Hütet euch, ihr fromme Herzen

 Here is my translation of the hymn “Hütet euch, ihr fromme Herzen” (L. Laurentii, 1700), from the author’s Evangelia Melodica as the first hymn for Trinity VIII.

Mel.: Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele.

SAINTS, beware! beware! lest ever
Ye false doctrines should receive.
Gravely warns the Lord and Savior
No such shepherds to believe
Who from truth would turn your eyes
To behold their cheating lies;
Watch, lest ye should fall to erring
By those prophets falsehood stirring.

2 Those who come, a sheepskin wearing,
But are rav’ning wolves within,
With a show of light appearing,
Yet with hearts obscured by sin—
They are shepherds insincere,
As the Lord portrays them here;
Shining prophets, lies who utter,
Seeking but the sheep to slaughter.

3 Since they seem without to glisten,
As a shepherd good and fair,
Prophets to whom one ought listen,
How shall mortal mark them e’er
As false teachers so attest?
Jesus counsel is the best:
Though men prophet’s honor show them,
By their fruits we are to know them.

4 First, the fruit let be examined
Of their teaching, false or true:
Second, let it be determined
If the teachers live as due.
Teach they falsely, worldly live?
These a fair conclusion give,
And the fruit is indication,
Of the prophet’s inclination.

5 Soon the sheep in faith discerning,
Hears the voice and knoweth well
If a prophet comes o’erturning
Satan’s kingdom, sin, and hell,
And his words to faith relate,
Since love shows the inward state.
If the Lord be there abiding,
faith and love cannot be hiding.

6 He with might will all endeavor,
Satan’s kingdom to o’erthrow,
And the bonds of sin to sever
By the staves of grace and woe;
Will admonish, warn, and pray,
Those who still in error stray,
Shunning all dissembling ever,
That he may their souls deliver.

7 Lord, teach us to know most clearly
Shepherds false by fruit and deed,
(Though men call them fathers dearly),
To Thy counsel to give heed,
And to know them by their fruit—
’Tis the guide in truth’s pursuit:
Life and doctrine chaste will give us
Signals that may not deceive us.

8 Ne’er in truth are figs collected
From the branches of the thorn,
Nor are grapes at all detected
On the weedy thistle borne.
As that fruit doth follow not,
Likewise Jesus truly taught:
They false shepherds must be namèd,
Who are by their fruit proclaimèd.

GERMAN

Hütet euch, ihr fromme Herzen,
hütet euch vor falscher Lehr;
Jesus warnet sonder Scherzen,
gebt den Hirten kein Gehör,
die euch von der Wahrheit Sinn
führen zu der Lügen hin;
wacht, und laßt euch nicht betriegen
von Propheten, welche lügen.

2 Die in Schafes Kleidern kommen,
und inwendig Wölfe sind,
die den Lichtschein angenommen,
aber doch im Herzen blind,
die sind falscher Hirtenart,
wie sie Jesus offenbart,
solche gleissende Propheten
wollen nur die Schafe töten.

3 Weil sie denn von außen gleißen
wie ein Schafhirt gut und schön,
auch sogar Propheten heißen,
ei wobei soll man denn sehn,
daß sie falsch sind in der That,
Jesus gibt den besten Rath,
daß, die sich Propheten nennen,
man soll an den Früchten kennen.

4 Erstlich an der Lehre Früchten,
ob sie falsch sei oder wahr,
dann auch an den Lebenspflichten,
wird ein Lehrer offenbar
Lehrt er falsch und lebt der Welt,
so wird hier der Schluß gefäqllt,
daß die Frucht des Baumes zeiget,
wozu der Prophet geneiget.

5 Ach ein Schäflein kann bald hören,
an der Stimm, ob ein Prophet
komme Satans Reich zu stören,
ob die Lehr zum Glauben geht,
da die Liebe zeuget bald,
von der inneren Gestalt,
wohnet Gott in seiner Seelen,
so kann Glaub und Lieb nicht fehlen.

6 Er wird sich mit Macht bemühen,
Satans Reich zu brechen ab,
und von Sünden abzuziehen,
durch den Sanft- und Wehe-Stab,
die noch in der Irre gehn,
mit vermahnen, warnen, flehn,
und das sonder Heuchelwesen,
daß die Seelen nur genesen.

7 Ach Herr Jesu, lehr uns kennen,
falsche Hirten an der That,
ob sie sich gleich Väter nennen,
laß uns folgen deinem Rath,
und sie kennen an der Frucht,
Lehr und Leben in der Zucht,
kann auch uns in Lehr und Leben
ein gewisses Merkmal geben.

8 Man wird wahrlich keine Feigen
lesen von dem Dornenstrauch,
auch wird keine Trauben zeigen
eine Distel die nicht taug.
Folgen denn die Früchte nicht,
so ist wahr, was Jesus spricht,
daß die Hirten falsch zu nennen,
weil sie an der Frucht zu kennen.

