Heilig sei uns diese Stätte

Here is my translation of the cemetery dedication hymn, “Heilig sei uns diese Stätte” (Albert Knapp, d. 1864), in GGELB # with melody assignment “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme” and omitting stanzas 3–4. The full form is found in the author’s Evangelischer Liederschatz (1837) #3436, (1865) #2926, (1891) #2950. A variant cento with a compression of stanzas 3–4 and Rationalistic substitutions is found in Hektor Zollikofer’s Palmen und Cypressen (St. Gall, 1862, 2nd ed.) (variants marked in brackets below). The Ohio hymnal omits stanzas 3–4 likely because of length as well as the negative expressions considered awkward to the solemnity of the dedication rite.

LET this place to us be holy,
A bed for mortal slumber solely,
Where Christ some day shall bid us rest!
Let it now God's name inherit
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
As with a sacred seal impressed.
While here God’s seed may sleep,
The Morning-star shall keep
Constant vigil,
Till after night
In glorious light
The Day eternal comes to sight.

2 Then this realm shall be surrounded,
A mighty blast that ne’er was sounded
The heav’nly trumpet then shall make;
Hark, a thunder then shall rumble
And death and nature, dreading, crumble,
Before the cry: “Ye dead, awake!”
Then all will stand to life,
Child, parent, man, and wife.
Then, Jehovah,
Grant grace’s prize
Far o’er the skies!
Let us to life eternal rise!

*3 Here will goats with sheep be buried,
The wicked with Light’s sons interrèd,
With saints shall liars here be deckedr;
All their dust will mingle surely,
Yet God upon some morning early
Will wipe the tears of His elect.
At Resurrection’s call,
A mighty stroke shall fall,
All dividing,
Hell take as his
What of flesh is,
And blessed spirits fly to bliss.

*4 Come, O mortal congregation!
Embrace the Friend of Thy salvation,
To Christ, the only Savior, cleave.
He, whose eye like fire is flaming,
Has pow’r of loosing and condemning,
As after time ye shall receive.
Hail to His servants true!
Their tomb shall spring into
Life eternal!
Woe to His foe,
For he shall go
Where justice shall no mercy know.

5 Thou alone, O Man of sorrow,
Dost hold the key, that on that Morrow
Will open not to death, but Thee.
Teach us Thee to trust whole-hearted,
That, having on Thy wounds departed,
We may arise, the Dawn to see!
In grace, creation’s Lord,
Appoint this hallowed sward
That those bodies
Which pale we lay
In death’s grim sway,
May glorious shine like Thee that Day!

GERMAN
Heilig sei uns diese Stätte,
dies große, tiefe Totenbette, [große, weite]
wo Christus einst uns schlafen legt! [wo Kind und Greis sich…]
Heilig sei es! Amen, Amen!
Ins Vaters Sohns und Geistes Namen
bleib ihm dies Siegel aufgeprägt! [bleib ihm…]
Hier ruht die Saat des Herrn; [*]
der helle Morgenstern
steht darüber,
bis nach der Nacht
in Gottespracht
der Tag der Ewigkeit erwacht.

2 Dann wird dies Gefilde kreisen,
dann hoch ausgehn in neuen Weisen […mit Seraphsweisen]
der himmlische Posaunenhall;
brausend wird der Donner gehen;
Natur und Tod wird zitternd stehen,
wanns ruft: “Erwacht, ihr Toten all!”
Aufstehen alle dann,
Kind, Eltern, Weib und Mann.
O Jehovah [O Allheilger!]
in deinen Höhn,
laß Gnad ergehn!
Laß uns zum Leben auferstehn!

*3 Böcke legt man hier zu Schafen, [Griese legt man hin zu Kindern]
Lichtskinder zu den Teufelsklaven, […verstockten Sündern]
zu Heilgen Lügner in das Grab;
Staub wird hier mit Staub vermischet;
doch seinen Auserwählten wischet
Gott frühe dort die Thränen ab.
Am Auferstehungstag
wird dann ein Donnershclag
alles schieden:
die Höll hinreißt,
was fleischlich heißt;
gen Himmel fährt der Selgen Geist.

*4 Glaub es, sterbliche Gemeinde!
Nimm Jesum heute dir zum Freunde,
in dem allein dei Seligkeit!
Er, des Aug wie Feuerflammen,
er kann erlösen un verdammen,
wie er uns findet nach der Zeit.
Heil dem, der ihm gedient!
Aus dessen Grabe grünt
Ewges Leben.

