadenzeit,
weil unser Heil ist kommen,
der Herr der Herrlichkeit;
zwar ohne stolze Pracht,
doch mächtig zu verheeren
und gänzlich zu zerstören
des Teufels Reich und Macht.

2 Er kommt zu uns geritten
auf einem Eselein,
und stellt sich in die Mitten
für uns zum Opfer ein.
Er bringt kein zeitlich Gut;
er will allein erwerben
durch seinen Tod und Sterben,
was ewig währen thut.

3 Kein Scepter, keine Krone
sucht er auf dieser Welt:
im hohen Himmelsthrone
ist ihm sein Reich bestellt.
Er will hie seine Macht
und Majestät verhüllen,
bis er des Vaters Willen
im Leiden hat vollbracht.

4 Ihr großen Potentaten,
nehmt diesen König an,
wenn ihr euch wollet rathen
und gehn die rechte Bahn,
die zu dem Himmel führt.
Sonst, wo ihn hier verachtet
und nur nach Hoheit trachtet,
euch Gottes Zorn dann rührt.

5 Ihr Armen und Elenden
Zu dieser bösen Zeit,
die ihr an allen Enden
müßt haben Angst und Leid;
seid dennoch wohlgemuth!
Laßt eure Lieder klingen
und thut dem König singen;
der ist eur höchstes Gut.

6 Er wird nun bald erscheinen
in seiner Herrlichkeit,
und all eu'r Klag und Weinen,
verwandeln dann in Freud.
Er ist, der helfen kann:
halt't eure Lampen fertig
und seid stets sein gewärtig;
er ist schon auf der Bahn!

Hosianna Davids Sohn / kommt in Zion eingezogen

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn “Hosianna Davids Sohn” (B. Schmolck, 1712), which expands on the cry Hosanna of the crows at the triumphal entry to Jerusalem and thus fits it for Advent I or Palm Sunday (but the tone and emphasis is Advent I). There are other hymns with the same title which should not be confused with the present hymn. Notably, the fourth stanza of J G. Olearius’s “Komm, du werthes Lösegeld”—“Come, Thou Precious Ransome, Come” (1664) also begins with the same line, and ends similarly to the 6th stanza this hymn, which was perhaps even inspired by that stanza. The German text was included in the Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #103, as well as in a 4-stanza cento in the Selah Gesangbuch #840, where it has another translation (included here below) “Hail Hosanna! David’s Son / Enters Zion’s festive portal.” This translation by Ms. Anna Hoppe was first printed in Northwestern Lutheran on March 20, 1921 (information kindly provided by Ms. Elisabeth Urtel). It is unknown whether she translated sts. 5–7 as well (thus my stanzas may be inserted as a supplement to her translation if desired). I omit Winkworth’s translation which does not follow the meter, though some of my phrases are inspired by it. Indeed, this began as an attempt to alter her translation to fit, but it was soon apparent that too much alteration was need. The appointed melody is “Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.”

HAIL Hosanna! David’s Son
Rides to Zion, crowds adore Him.
Oh, for Him prepare a throne,
Raise a thousand arches o’er Him
Scatter palms, make plain the way
This triumphal entry day!

2 Hail Hosanna! welcome be!
Lord, we all come out to meet Thee;
Ready is our heart for Thee,
Longing to lie down beneath Thee.
Enter Thou into our gates,
Where for Thee a welcome waits.

3 Hail Hosanna! Prince of peace,
King of Glory, Champion reigning,
Toiling till Thy labors cease,
Spoils of battle for us gaining,
Still on high is Thy right hand,
And Thy rule alone shall stand.

4 Hail Hosanna! dearest Guest,
We, Thy fellows, all revere Thee,
Called to fill Thy heav’nly rest,
Oh, then let us never weary
To attend Thy royal throne;
Rule in us as King alone.

5 Hail Hosanna! hasten Thou,
Let us meetly kiss Thy meekness!
Though Thy majesty for now
Hide beneath this form of weakness,
Yet in Zion Thou art known—
Son of God and David’s Son.

6 Hail Hosanna! Lord, impart
Help to us, this grace obtaining,
That we each may bring our heart
As an off’ring without feigning;
Thou tak’st no disciple, Lord,
Who cannot obey Thy Word.

