Emanuel Cronenwett, of the Christian life (following Jesus) hymn, “Ich armer Sünder bin auch heilig” (Anon. 1870?), in GGELB #394, with melody assignment “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.” The hymn first appears in GGELB 1870 and was perhaps created by one of its committee; it features inexact rhyme in several places, and has a more modern tone generally. Rev. Cronenwett’s translation of stanzas 3–5, 7–8 (unusually omitting 1st st.), first appeared in the ELH (Ohio) 1880.

POOR sinner that I am, I’m holy,
(Though some may scoff at such a word)
Yet not in my own self, but solely
By faith in Jesus Christ, my Lord.
I live alone by Jesus’ grace,
Who was made holy in my place.

2 He sanctified Himself—my Savior!—
That I in truth might holy be;
For sins that gained me God’s disfavor
He paid the price, and I am free;
From wrath and judgment there’s reprieve:
What He hath promised, I believe.

3 Who knew no sin and no deceiving,
Has borne my sin and my distress;
And I by grace in Him believing,
Now deck me with His righteousness.
As He is sinner to my good,
So I am holy through His blood.

4 Nay not in me, self-righteous were it,
On God's grace rests my holiness;
He looks on Christ's atoning merit,
And counts this as my righteousness:
This I believe, and hence my claim,
That I am holy in His name.

5 In Christ, by faith then, I am holy,
In self though 'tis not yet the case;
But I will likewise now so wholly
Seek e'er in life to walk by grace,
That soul and body may remain
All blameless till Christ come again.

6 I will for holiness endeavor,
Without which none can Jesus see.
I will renounce all sin whatever;
For whoso buildeth sinfully,
And not on Christ the Savior first,
For his salvation, is accursed.

7 I will devote my every member
To serve in righteousness God's will,
Then when I falter, e'er remember
That I may trust God's mercy still;
And pray that God would guide through strife,
That I may lead a holy life.

8 Thus will I walk, O God, before Thee,
That my light too may shine alway,
And that I by my life adore Thee,
Till I at length on that great day
In life and self shall holy be,
And wholly perfect, Lord, with Thee.

9 O Jesus, help! Jacob Gabriel Wolf, d. 1754), in GGELB #391, with melody assignment “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten” and omitting stanza 3. Rambach includes the hymn from the Porst Gsb 1711, according to Fischer, with “Streiter” instead of “Jünger” in the second line. “Fleiß” was changed to “Ernst” in Freylinghausen 1714, along with other changes downplaying the militant conceit. For my translation I follow the Freylinghausen version with the variants as it appears in GGELB, except for the omitted stanza, given here from Freylinghausen. It first appears in the author’s Himmlische Lieder (1631), p. 248ff., Part 4, Christian and Devout Prayer-Hymns, with setting in cantus and bassus and title “The Sixth Hymn is a heartfelt prayer to God for earnest following of life and conduct of our dearest Savior Jesus Christ, especially in true godliness and all good works.” The cantus and bass are conveniently given together in Müller’s Geistliche Seelenmusik (1684) below.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; W. Foster first gave the first and last stanzas English rendering in the Moravian hymnal. Winkworth’s complete translation was mostly deficient in the last two lines, which in stanzas 1–3 ended in iambs rather than trochees. I include the proper melody as it appears in the original publication. The hymn, which combines a paraphrase of Psalms 149 and 150, is absent from Fischer’s lexicon. It should be distinguished from other hymns of similar first lines, which are largely paraphrases of Psalm 98 or 149. It first appears in the Vollständige Kirchen- und Haus-Music (Breslau, 1644), and is here based on that text with the music from the later edition of 1720. Note the greater rhythmic expression in the original. The first stanza is famously set by Bach for chorale (BWV 411).

Here is my translation of the children’s hymn, “Kommt, ihr Kinder dieser Erden” (Christian Schumann, d. 1744), in GGELB #364 with melody assignment “Alles ist an Gottes Segen,” and insertion of spurious stanza (7), included below as *; first appearing in the author’s Der Katchismus in Liedern (1728) for the Table of Duties “The duties of children toward parents. Sirach 3.” I use an early text from 1740 and note variants in square brackets below, as well as the extra stanza, probably inserted by the hymnal committee, since no other instance seems to exist. The intent is to include the scriptural origin of the command and blessing and perhaps lend some firmer footing to this hymn, which tends toward Rationalism (hence the several amendments of nebulous “heaven” to “God” or “Jesus”).