Mach in Gnaden,
was hier geht bleich
zum Totenreich,
dort deinem Sonnenleibe gleich!

O Herr, vor dem sich Erd und Himmel beuget

Here is my translation of the church dedication hymn, “O Herr, vor dem sich Erd und Himmel beuget” (Albert Knapp, d. 1864), in GGELB #144 with melody assignment “Herzliebster Jesu, was hast du verbrochen” and note: “From the Latin, 3rd c. AD or earlier.” Meant is the Latin hymn for church dedication, “Christe cunctorum Dominator alme,” composed probably in the 9th c. AD. This German paraphrase appears in Knapp’s Evangelischer Liederschatz (1837ff.), thence into various hymnals, e.g., Lübeck 1839, Schaffhausen 1867 (Ref.), Saxony 1883. Knapp’s stanza 1 includes ideas from Latin st. 1–2; other ideas of Latin st. 2 are also included in German st. 8. Stanza 4 combines Latin 5–6, the latter exorcised of devils, however. Stanza 6 combines ideas of Latin sts. 8–9. Common today in Anglophone countries is an abbreviated form of “Only-Begotten Son of God eternal,” a non-rhyming translation from the Latin by M. J. Blacker.

O LORD, adored by earth and heav’n supernal,
God’s Son, begotten ere all worlds eternal,
Graciously hear our grateful adoration
And supplication. (1–2)

2 Lord, to Thy service is this house appointed:
Here do Thine own, with Spirit’s joy anointed,
Eat of the Blood and Body that Thou gavest,
By which Thou savest. (3)

3 Here in Thy holy fount are debts erasèd,
Here all the damage of the soul effacèd,
Here babes to Thee, who death hast subjugated,
Are consecrated. (4)

4 Here wilt Thou heal the sick, the weary quicken,
Lighten the blind, give peace to those sin-stricken.
Here shall the heart stung by abundant sorrow
Fresh courage borrow. (5–6)

5 Here is the forecourt of the Lord immortal,
Here is His Holy Place, and heaven’s portal,
Which open stands to all who seek the Savior
And life forever. (7)

6 Though in the tempest all things else be flying,
Still stands the church, a rock the storm defying,
In Jesus’ shelter, hell’s  disdaining,
Safely remaining. (8–9)

7 Therefore rejoice we at this consecration,
Praying: Dear Lord, receive our supplication,
And on this church bestow in gracious favor
Thy blessing ever. (10)

8 Let nothing rob the joy of hearts elated,
Let this glad day be often celebrated,
Feed, Lord, Thy people oft the gives of heaven
Which here are given. (11)

9 Glory to Thee, O Father, be forever,
To Thee, God’s Son, to Thee, sweet Comfort-giver!
For endless ages, teach us, who confess Thee,
Further to bless Thee. (12)

GERMAN

O Herr, vor dem sich Erd und Himmel beuget,
du, Gottes Sohn, von Ewigkeit gezeuget,
blick auf der Deinen Flehn und Dankeslieder
huldreich hernieder!

2 Dies Haus, o Herr, ist deinem Dienst geweihet;
Hier schmecken deine Gläubgen hocherfreuet
das Blut, den Leib, den du zu unserm Leben
dahingegeben.

3 Hier wird in deinem hellgen Wasserbade
die Schuld getilgt, geheilt der Seelenschade;
hier weihen wir, o Todesüberwinder,
dir unsre Kinder.

4 Hier finden Kranke Heilung, Kraft die Müden,
die Blinden Licht, die Sünder Seelenfrieden;
hier athmen freier bei des Lebens Schmerzen
die wunden Herzen.

5 Des Ewgen Vorhof ist an diesem Orte,
das Heiligthum des Herrn, des Himmels Pforte,
stets offen allen, die dem ewgen Leben
entgegenstreben.

6 Mag bei der Stürme Wüthen alles zittern,
die Kirche steht, ein Fels in Ungewittern,
und bleibet bei der Hölle wildstem Trutze
in Christi Schutze.

7 Drum freun wir uns der heilgen Tempelweihe,
und bitten: Herrz, Allgütiger, verleihe,
daß uns geleite dein mildreicher Segen
auf allen Wegen!

8 Nichts raube uns des Herzens fromme Freude;

dein Lob ausbreiten!