Falscher Lehr und Heuchelleben

 Here is my translation of the hymn “Falscher Lehr und Heuchelleben” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Trinity VIII (Gospel), where he suggests the tune “Werde munter mein Gemüthe” with the note “The last melody is repeated.” This is another instance of a devotional rhyme being adapted to hymnody. Since this proved unsatisfactory in later hymnals where it was taken up, a proper tune was eventually published by Bronner in 1715, which I give here from Zahn.

Mel.: Falscher Lehr und Heuchelleben.

N
OW to lives and doctrines lying
All the world as one is flying;
Everywhere the eye is turnèd,
God’s acclaim is shamed and spurnèd!
Faithful God, Thou wilt, awaking,
Thine own cause in hand be taking;
Thou Thy foes in fear wilt scatter,
Who with sheepskins cheat and flatter;
Persecutors Thou wilt chasten,
And to save Thy sheep wilt hasten!

2 Let the wolf not tear nor take them;
Thou canst dash his teeth and break them;
Give us faithful teachers ever,
Spread Thy kingdom’s high endeavor,
Give to every land and station
Thy pure Word and revelation;
Let us bring forth fruit most precious,
Proving by our actions gracious
This our faith, and so adore Thee
Here on earth and there in glory!

Falscher Lehr und Heuchelleben
ist die ganze Welt ergeben,
wo man sich nur jetzt hinwendet,
da wird Gottes Ehr geschändet.
Treuer Gott! du wirst aufwachen,
und ausführen deine Sachen,
du wirst deine Feinde schrecken,
die sich mit dem Schafspelz decken,
die Verfolger wirst du strafen,
und selbst helfen deinen Schafen.

2 Laß sie nicht den Wolf zerreißen,
du kannst seine Zähn zerschmeißen,
gieb uns allzeit treue Lehrer,
sei du deines Reichs Vermehrer,
gieb dein Wort in allem Lande,
rein und lauter allem Stande,
laß uns edle Früchte tragen,
was wir gläuben, was wir sagen,
allzeit in der That beweisen,
daß wir hier und dort dich preisen.

Die Welt ist falsch, Getreuer Gott

Here is my translation of the hymn “Die Welt ist falsch, Getreuer Gott” (B. Schmolck, 1712), from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath, part 1, for Trinity VIII, with title “The Nature of Doves and Serpents.”

Mel.: Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit

THE world is false, O faithful God,
With prophets vast in number
Who mock true doctrine by their fraud
And souls to death encumber.
Here, poison of deceit is brewed,
There, Scripture is with teachings crude
And lies of men corrupted.

2 Now all too oft we sheepskin find,
The faults of men concealing;
In holy dress of angel-kind
False teachers come appealing,
Of heaven preaching near and far,
And yet, alas, the gate unbar
That to damnation leadeth.

3 When they a simple soul have caught,
The wolf his claws then showeth;
The sheep is snared and soon is brought
From grass that life bestoweth
And to those meadows made to go,
Where pois’nous herbs and mildew grow,
And perisheth forever.

4 O Christ, equip my mind and sense
With holy wisdom’s armor,
To make for truth a bold defense
Against the guiling charmer;
And where the wolves in sheepskin go,
Grant that I may them rightly know,
Their evil fruit perceiving.

5 No grape appears upon the thorn,
No fig the thistle giveth;
The tree corrupted and forlorn
No goodly fruit conceiveth,
False teachers’ vile iniquities—
These are the fruit of rotten trees,
Fit only for the furnace.

6 Where’er the Lord’s Word is despised
And rules of men maintainèd;
Where selfish glory most is prized,
And Jesus’ blood profanèd;
Where men with grace’s treasures jest
And souls from their salvation wrest–
’Tis there such fruit aboundeth.

7 Oh, let my touchstone be Thy Word,
All things thereto comparing,
And earnestly forsake the herd
Of wolves with murd’rous bearing;
Give to Thy church help from above,
That it may not be as a dove
Torn by this beast to pieces.

8 New sects and spirits rise each day
And, striving, bring disaster;
Oh, then preserve and guard my way,
My Leader and my Master,
That I may keep that course aright
That gives me utter truth and light
Through Thy dear Spirit’s teaching.

9 Let me avoid all outward show,
The Christian heart defiling;
Lest, Christian named, I be not so,
Nor wear the sheepskin guiling!
Whoever saith Lord, Lord! alone,
And yet Thy will it never done—
He bringeth forth fruit rotten.

10 There is prepared a fiery pit
Where worthless trees are burnèd,
And Thou wilt from the hypocrite,
Upon that Day be turnèd.
Then grant that all hypocrisy
May banished be far, far from me,
And let me turn back never!

GERMAN
Die Welt ist falsch, Getreuer Gott,
Sie stecket voll Propheten,
Die durch der wahren Lehre spott
Die seelen wollen tödten:
Da kochet man Verführungs Gifft,
Und dort verkehrt man deine schrifft
Mit Menschentand und Lehren.

