Ach Gott, ich soll die Rechenschaft

Here is my translation of the hymn “Ach Gott, ich soll die Rechenschaft” (E. Neumeister, 1702), appointed in Der Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl for Trinity IX.

Mel.: Aus tiefer Noth schrei ich zu dir.
 

O GOD, I must a full account
Of all at last be giving!
I have accrued a great amount
Of debts in all my living.
Before Thy judgment’s strict demand
I never can endure or stand
But must forever perish.

2 I know no other way or path
To flee this devastation,
Than that alone which Jesus hath
Made for my consolation.
I bring His merit here to Thee,
He will thereby repay for me
In full the debt outstanding.

3 Oh, therefore let His precious blood
In faith be freely flowing,
One drop of which is more than good
To cancel all that’s owing.
Clear Thou my debt and say to me,
Take heart, the debt and penalty
I have to thee remitted!

4 Rejoice, my soul, I have with God
Reconciled forever!
God, who in Jesus, by His blood,
Crowns me with love and favor,
Will also, when life’s course is o’er,
Receive me there forevermore
In dwellings everlasting.

Ach Gott, ich soll die Rechenschaft
von allen Dingen geben.
Ich bin mit großer Schuld behaft
in meinem ganzen Leben.
Wenn du willt ins Gerichte gehn,
so kann ich nimmermehr bestehn,
und ist mit mir verloren.

2 Ich weiß mir keinen andern Rath
in dieser Angst zu fassen,
als den mir JEsus Christus hat
zum Troste hinterlassen.
Ich bringe sein Verdienst vor dich.
Er selber will damit für mich
dei ganze Schuld bezahlen.

3 So laß dir, Gott, sein theures Blut
im Glauben überreichen.
Ein einzger Tropfen ist schon gut,
die Rechnung auszustreichen.
Quittiere mich, und sprich zu mir:
Sei nur getrost, ich habe dir
die Schuld und Straf erlassen.

4 O meine Seele, freue dich,
ich bin mit Gott versöhnet!
Gott, der in Christo Jesu mich
mit Huld und Gnade krönet,
der nimmt auch nach vollbrachtem Lauf
mich in die ewgen Hütten auf,
allda bei ihm zu wohnen.