LATIN (from Daniel, for reference)
1 Christe cunctorum Dominator alme,
Patris aeterni genitus ab ore,
Supplicum vota pariterque hymnum
Cerne benignus.

2 Cerne, quod puro Deus in honore
Plebs tua supplex resonet in aula
Annua cuius redeunt colenda
Tempora festa.

3 Haec domus rite tibi dedicata
Noscitur, in qua populus sacratum
Corpus assumit, bibit et beati
Sanguinis haustum.

4 Hic sacrosancti latices veternas
Diluunt culpas, perimuntque noxas
Chrismate vero genus ut creetur
Christicolarum.

5 Hic salus aegris, medicina fessis,
Lumen orbatis, veniaque nostris
Fertur offensis, timor adque moeror
Pellitur omnis.

6 Daemonis saeva perit hic rapina,
Pervicax monstrum pavet et retenta
Corpora linquens fugit in remotas
Ocyus umbras.

7 Hic locus nempe vocitatur aula
Regis immensi, vineaque caeli
Vitae quae sanctos patriam petentes
Accipit omnes.

8 Turbo quem nullus quatit, aut vagantes
Diruunt venti penetrantque nimbi;
Non tetris laedit piceus tenebris
Tartarus horrens.

9 Quaesumus ergo Deus ut sereno
Annuas vultu, famulos gubernans,
Qui tui summo celebrant amore
Gaudia templi.

10 Nulla nos vitae crucient molestas:
Sint dies laeti placidaeque noctes:
Nullus ex nobis pereunte mundo
Sentiat ignes.

11 Haec dies in qua tibi consecratam
Conspicis aram, tribuat perenne
Gaudium nobis, vigeatque longo
Tempore usu.

12 Gloriam summum resonet Parentem;
Gloria Natum, pariterque sanctum
Spiritum dulci moduletur hymno
Omne per aevum. Amen.

Heut lobe Gott, du Christen-Chor

Here is my translation of the church consecration hymn, “Heut lobe Gott, du Christen-Chor!” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #130 with melody assignment “Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.” The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) has an English adaptation in 7 stanzas of Common Meter, with the title “For the consecrating of a Church.” (See below.)

O CHRISTIAN choir, thy God adore
With heart and mind rejoicing,
And enter at His Temple door,
Praise for His goodness voicing;
Remember now His bounteous grace
That He hath builded in this place
A house for His due glory!

2 Let every soul as due draw near
With song and supplication;
And God will surely make it clear
To our great jubilation
That He will dwell among us here,
His temple’s glory, light, and cheer,
His flock’s beloved Shepherd.

3 He feeds us with His mighty Word,
To meadows green doth guide us;
He is our Shield and Rock assured
Lest any harm betide us.
Who trust God’s mercy, surely find
His pow’r renews their soul and mind
And makes them His own children.

4 The Lord hath brought us hitherto,
And brings us on to heaven;
Let us but fight the warfare true,
So shall success be given.
In hope and faith we pray that He
Will cause true Christianity
Within our church to flourish.

5 O Jesus, pass Thy knowledge down
To every generation.
Thy Word with might and vigor crown
For sinful man’s salvation;
Let wand’ring shop be called again,
Be wakened from their sleep of sin,
And to Thy flock be gathered.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
We praise the Lord, whose love is great;
His mercies we embrace;
We enter now, His temple gate,
And thank him for his grace.

2 This house for sacred use design'd,
We dedicate to God;
Here may the Lord of glory find,
A dwelling and abode.

3 Here we approach thy sacred courts,
With reverence and fear;
We will engage our best efforts,
To worship Thee with pray'r.

4 Lord, may this be Thy sanctuary,
Here with Thy Spirit dwell:
To us and or posterity,
The way to heav'n reveal.

5 Here Savior, show Thy Gospel light,
And send Thy blessings down;
Bring thy life-giving Word to sight,
And make salvation known.

6 Here let Thy blessed Word be taught,
To us, and to our youth;
May thousands to that light be brought,
Where in they learn the truth.

7 Here let us hear the Gospel sound,
Attend Thy Word with grace;
Call many wand’ring sinners round,
To come and fill this place.

GERMAN
Heut lobe Gott, du Christenchor
mit freudigem Gemüthe,
geht ein durch seines Tempels Thor
und preiset seine Güte;
gedenket seiner großen Gnad,
das er sich hier errichtet hat,
ein Haus zu seiner Ehre.