7 Hail Hosanna! Let us stay
With Thee here, Mount Olive climbing,
Till in that eternal day
Psalms to Thee we may be hymning;
Yonder is our Bethphagë:
Hail, Hosanna, Lord on high!

8 Hail Hosanna far and wide!
Enter and let naught delay Thee;
Come, no longer wait outside,
Blessed of the Lord, we pray Thee!
Hail Hosanna! Art Thou far?
Nay, Thou com’st! Alleluia!

Translation © 2022 Matthew Carver.

Anna Hoppe’s Translation:

Hail Hosanna! David’s Son
Enters Zion’s festive portal.
Come, prepare an honor-throne,
Glorify the Lord immortal,
Strew with palms His hallowed way,
To His name sweet homage pay.

2 Hail Hosanna! Come, dear Lord,
Come, Thy Zion longs to meet Thee.
All prepared through Thy blest Word,
Thy redeemed with joy now greet Thee.
At Thy feet we long to bow,
Enter, welcome Savior, now.

3 Hail Hosanna! Prince of Peace!
Mighty Hero, King victorious!
Thou didst bid the battle cease,
Thou didst grant us laurels glorious,
Justice Thy blest reign secures,
And Thy kingdom e’er endures.

4 Hail Hosanna! Precious Guest,
Thou hast chosen us forever
Members of Thy kingdom blest,
Let it be our heart’s endeavor
E’er to bow before Thy throne,
Reign in us and reign alone.

8 Hail Hosanna!  Near and far!
Haste, O Blest One!  Haste to enter!
See our welcome gates ajar!
In Thee all our hopes we center!
Hallelujah!  Thou hast come!
Sing Hosanna, Christendom!

GERMAN
Hosianna! Davids Sohn
kommt in Zion eingezogen,
ach bereitet ihm den Thron
setzt ihm tausend Ehrenbogen.
Streuet Palmen, machet Bahn,
daß er Einzug halten kann.

2 Hosianna! sei gegrüßt!
komm, wir gehen dir entgegen:
unser Herz ist schon gerüst,
will sich dir zu Füßen legen.
Zeuch zu unsern Thoren ein,
du sollst uns willkommen sein.

3 Hosianna! Friedensfürst,
Ehrenkönig, Held im Streite!
Alles, was du schaffen wirst,
das ist unsre Siegesbeute.
Deine Rechte bleibt erhöht,
und dein Reich allein besteht.

4 Hosianna! lieber Gast,
wir sind deine Reichsgenossen,
die du dir erwählet hast;
ach, so laß uns unverdrossen
deinem Scepter dienstbar sein:
herrsche du in uns allein.

5 Hosianna! komme bald,
laß uns deine Sanftmuth küssen.
wollte gleich die Knechtsgestalt
deine Majestät verschließen,
ei so kennet Zion schon
Gottes und auch Davids Sohn.

6 Hosianna! steh uns bei!
O Herr hilf, laß wohl gelingen,
daß wir ohne Heuchelei
dir das Herz zum Opfer bringen.
Du nimmst keinen Jünger an,
der dir nicht gehorchen kann.

7 Hosianna! laß uns hier
an den Ölberg dich begleiten,
bis wir einstens für und für
dir ein Psalmenlied bereiten,
dort ist unser Bethphage:
Hosianna in der Höh!

8 Hosianna nah und fern!
eile bei uns einzugehen.
Du Gesegneter des Herrn,
warum willst du draußen stehen?
Hosianna! bist du da?
Ja, du kommst, Hallelujah.

Gott Lob, ein neues Kirchenjahr

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn, “Gott Lob, ein neues Kirchenjahr” (Heinrich Cornelius Hecker, 1730), which appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #102. In view of the text, which originates in the author’s Seckendorffische Hand-Postille (Leipzig, 1730), it is most fitting for the First Sunday in Advent and especially its First Vespers. The appointed melody is “Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.”

OUR God be praised! A new church year
Arrayed with every blessing
To us once more makes bright and clear
God’s faithfulness unceasing;
Once more He will to us unfold
His cov’nant, faith’s foundation old,
By means of His good Spirit.

2 Arise, O Zion! Rise and sing
To God due praise and glory,
And as His royal priesthood bring
Your thanks, an off’ring worthy!
Blest be our consecrating God,
Who by His Word makes this abode
And Christians all His temple!

3 We merit not that love and grace
Which kindly God reneweth;
The ancient debt that plagues our race
And evermore accrueth
Removes the crown that graced mankind
And proves our old, depravèd mind
With new transgressions ever.

