Here is my translation of the hymn, “Aus dem Schiff aufs Land Jesus trat” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for Trinity XIX. Gesius 1605 appoints the

Mel. Christe, der du bist Tag und Licht.

CHRIST left the ship and came ashore,
And to His city, where they bore
To Him a man with palsied limb,
That He might pity have on him.

2 Now therefore, when He saw their faith,
He to the sick with palsy saith:
I tell thee, son, now cheerful be,
Thy sins be all forgiven thee.

3 And certain of the scribes were there
Who did within themselves declare:
Forsooth this Man blasphemeth God
And over all His Law hath trod.

4 But Jesus knew their thought suppressed,
To whom all hearts are manifest
And said: Why think ye evilly,
And why presume to measure Me?

5 For, tell Me, which may easier be:
To say, thy sins be pardoned thee,
Or else to tell the lame, Arise
And walk! I thee unparalyze.

6 But that ye may believe and know
That I have forgiveness can bestow
On earth, for all who will believe
In Me, my present work perceive.

7 Then saith He to the palsy-sick
Arise, take up thy bed, go quick.
And he arose, and thence did run,
Restored and praising God the Son.

8 The people marveled mightily
And worshiped God in unity,
That He doth all things well and right
And gives to men such pow’r and might.

9 All glory, Jesus Christ, be Thine,
Physician, Savior all divine,
Who with a word dost make us whole
And save us both in body_and soul.

10 We thank Thee that Thou dost bestow
The pow’r of keys on us below
That so Thy church from sins may free
All sinners from iniquity.

11 Here let them find their comfort best,
Whose conscience will not let him rest,
Let him to Absolution run,
Here instituted by God’s Son.

Aus dem Schiff aufs Land Jesus trat,
und kam wieder in seine Stadt,
da bracht man ein Gichtbrüchtigen,
daß er sich sein sollt nehmen an.

2 Da er nun ihren Glauben sach,
zu dem Gichtbrüchtigen er sprach:
Mein Sohn, ich sag dir, sei getrost,
von deiner Sünd bist du erlöst.’

3 Bald dachten bei sich etliche
Pharisär und Schriftgelehrte:
Fürwahr es lästert dieser Gott,
und handelt wider sein Gebot.

4 Da Jesus ihr Gedanken sah,
der alle Herzn erkündigt, da
sprach er: Wie mögt so arges ihr
denken, und dürfts zu messen mir?

5 Sagt mir, welchs mag doch leichter sein,
sprechen, sey los von Sünden dein,
oder sagen, steh auf und geh,
sei frisch undgsund, und wandele?

6 Auf daß ihr aber glauben künnt,
daß ich Macht hab auf Erd die Sünd
zu vergeben, wer glaubt an mich,
so merkt drauf, was jetzt thun werd ich.

7 Sprach drauf zu Gichtbrüchtigen man,
steh auf, nimm dein Bett, geh von dann.
Do stund er auf und ging darvon
gsund, frisch, und preiset Gottes Sohn.

8 Das Volk darob verwundert sich,
und lobten Gott einmüthiglich,
daß er alle Ding so wohl schafft,
und gibt Menschen solch Gwalt und Macht.

9 Lob, Ehr sei dir, Herr Jesu Christ,
unser Heiland und Arzt du bist,
an Leib und Seel machst uns gesund
mit eim Wort das geht aus deim Mund.

10 Wir danken dir, daß du die Macht
der Kirchen gibst und Schlüssel Kraft,
daß sie von Sünden sprechen los
darf alle arme Sünder groß.

11 Des soll sich trösten jedermann,
dem sein Gwissen kein Ruh will lan,
und gehn zur Absolution,
die eingesetzt hat Gottes Sohn. Amen.