2 Das Schaffskleid wird itzt sehr gemein,
Man schmincket seine Mängel,
Die falschen Lehrer gehn herein
In Heiligkeit der Engel,
sie wenden lauter Himmel vor,
Und öffnen leider! doch das Thor
Zum Abgrund in die Hölle.

3 Wenn sie die Einfalt nun berückt,
Da zeigt der Wolff die Klauen,
Das arme Schaf, das er bestrickt,
Verliehrt die Lebens-Auen,
Indem es solche Weide kriegt,
Worauf nur Gift und Mehlthau liegt,
Davon es ewig stirbet.

4 O Jesu, wapne meinen Sinn,
Mit Klugheit der Gerechten,
Daß ich geschickt und freudig bin
Die Warheit zu verfechten;
Und hat der Wolf ein Schafskleid an,
So gib, daß ich ihn kennen kan
An seinen bösen Früchten.

5 Die Trauben trägt kein Dornenstrauch,
Die Distel keine Feigen,
Man kan von faulen Bäumen auch
Nicht gutte Früchte zeigen:
Der falschen Lehrer böse Zucht
Ist eines faulen Baumes Frucht,
Der in die Gluth gehöret.

6 Wo man des Herren Wort veracht,
Und Menschensatzung lehret;
Wo man nach eigner Ehre tracht,
Und CHristi Blutt entehret;
Wo man mit Gnadenschätzen spielt,
Das Heil der armen Seelen stielt,
Da, da sind solche Früchte.

7 Ach laß mich alles an dein Wort,
Als den Probierstein streichen,
Und dieser Wölfe Seelenmord
Mit allem Ernst entweichen.
Steh deiner gantzen Kirchen bei,
Daß sie nicht eine Taube sei,
Die dieses Thier zerreisset.

8 Stehn immer neue Secten auf,
Und neue Rottengeister;
Ach so bewahre meinen Lauf,
Mein Führer und mein Meister.
Daß mir kein ander Weg beliebt,
Als der mir Licht uñ Warheit giebt,
Durch deines Geistes Lehre.

9 Laß mich auch selbst den falschen Schein
Im Christenthume meiden:
Ein Christe heißen und nicht sein,
Heist, sich ins Schaf verkleiden.
Wer nur Herr! Herr! alleine spricht,
Und thut doch deinen Willen nicht,
Der träget faule Früchte.

10 Ach dort ist Feuer zugericht,
Wo faule Bäume brennen,
Und du willst keinen Heuchler nicht
An jenem Tage kennen.
Drumb gieb, daß alle Heuchelei
Sehr weit von mir verbannet sei,
So darf ich nicht entweichen.

Plag über Plag ist falsche Lehr

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Plag über Plag ist falsche Lehr” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne Geistliche Lieder under Trinity VIII, with title “Of the harm of lying, and benefit of divine truth.”

Mel.: Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ.

FALSE doctrine is of plagues the worst,
Wherefore God gives us warning,
Above all things to dread that first,
Nor be it lightly scorning.
Yea, though this world is sorely vexed,
And one cross follows on the next,
New troubles bringing every day,
As Christ doth say,
’Tis strange that this is cast away!

2 So clearly hath He naught portrayed
As prophets false and guiling,
Who, with their doctrines sheeplike made
Rage wolflike, all defiling;
They keep men from salvation free
To perish for eternity,
With soul and body damned to hell,
Naught harms so well;
No man can all its evils tell.

3 The loss of body, name, and goods
Cannot in life affright us;
No ruin wrought by fires or floods,
No enemies that fight us
Can harm us for eternity!
Though to the Turk we captive be,
Yea, though of life he us bereave,
We need not grieve,
If rightly we in God believe!

4 Therefore the joy that fills my heart
No earthly ills can smother,
Which swiftly come and soon depart,
One foll’wing on the other,
For want and sickness have their end.
The foe shall not my soul offend,
If I may but Thy Word of grace
Still pure embrace!
Lord Christ, To thee be endless praise!

GERMAN

Plag über Plag ist falsche Lehr,
Gott uns dafür thut warnen:
Nichts sollen wir fürchten so sehr,
wieviel auch ist des Argen,
in dieser armseligen Welt,
ein Kreuz das ander überfällt,
ein jeder Tag hat seine Plag,
nach Christus Sag;
Wunder, daß mans verachten mag.

2 Nichts mahlt er uns so deutlich für
als die falschen Propheten,
die mit der Schaffverbremten Lehr
wölfischer Weise wüten;
sie hindern an der Seligkeit,
daß man verderb in Ewigkeit,
mit Leib und Seel verdammt zur Hell,
nichts schadt so viel,
kanns jemand, alles Unglück zähl.

3 Was Leib, was Gut, was Ehr belangt,
in dem zeitlichen Leben,
kein Wasserflut, kein Feuers Brand,
kein feindlich Widerstreben

voller Genad,
Herr Christ, dir ewig Lob ich sag.
Amen.