4 Grant us, O Lord, a spirit new,
And in Thy grace and favor,
Which yet anew Thou bring’st to view,
Our mind renew Thou ever,
That we may put the new man on,
By which alone Thy will is done
And all our life may please Thee.

5 O Lord, preserve to us Thy Word,
Thy Feast and Baptism holy:
With joy we’ll travel undeterred
This valley dark and lowly.
Church, school, and altar, yea, and font
Let not, O Lord, Thy blessings want;
In all Thy ways instruct us!

6 Thy shepherds pow’r and spirit give
For stainless life and teaching,
That all Thy flock may pure receive
God’s pasture: Word and preaching.
Let hearers also doers be
Lest any fair hypocrisy
Deny faith’s strength and power.

7 The church year thus on earth we hold,
And usher to its ending,
The next year’s end, when it grows old,
Into Thy hands commending;
Here still the church in strife remains,
But there triumphantly she reigns
In yonder life eternal.

GERMAN

Gottlob! ein neues Kirchenjahr
macht wiederum aufs neue
mit reichem Segen offenbar
des großen Gottes Treue;
von neuem will er seinen Bund,
der alten ewgen Glaubensgrund,
durch seinen Geist uns lehren.

2 Auf, Zion! Preis und Ehr und ruhm
dem höchsten Gott zu singen;
dein königliches Priesterthum
muß Dank zum Opfer bringen.
Gelobt sei Gott, der durch sein Wort
die Christenheit und diesen Ort
zu seinem Tempel weihet!

3 Wir sind nicht werth der neuen Huld
des Gottes aller Gnaden.
Des alten Menschen alte Schuld,
die wir auf uns geladen,
nimmt unsern eignen Ruhm dahin,
denn sie beweis den alten Sinn
noch stets mit neuen Sünden.

4 Ach Herr! gieb uns den neuen Geist,
daß wir durch deine Güte,
die sich an uns aufs neu erweist,
erneuert im Gemüthe
den neune Menschen ziehn an,
der dir allein gefallen kann
in seinem ganzen leben.

5 Hiezu erhalt uns, Herr, dein Wort,
sammt Tauf und Abendmahle,
so wandern mir mit Freuden fort
in diesem finstern Thale.
Herr, segne dieses Kirchenjahr,
laß Kirche, Schul, Tauf und Altar
uns deine Wege zeigen.

6 Gieb deinen Hirten Kraft und Geist
zu reiner Lehr und Leben,
dein Wort, das Gottes Weide heißt,
der Heerde rein zu geben.
Laß alle Hörer Thäler sein,
damit kein heuchlerischer Schein
des Glaubens Kraft verleugne.

7 So halten und vollenden wir
das Kirchenjahr auf Erden;
dabei befehlen wir es dir,
wie wir es enden werden.
Hier bleibt die Kirche noch im Streit,
kommt aber einst die Ewigkeit,
dann wird sie triumphieren.

Heermann on the 1st Sunday of Advent

More translation of Heermann, from the Practice of Piety.

On the First Sunday of Advent.

Rex meus es: mihi, Christe, venit Salvator ad me:
Æternum ut tecum sim, maneamque tuus.

To me Thou com’st, Lord Christ, my King, and to my good,
Thou who redeemed’st me with Thy most precious blood,
That I may come to Thee, eternally to shine
And dwell with Thee, Thy child, in soul and body Thine.

To me Thou com’st, Lord Christ, My Savior and my King,
My soul to Thee and to my heav’nly heritage to bring.

O Thou who art my King, Lord Christ, Thou com’st to me,
That I may evermore be Thine and dwell with Thee.

Christe veni, mecumque habita: me protege: vota
Audi: peccantem suscipe; tolle malum.

Come, dearest Jesus, come, within my heart to dwell:
Protect Thy subject, all distress and pain repel.
Thy royal throne is grace, and gentleness, and good.
I pray Thy grace: Oh, then, by grace grant what I would.

Come Jesus, dwell within, defend me, hear my plea,
Dispel my woes, and purge my sins most graciously.

Adventus Christi, cordi fert gaudia tristi.

O soul, rejoice! to-day is come the tide of joy,
For Christ doth come to thee and bring salvation nigh.