2 Ein jeder komm nach seiner Pflicht,
mit Singen, Beten, Flehen;
vergesset solches nimmer nicht,
so wird man freudig sehen,
daß er wird selber wohnen hier
und sein des Tempels Licht und Zier,
und Hirte seiner Heerde.

3 Er weidet uns mit seinem Wort,
führt uns auf grünen Auen;
er ist das Leben, Schild und Hort,
die seiner Güte trauen,
erfahren, daß die göttlich Kraft,
sie ganz zu neuen Menschen macht,
und Gottes Kinder werden.

4 Bisher hat uns der Herr gebracht,
er wird uns weiter bringen;
wir üben gute Ritterschaft,
es wird uns auch gelingen;
wir hoffen, glauben, bitten drum,
der Herr wird wahres Christenthum
in unstre Kirche schaffen.

5 Hier, Jesu, pflanz Erkenntnis fort,
auf Kind und Kindes Kinder,
gib Kraft und Nachdruck deinem Wort,
beleb die todte Sünder;
laß rufen die verlorne Schaf,
erweck sie von dem Sündenschlaf,
bring sie zu deiner Heerde.

Zions Burg ist meine Freude

Here is my translation of the Sunday hymn, “Zions Burg ist meine Freude” (Gottfried Meißner, d. 1690), from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #330. (Anna Hoppe’s translation for Northwestern Lutheran 1926 is included below.) Fischer omits it from the list of the Meißner’s works. The earliest instance available to the translator is Johann Crüger’s Praxis, 1708 ed., without ascription. “G. (or Georg, or Gottfried) Meißner” appears in slightly later books, e.g., Wagner’s Pomeranian hymnal of 1735, and Bollhagen’s Heiliges Lippen- und Herzens-Opffer (Stettin, 1789). More recently, in Kirchl. Zeitschr. 4 (1878), p. 174, it is designated for the congregational hymn upon entering the church at a Dedication of a new church. The appointed melody is “Zion klagt mit Angst und Schmerzen.”

ZION’S mountain is my pleasure,
My delight, God’s city fair,
Pasture fresh in ample measure,
Balm of souls beyond compare!
Here, therefore, I take my place,
To behold its beauteous grace,
And to praise my Rock and Tower
For His wonders, might, and power.

2 Now, my God, let supplication,
Teaching, hearing, hymnody—
Every sacred operation—
Solely for Thy glory be!
And, as in Thy house I go
Here on earth, this too bestow:
That I may go hence to glory,
And with joy abide before Thee.

HOPPE:

Zion’s Fortress is my Treasure, -
Glorious City of my God!
Here my soul finds endless pleasure,
Pastures green adorn its sod!
When I view its splendor bright,
And behold God’s power and might,
My heart thrills with pure elation
At the wonders of salvation.

Sweetest praises to Thee bringing,
Zion lauds Thee, O Most High!
Teaching, hearing, praying, singing
Thy blest Courts do sanctify.
To and from Thy House I go;
If such joy I here may know,
With what bliss shall I adore Thee
When in Heav’n I stand before Thee?

GERMAN

Zions Burg ist meine Freude,
mein Lust ist Gottes Stadt,
in derselben find ich Weide
und für meine Seele Rath;
drum erscheine ich allhier
anzuschauen seine Zier,
und zu preisen Gottes Werke,
seine Wunder, Macht und Stärke.

2 Nun, mein Gott! laß Beten, Singen,
Lehren, Hören und was mehr,
nur zu deinem Lob erklingen;
doch auch dieses mir gewähr,
daß, wie ich in deinem Haus
jetzo gehe ein und aus,
also ich auch dort mög gehen,
und mit Freuden vor dir stehen.

Kommt her ihr Christen voller Freud

Here is my translation of the Dedication Festival hymn “Kommt her, ihr Christen, voller Freud” (Johann Christoph Arnschwanger, d. 1696), as it appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #265. Fischer finds it first in the author’s Neue geistliche Lieder (Nuremberg, 1659), with the title “On the Church Dedication, in which God is thanked for preserving His church and besought for further dissemination of His Word as well as gracious sheltering of the authentic divine service.” It was reduced by the author to 8 stanzas from an original 13. It is well to note the last half of each stanza is the same except for a slight change of wording in stanza 8. The appointed melody is “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern.”

O COME, ye Christians, with all joy,
Recount the love of God most high,
O come, your praises voicing,
With grateful hearts unto our God;
And to the Lord of Sabaoth
With lips of glad rejoicing:
Sing we,
Bring we
Hymns of beauty!
’Tis our duty,
God in heaven
To adore for what He’s given.