COME, ye children under heaven!
Would ye happiness be given,
Come and hearken! Fischer omits it from his lexicon under either title. I find it in the appendix of the posthumous Caspar Neumanns Kern aller Gebete und Gesänge (1732), p. 386, with title “Second Wedding Aria, to the tune: ‘Unser Sabbath geht zum Ende.’” It was included in the Preußen Gsb 1761, 1787. I have not yet discovered an image of the melody specified, unless a more common is meant by the text, such as “Herr, ich habe mißgehandelt” and “Unser Herrscher, unser König,” which may be found more easily, but which require a repetition of the last two lines of music. Alternately, I find in Zahn the pictured melody, which requires only the omission of the repeats, and is furthermore designed for such church “arias,” coming as it does from the Dresden Arien (1694).

FATHER, who Thy title holy
Hast on mortal men bestowed:
Bless, we pray, Thy servants lowly,
Reconciled by Jesus’ blood.
For with all both old and tender,
Thou art fatherhood’s defender.
(For with all both old and tender,
Thou art fatherhood’s defender.)

2 We may speak a pleasant blessing,
But without Thee, it must fall;
Thou, the height and depth possessing,
Art the Lord who workest all.
We, but men, who come proposing;
Thou, our God, Thy will disposing.
(We, but men, who come proposing;
Thou, our God, Thy will disposing.)

3 Let the gift Thou here hast given
To its blessed purpose come;
Pour Thy blessing down from heaven
On Thy children and their home,
Rest and peace abundant give them,
And at last in bliss receive them!
(Rest and peace abundant give them,
And at last in bliss receive them!)

Translation © 2024 Matthew Carver.

GERMAN

Vater! Fischer lists it under the first line “O großer Gott von Güt und Gnad / von dem der Stand und Orden,” giving its first appearance in Andächtiger Seelen geistliches Brand- und Ganz-Opfer (Leipzig, 1697). It was included by Rambach in his Haus-Gsb (1735). It then appears in the Württemberg Gsb 1741. In the Churz-Pfalz Gsb 1755 it appears somewhat altered, in 8 stanzas (omitting the original 7th, or subsuming it into the 6th) with title “Prayer of subjects for their authority” and with substantial differences; likewise in Hanover Kirchen-Gsb 1759 (by authority of the King of Great Britain), 2nd ed.; a later, transitional form lacking stanza 6 (the old stanzas 6–7, on what subjects owe their rulers) appears, e.g., in Heilige Lieder, for the congregation in Rabensburg (1772). The Ohio Synod form seems to be drawn from Albert Knapp’s Liederschatz from the early 19th c., with further adjustments. Julian finds it in the author’s Haus Gesang-Buch (1735), later altered (probably by Diterich) as “Du hast uns, Herr, die Pflicht,” in which form it was translated by Miss Ann B. Warner as “Lord, Thou hast bid us labour” (1858), which does not follow the meter. I present the original text, which the Ohio hymnal uses, with a couple older variants. The Evangelisches Gesangbuch (1742) provides scriptural references for each stanza: 1: Gen. 3:19 (here note, “labor” is toilsome, strenuous activity with meager return, not the first-appointed, pleasant, and profitable work of dressing and keeping the Garden, Gen. 2:15). 2:Sirach 7:16. 3: Matt. 6:32, 34; Eccles. 9:32. 4. There is no entry in Fischer’s lexicon. I find an early instance in Hessen-Hamburg Gsb 1734, and revised in Hanover 1740 as noted in square brackets. The more substantial revision, beginning “Wie heilig ist die Stätte hier, / wo ich mit Ehrfucht stehe,” is found more frequently now. The ascription line reads only “After the Latin Discubuit Jesu.” A translation of the Latin responsory, as amended by Bonnus for use in Lutheran churches (at Luther’s offhand suggestion, no less) is found in my Liber Hymnorum: The Latin Hymns of the Lutheran Church.

WHEN Jesus sat with His dear Twelve at table,
He said: I have desired, while I am able,
To eat this Pasch with you, ere as an off’ring
I must be suff’ring.

2 He took the bread, intent to serve and save them,
Gave thanks, and broke it, and the bread He gave them,
And said, Take, eat; this is My Body given
To gain you heaven!

3 So too when He had supped, without delaying,
He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it, saying,
Take, drink; this is My Blood, shed for remission
Of all transgression!