O freu dich, Jerusalem

Here is my translation of the Bohemian Brethren hymn, “O freu dich, Jerusalem” (J. Horn, 1544), on the Incarnation, suitable for Advent (esp. Ad Te Levavi) and Laetare, referencing both Isaiah 66 and Jeremiah 23. The tune is proper. Note that my scheme has been based on that of the German translation, which was done in couplets with a last unrhymed line, and the presumably trochaic endings of the original Bohemian lines slurred into monosyllables, so that the scheme is rigid AABBCCDDE. It seems at second glance, however, that the translation might be better served with interlocking rhymes and trochees where the melodic lines end in slurred monosyllables (A-Bn-A-Bn-Cn-Cn-A-Cn [or Dn]). I may venture that sometime in the future, since it would probably sound more natural.

O REJOICE, Jerusalem;
O Church, thy silence stem!
Praise thy God exultingly,
Who turned His wrath from thee,
And, in thy need, to prove
His unfailing love,
Sent His one begotten Son
From heaven’s lofty throne,
To this vale of tears.

2. This He did thy sin to take,
And thee from bondage break,
And, partaking of our flesh,
Salvation bring afresh,
Which never human might
Could itself set right:
Thus, lest thou be ever doomed,
Thy nature He assumed,
Stooping down so low.

3. In a servant’s humble frame
Into our world He came.
From the Father hither sent,
Thy King and Savior bent
His will most readily
To give up for thee
His own life to shameful death
That all distress and wrath
Might from thee be kept.

4. Jesus is the Seed divine,
The Branch of David’s line
Who Himself the human race
Restored by boundless grace
Of mighty majesty,
God of heav’n is He,
And the true Immanuel
Who did our souls from hell
Wondrously redeem.

5. Grace and comfort fill His name,
And are His rightful claim,
Called: The Lord our Righteousness,
Clothed in our human dress,
For us He rules and crowns
And adorns with gowns
Of His glory unalloyed
Which, heaven’s hosts, o’erjoyed,
Ever long to see.

6. Therefore Christ the Savior praise,
Sent down, our souls to raise,
And beseech Him for our sake
That here we may partake
Of His own righteousness
And the holiness
Of His conception ay:
To Christ thy Lord then pray,
Ne’er Thy Church forsake!

1. O freu dich, Jerusalem,
du christliche Gemein,
lob Gott mit fröhlicher Stimm,
daß er von dir sein Grimm
aus Lieb gewendet hat
und um deiner Not
gesandt seinen lieben Sohn
von dem himmlischen Thron
auf den Jammerthal.

2. Aufdaß er dich deiner Sünd

bring zu der Seligkeit
welch sonst kein menschlich Macht

darum nimmt er dir zugut
in so großer Demut
dein Natur an sich.

3. Sehr in niedriger Gestalt
ist er auf diese Welt
vom Vater herab gesandt,
dein König und Heiland,
der also williglich
sein Leben für dich
hie opfert bis in den Tod,
daß du aus aller Not

4. Er ist der verheißne Sam,
der Zweig von Davids Stamm,
durch den das menschlich Geschlecht,

von sehr großer Gewalt
göttlicher Gestalt,
der rechte Immanuel,
welcher uns aus der Hell,
selbst erlöset hat.

5. Sein Nam ist voll Trosts und Gnad,
denn er hat von der That
Herr, unser Gerechtigkeit

und schenkt uns solch Herrlichkeit
welch die Engel erfreut

6. Ei, lob Christum den Heiland,
vom Vater uns gesandt;
bitt ihn auf daß er uns auch

Nun laßt uns zu dieser Frist

Here is my translation of the hymn “Nun laßt uns zu dieser Frist” (M. Weisse, 1544), a Bohemian Brethren hymn for the Incarnation, suitable for Annunciation, Advent, and Christmas. Michael Weisse translated this from the Bohemian, “Všichni věrní křesťané.” It was included in the Bohemian Brethren hymnal (1544 seqq.), Frankfurt-a.-M. (1569), Wittenberg (1573), and Dresden (1589). Note the tune, Gaudeamus pariter, was also employed for the Easter hymn “Come Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain,” and has long been used by the Moravians for John Horn’s text “Join We All with One Accord.”

LET US now this time accord
To chaste meditation
On Christ Jesus, our dear Lord,
And His incarnation,
Wherein God shows grace and love,
For us in our weakness,
And came down from heav’n above,
In a form of meekness.