2 Now for another blessed year
We enter God’s own house to hear
The cheering proclamation,
In which the Word of grace lays bare
To us the gate of life most fair:
Release from all transgression!
Sing we,
Bring we
Hymns of beauty!
’Tis our duty,
God in heaven
To adore for what He’s given.

3 With gladness here we see outpoured
The services which to the Lord
Men in His temple render.
Here with great wonderment are heard
God’s wonders written in His Word,
His mighty deeds of splendor.
Sing we,
Bring we
Hymns of beauty!
’Tis our duty,
God in heaven
To adore for what He’s given.

4 Here Christians in their gath’ring live,
To God themselves an off’ring give,
For His delight and pleasure;
Here sound their sighs and holy lays,
For God’s deserved acclaim and praise,
O joy beyond all measure!
Sing we,
Bring we
Hymns of beauty!
’Tis our duty,
God in heaven
To adore for what He’s given.

5 Here righteousness divine is taught,
Here godliness to hearing brought,
Here faith is kindled brightly:
Here patience, love, hope, discipline,
And all the Spirit’s fruits within,
Are planted in us rightly.
Sing we,
Bring we
Hymns of beauty!
’Tis our duty,
God in heaven
To adore for what He’s given.

6 O mighty bounty God hath wrought!
O holy good with graces fraught!
Come, Christians, here to gather;
Here doth the Lord of Glory dwell:
O blest are they who dress them well
To serve their God and Father!
Sing we,
Bring we
Hymns of beauty!
’Tis our duty,
God in heaven
To adore for what He’s given.

7 O Thou who here Thy home dost claim,
All praise is due unto Thy name,
Thou God of wondrous actions!
Here may He be blest and adored,
Where from His true and Holy Word
Flow ceaseless benefactions.
Sing we,
Bring we
Hymns of beauty!
’Tis our duty,
God in heaven
To adore for what He’s given.

8 Yet more, Most High, we ask of Thee:
That we may come yet faithfully,
The flock forsaking never;
Preserve Thy church, this gathering,
And all who here Thy doctrine bring,
So shall the saints be ever
Singing,
Bringing
Hymns of beauty!
’Tis our duty,
God in heaven
To adore for what He’s given.

GERMAN
Kommt her ihr Christen voller Freud,
erzählet Gottes Freundlichkeit,
kommt her und laßt erklingen
die Stimm des Dankens unserm Gott;
laßt uns dem Herren Zebaoth
mit frohem Munde singen:
singet, bringet
schöne Weisen, laßt uns preisen
Gottes Gaben,
die wir hier genossen haben.

2 Wir gehn in diesem Gotteshaus
Ein Jahr nun wieder ein und aus,
und hören da verkünden
den edlen Schatz das Gnadenwort,
das uns entdeckt des Lebens Pfort:
Vergebung unsrer Sünden.
Singet, bringet, &c.

3 Da sehen wir mit Freuden an,
die Dienste, die man leisten kann
dem Herrn in seinem Tempel;
da hört man mit Verwundrung zu,
was Gott für große Thaten thu
und Wunder ohn Exempel.
Singet, bringet, &c.

4 Da kömmt die Christenheit zu Hauf,
und opfert Gott sich selber auf
zum Dienst und Wohlgefallen;
da ist Gebet und anders mehr,
was Gott gereicht zu Lob und Ehr.
O Gottbeliebtes Wallen!
Singet, bringet, &c.

5 Da wird Gerechtigkeit gelehrt,
da wird Gottseligkeit gehört,
da wird der Glaub entzündet:
Geduld, Lieb, Hoffnung, keusche Zucht,
und was noch mehr für Geistesfrücht,
wird Alles da gegründet.
Singet, bringet, &c.

6 O große Wohlthat, die Gott thut!
O heilig gnadenreiches Gut!
Kommt her, kommt liebe Christen!
Da wohnt der Herr der Herrlichkeit:
wohl denen, die sich allezeit
zu seinem Dienste rüsten!
Singet, bringet, &c.

7 Ja, der du hier hast Feur und Heerd:
dein Nam wird billig hoch geehrt,
o Gott, von großen Thaten!
Gelobt sei Gott an diesem Ort,
allwo sein heilig wahres Wort
bisher so wohl gerathen.
Singet, bringet, &c.