4 Eat, dear disciples, drink all to your blessing,
For your relief in trial and transgressing,
As oft ye do it, in remembrance owning
My death atoning.

5 Weary we come and weighed with many a burden;
O Helper, help! done,
And Thine anger justly won
Since our very first beginning
Through our vile desire for sinning

2 Yet Thou wouldst not strike us, Father,
As would be our proper share,
But in patience bear that rather
Which our feeble flesh may dare.
Yea, Thou ever seek’st the thing
That our best and rest may bring,
Lest we should be ever dying
And in hell’s abyss be lying.

3 When we were no strength possessing
Our own selves to justify,
Then it was Thy mighty blessing
Broke upon the morning sky;
When Thou, Lord, with love a-glow,
Didst this favor to us show:
That the Serpent’s Bane with power
Would appear th’ appointed hour.

4 Through the Savior’s wounds and dying
We, once sick and weak from sin,
Up from death eternal flying,
Are restored to life again,
If we only come in faith,
Trusting what our Savior saith,
Him alone with eyes attending, <br hath His own dear Son,
Giv’n to work mankind’s salvation.
And gives us what He hath won,
Binding us as living sheaves,
So that who in Him believes
Shall in sin not perish ever
But receive eternal favor.

9 Grace and life shall be his treasure,
Heaven’s bounties him befall,
Blissful tidings be his pleasure,
And the Law no more appall<br justified in full,
So that naught from Thee can take us.
Lo, the host celestial
Never did such grace receive
As Thou didst to mortals give
In Thy love, when Thou didst both in and by us;
This Thy heart will not deny us!

*13 Praise to Thee, the everliving
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Sound with voices of thanksgiving
Grant us, Father, Jhs., vol. 5, p. 5, no. 5, gives the original text, which I myself find in the author’s Hertzbewegliche Sonntagsandachten II (1652), no. XXXVI, with title “Repentance Hymn” and same melody appointment. The variants are especially substantial, esp. in stanza 3, the obscure syntax of which may have contributed to the later alteration. I have taken “Sündenwelt” in apposition to “Schuld,” though it is not a certain reading. Notably uncommon is that Harsdörfer rhymes the final line with lines 2 and 4, whereas it is normally unrhymed. I have followed the original text.

WE mortals, living, yet are dead
While in our sin proceeding;
Our soul’s distress in us is bred
Till we are lost, unheeding.
We live without all care or fear,
Too late God’s faithfulness revere,
To which we should be speeding.

2 Although we oft with guiling air
Some godly work endeavor,
Yet none can boast that he is fair
And pure in conscience ever.
But God is just, and only He.
We must unworthy servants be
Whose shame is ended never.

3 Among the sinful crowd I stand,
Chief worker of transgression,
For all my sins are like the sand,
Beyond enumeration;
Oh, God, let not such countless debt
And world of sin, divide me yet
From mercy and compassion.

4 I, prod’gal son, come in defeat,
My sinful deeds repenting,
And quickly seek Thy Mercy-seat,
No false delay inventing.
O Father, I have constantly
Against Thee done inqiquity;
Be not Thou yet resenting!

5 I am, alas! not worthy, Lord,
As Thy dear son to call me;
Sore was Thy wrath upon me poured;
Let mercy now befall me!
My pain and sorrow Thou dost see
And makest haste to rescue me
From sins which now appall me.

6 I, who before was as though dead,
Now find new life appearing,
New raiment, food, and drink, and bread
Thou givest for my cheering;
Therefore I will with guileless way
As Thy beloved child obey,
To Thy dear Word adhering.

Translation © 2024 Matthew Carver.

GERMAN

Wir Menschen sind lebendig todt,
wenn wir in Sünden wallen;
It seems to have been first published in the author’s Biblischer Weyrauch (1687) with title “On Sunday Morning, Repentance hymn. Mel. According to Kümmerle, it originates from the hymn, “Stärke, Mittler, deine Teurerlösten” in the author’s Erster Sammlung Geistlicher Lieder (1772), an alternating hymn between choir and congregation “at the confirmation of young Christians,” which was then reworked by C. C. Sturm into a prayer-hymn to be sung by confirmands, and thus came into Württemberg Gsb 1791 [melody: Mitten wir im Leben sind], and in 1793 (the year of Münter’s death) received its own moving proper melody by Justin Heinrich Knecht.