2. In His grace our grief He saw,
And our desolation,
For we could not keep His law
Nor work our salvation:
By the fall of Adam bound,
Cursed was our condition;
God another Adam found
To bring sin’s remission.

3. What the prophets long ago
Told of Eve’s Descendant,
God hath made us here to know,
By His good attendant:
Gabriël, who like a flame,
Swift from heaven faring,
To the Virgin Mary came
Joyful tidings bearing.

4. Said the angel, “Have no fear,
O most favored Lady:
For the Lord with thee is near,
And His throne hath made thee:
In thy womb to bear His Son,
Christ, thy Lord and Savior,
Who upon King David’s throne,
Shall be King forever.”

5. Mary said, “How shall it be
As thy words have told me?
Pure is my virginity,
Never man hath known me.”
Gabriël said, “God’s own Pow’r
Shall a mother make thee,
Yet thy maidenhead endure,
And no wise forsake thee.

6. God’s true Son that fruit shall be
From thy womb forth-springing,
Our atoning Lamb is He,
True salvation bringing,
And behold, Elizabeth
These six months is bearing:
God hath heard her pray’r of faith,
His great wonders sharing.

7. Mary said, “Behold and see,
God’s handmaiden meekest,
Be it wholly unto me,
Even as thou speakest.”
God at once a Man became,
In her body lowly,
Yet His Godhead bore no shame—
Fruit of man most holy.

8. Here the human nature mild,
Yielded to God’s pleasure.
And the Virgin was with child;
Breached, the laws of nature.
Overshadowed was she then
By God’s pow’r and action,
Yet a virgin did remain—
Wondrous, that transaction!

9. Now to us is clearly known
God’s great news of gladness,
How He made our flesh His own,
Crushed hell, death, and sadness,
Dwelt among us in our grief,
Suffered in our station,
To procure our soul’s relief,
Life, and true salvation.

10. Thank we rev’rently as one,
God our heav’nly Father,
Who in mercy sent His Son
Here to be our Brother:
Unto Thee be praise and laud,
Christ, our precious Savior,
Praise to Thee, eternal God
Be both now and ever.

1. Nu laßt uns zu dieser Frist
begehn einträchtiglich
die Menschwerdung Jesu Christ,
dadurch Gott gnädiglich
seine Lieb und Gütigkeit
reichlich erzeiget hat,
menschlicher Gebrechlichkeit
nach seim Göttlichen Rat.

2. Er sah das menschlich Geschlecht
verderbet jämmerlich,
das nach seim Göttlichen Recht
nicht kunnt erretten sich.
Denn Adams böse Begierd
macht all Menschen unrein
daß davon geholfen würd
mußt ein neu Adam sein.

3. Was vor längst verheissen war
dem menschlichen Geschlecht,
das ist worden offenbar,
da dieser Gottes Knecht
der Erzengel Gabriel
von dem himmlischen Thron,
gesandt kam zur Jungfrau schnell
mit neuer Botschaft schon.

4. Er sprach zu ihr, Biß gestrost,
du holdesliges Weib,
Gott der Herr hat an dir Lust,
du sollt in deinem Leib,
empfahn den Gottes Sohn,
in aller Reinigkeit,
derselb wird auf Davids Thron
herrschen in Ewigkeit.

5. DIe Jungfrau kunnt nicht verstehn
diesen Göttlichen Sinn:
Sie sprach, Wie soll das zugehn,
keins Manns ich schuldig bin.
Der Engel sprach, Gottes Kraft,
die wird dich umgeben,
also daß dein Jungfrauschaft
wird unversehrt bleiben.

6. Die Frucht, so aus dir entspringt,
wird heißen Gottes Sohn,
ein Lamm, welchs die Sünd wegnimmt,
das selig machen kann.
Nimm wahr, die Elisabeth
geht auch mit einem Kind;
Gott hat erhört ihr Gebet,
dem all Ding möglich sind.

7. Die Jungfrau sprach, Ey, nimm wahr,
ich bin des Herren Magd.
Mir gescheh nun ganz and gar
wie du mir hast gesagt.
Alsbald nahm Gott die Menschheit
an sich in aller Zucht,
ohn Versehrung der Gottheit
ward Mesnch ein reine Frucht.