8 Noch eins, o Höchster, bitten wir:
laß uns auch künftig für und für
allhier zusammen kommen!
Bewahr die Kirch und die Gemein
und die darinnen Lehrer sein:
so werden dir die Frommen
Singen, bringen, &c.

Gleichwie sein Haus der Vogel baut

Here is my translation of the Church hymn “Gleichwie sein Haus der Vogel baut” (Nicolaus Selnecker, d. 1592), as it appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #264, along with the omitted stanzas from the 10-stanza version originally published in the author’s Geistliche Psalmen (1587) with the title “For Preservation in God’s Word: from the 84th Psalm.” It was originally appointed to be sung to “Mensch willt du leben seliglich” with “Kyrioleis” after each stanza, presumably dividing the first slur of the last line to accommodate a full eight syllables. In later use, however, the melody “Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort” was appointed and the Kyrioleis omitted.

LIKE as the sparrow builds his home,
The swallow to her nest doth come,
So do I seek with heart sincere,
Lord Jesus Christ, Thy altar dear.

2 Through sorrow’s valley help me, Lord!
Thy servants everywhere afford,
That Thy blest fount may be maintained
And we preserve the faith unstained.

3 Far better ’tis to be the least
In Thy assembly, at Thy feast,
Than worldly glory to possess
with wealth, goods, money, fame, success.

4 Thou, Lord, my Light, my Sun, my Shield,
Rich blessings graciously dost yield;
Help, Lord, the faith in us increase,
And let our hearts in Thee find peace.

[5 Preserve Thy church in every land,
Thy name to every clime expand,
Lord Christ, our sure Foundation be,
Give faithful teachers constantly.

6 With us abide, Thy crown defend,
Thy Word and saving doctrine tend;
Thou hast all pow’r and might indeed,
Though Thee the world may little heed.

7 What is the world? What is its art?
What are its dreams that soon depart?
Who hath Thy Word will always stay;
Pride, pow’r, and favor pass away.

8 Help, O Lord Christ, and hide Thee not,
Nor for our sins our due allot;
Consider our life’s brevity
And be our stay continually.

9 Thy Church preserve, Thy Judgment speed,
Leave us no more to wait in need,
Deliver us from every woe,
Grant us Thy blessedness to know.

10 Help us to pass through death’s Red Sea
Turn Thou our heart, O Lord, to Thee,
That we escaping shame and sin
Unto the promised land may win.]

GERMAN
Gleichwie sein Haus der Vogel baut,
die Schwalb auch auf ihr Nestlein schaut,
also tracht ich nun ganz und gar,
Herr Jesu Christ, nach deim Altar.

2 Hilf mir,o Herr, durchs Jammerthal!
Gieb deinen Dienern überall,
daß sie dein Brünnlein leiten recht,
daß wir bhalten den Glauben schlecht. […recht]

3 Viel besser ist, in deiner Gmein
der Allergringst und wenigst sein,
denn sonst der Herrlichst in der Welt,
voll Reichthum, Glück, Ehr, Gut und Geld.

4 Du bist der Herr, Licht, Sonn und Schild,
giebst Gnad und Ehr, bist gut und mild.
Hilf, Herr, den Glauben in uns mehr
und unser Herz zu dir bekehr!

5 Erhalt dein Kirch in allem Land,
dein Nam überall sei bekannt.
Herr Christ, sei du das Fundament,
gib treue Lehrer bis ans End.

6 Bleib bei uns gnädig, rett dein Ehr,
erhalt dein Wort und heilsam Lehr.
Du hast doch allen Gwalt und Macht,
obgleich die Welt dein nicht viel acht.

7 Was ist die Welt? was ist ihr Kunst?
Was ist ihr Fantasei und Dunst?
Wer dein Wort hat, derselb besteht,
Gunst, Kunst, Stolz, Mut, Trotz, Gwalt vergeht.

8 Hilf, O Herr Christ, verbirg dich nicht,
nach unsern S¨¨nden uns nicht richt.
Denk, wie kurz unser Leben sei.
Darum steh du uns allzeit bei.

9 Erhalt dein Kirch, und eil zum Gricht,
laß uns nun länger warten nicht,
rett uns von aller Qual und Pein,
und laß uns bei dir selig sein.

10 Hilf uns recht gehn durchs rothe Meer,
und unser Herzen zu dir kehr,
daß wir entfliehn der Sündenschand
und kommen ins gelobte Land.
