Christ der Herr wie Matthäus schreibt

 Here is my translation of the hymn, “Christ der Herr wie Matthäus schreibt” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for Trinity XVIII, on Matt. 22. Note that the penultimate stanza was recast after the first edition. Gesius 1605 indicates the melody from the previous Sunday’s hymn.

THE Lord (as Matthew’s pen doth write)
The Sadducees did silence quite,
Their doctrine damned, proved openly
There will a resurrection be.

2 The Pharisees heard their distress,
And thought they would have more success
Wherefore as one assembled horde,
They tried their luck with Christ the Lord.

3 Then one of them, a lawyer, rose,
And thinking thus his case to close,
And tempt the Lord, asked craftily:
“This question, Master, answer me:

4 “Which of the Law’s Commandments Ten
Is chief, which God gave to us men?
And which is greatest, thinkest Thou?
Show me without demurring now!”

5 “With all thy soul, heart, mind and sense,
Love, hope, and put all confidence
In God alone,” the Lord did state:
“This is the First Command, and great.”

6 “The Second runs conformably:
Thou shalt thy neighbor love as thee.
All God’s commands in Scripture found
Have in these two commnds their ground.”

7 Yet further Jesus to him spake:
“The Law your main concern ye make;
But when will ye have Christ in view,
Who in the Law is promised you?

8 “What think ye, then? Whose son is He?”
To this they answered candidly
And said: “He is King David’s Son,
And shall be seated on his throne.”

9 Christ saith: “How then doth it accord
That David speaks of Him as Lord
In spirit? How may it be done,
That He should be both Lord and Son?”

10 This question was for them too high
And keen, and none could make reply.
That day the Lord good rest enjoyed,
Since they no more their lips employed.

11 All praise to Thee, Lord, we impart,
Who Son and Lord of David art,
His Lord in nature all divine,
His Son in human nature fine.

Christ der HErr (wie Mattheus schreibt)
die Sadduzäer gar eintreibt,
verdammt ihr Lehr, beweiset frei,
daß gwiß ein Auferstehung sei.

2 Die Pharisäer hörten das,
hofften, es sollt ihn glingen baß,
drum sammlet sich der mehrer Theil,
versuchten auch am Herrn ihr Heil.

3 Sie schoßen ein aus unter ihn,
der macht sich zu dem Herren hin,
versucht ihn, und sehr trotzig sprach:
Meister, antwort mir auf die Frag.

4 Welchs ist das fürnehmste Gebot,
im Gsetz, das uns hat geben Gott,
und welchs meinst du, das größte sei,
das zeig mir an ohn alle Scheu.

5 Von ganzer Seel, Herz, Muth und Sinn
liebt Got, hoff, trau allein auf ihn,
antwort ihm der Herr Jesu Christ,
das fürnehmste Gebot es ist.

6 Das ander ist dem gleichförmig,
dein Nächsten lieb wie selber dich,
was im Gsetz und Propheten Gott
fordert, lehren dei zwei Gebot.

7 Ferner zu ihm der Herre sprach,
vom Gsetz ist nur all euer Frag,
wenn fragt ihr auch nach eurem Christ,
der euch im Gsetz verheißen ist.

8 Wisset ihr auch, wes SOhn er sei?
Darauf antworten sie ihm frei,
und sprachen, er ist Davids Sohn,
und wird sitzen auf seinem Thron.

9 Christus sprach: Wie das ihn im Geist,
König David sein Herren heißt,
das wird sich je nicht reimen wohl,
das er sein Herr und Sohn sein soll.

10 Zu scharff und hoch war ihn die Frag, {Aber die Frag war ihn zu scharf}
daß die dem Herrn auf diesen Tag {kein Wort jemands antworten darf,}
nicht antworten konnten ein Wort, {der HErr den Tag hat gute Ruh,}
und durft ihn niemand fragen fort. Pihr Maul mußten sie halten zu.}

11 Lob, Ehr sei dir Herr Jesu Christ,
Davidis Sohn und Herr du bist,
sein Herr bist du nach der Gottheit,
aber sein Sohn nach der Menschheit.