8. Allda mußt menschlich Natur
weichen Göttlichem Will.
Denn die Jungfrau schwanger wur[d],
wider natürlich Ziel.
Dem Göttliche Macht und Kraft
umschättigt ihren Leib,
also daß ihr Junfrauschaft
rein unversehret bleib.

9. Es ist allen kundgethan,
dieses Göttlich Geschicht,
daß Gott Mensch ist worden schon
der Hell und Tod zerbricht.
In kummer und Dürftigkeit
ist er hie erschienen,
daß er uns die Seligkeit
wieder möcht verdienen.

10. Dank wir Gott mit Innigkeit
allesamt einträchtiglich,
daß er aus Barmherzigkeit
sine Sohn so gnädiglich
auf Erden gegeben hat
zu unser Seligkeit:
Lob sei dir, ewiger Gott,
nun und in Ewigkeit. Amen.

Helft mir Advent jetzt feiren

Here is my translation of “Helft mir Advent jetzt feiren” (Michael Ziegenspeck), translated by Clauder as “Adventus appropinquat…” The German first appeared in the Königsberg Hymnal (1650). The tune is “Helft mir Gotts Güte preisen.”

NOW GLAD the Advent viewing,
Dear children, raise your voice
To hail the year’s renewing,
And let us all rejoice!
For Christ His Advent kept,
When He, the Prince of Glory,
To Salem turned His story,
O’er which He once had wept.

2. Yet did that Advent sadness
That filled our Savior dear,
Fill all the world with gladness
And bring salvation near.
Our Help and Righteousness,
Of whom the prophets chanted
His Passiontide was granted,
To win us heavn’ly bliss.

3. The Advent keep with singing,
No more let Zion groan,
As all, with Salem bringing
Their shouts, their Lord to own,
Hosanna loudly cry;
“Blest be King David’s Scion,
The Lord, who comes to Zion,
Hosanna sing on high!”

4. The King of Grace yet duly
His Advent keeps aright,
And, coming, makes most truly,
Our heart His palace bright.
Through Sacrament and Word:
Lord, let Thy help attend us,
Prosperity now send us,
Forever be our Lord!

5. Soon shall that Advent meet us
When in His glorious shape
The Lord again shall greet us,
And bring our glad escape.
O Bridegroom, dear art Thou!
So come, and no more tarry!
For lo, what griefs we carry,
How deep in sorrow bow!

6. But grant us to believe Thee,
And ever ready be
With shouts, Lord, to receive Thee
When we that Advent see.
Let heart and mouth then cry,
Blest be King David’s Scion,
The Lord, who comes to Zion,
Hosanna sing on high!

GERMAN
1. Helft mir Advent jetzt feiren,
Ihr lieben Kinderlein!
Das Jahr tut sich verneuren,
laßt uns all fröhlich sein!
Advent gehlaten hat
Jesus, der Fürst der Ehren,
als er sich jetzt tät kehren
nach Salem, Davids Stadt.

2. Zwar hielt Advent armselig
diesmals der teure Held,
macht uns doch alle fröhlich,
bracht Heil der ganzen Welt.
Unsr Hilf und Grechtigkeit
nach Sage der Propheten
kam in den großen Nöten,
erwarb uns himmlisch Freud.

3. Drum halt Advent mit Schalle
samt Jungfrau Zion fein,
mit Jeruslem jauchzt alle:
Den Tag laßt unser sein!
Hosanna psallite!
Gelobt sei Davids Samen,
Der kommt ins Herren Namen,
Hosanna in der Höh!

4. Jetzt hält Advent ohn Scherze
der Gnaden-König groß,
zeucht ein in unser Herze,
machts zu seinm Freudenschloß
durch Sakrament und Wort;
drum wir mit David singen:
Hilf, Herr, laß wohl gelingen,
bleib unser Hirt und Hort.

5. Bald folgt Advent der Ehren,
da in der Herrlichkeit
der Herr wird wiederkehren,
zu holen uns zur Freud.
O edler Bräutgam wert,
Komm, komm und machs nicht lange!
Uns ist oft Angst tund bange
Allhier auf dieser Erd.

6. Verleih nur, daß wir alle
stündlichen fertig sein,
zu empfahn dich mit Schalle,
wenn du jetzt brichst herein.
Aus Herz und Mund dann geh:
Gelobt sei Davids Samen,
der kommt ins Herren Namen,
Hosanna in der Höh!

Amen.
