Here is my translation of the hymn “An eim Sabbath Christus der Herr” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for Trinity XVII. An additional supplicatory stanza from later editions is here added. Gesius 1605 appoints for the music his setting with the

Mel.: Jesus zu seinen Jüngern sprach.
 

CHRIST on the Sabbath day of rest
Ate as a Pharisee’s house-guest,
And watchers kept Him well in view,
To see what He would say and do.

2 A certain man with dropsy came,
And well those people watched the same,
That, should He heal, and so abuse
The Sabbath, they might Him accuse.

3 This trap for Jesus they had laid,
Who had Himself the Sabbath made.
He saw their wicked guile and art,
Who is the Searcher of the heart.

4 So Jesus spake unto those men:
“Now answer Me this question, then:
Is it, e’en on the Sabbath, wrong
To heal a man and make him strong?”

5 They held their peace at what He spake,
And none of them would answer make.
Then Jesus took the man, and lo,
He healed him, and He let him go.

6 “Which man, if ass or ox shall fall
Into a pit, will then forestall
To run, though it the Sabbath be,
And pull him out immediately?

7 “Then should a man be helpless left?”
And none could give an answer deft;
Convicted by his very heart,
Each held his peace and stood apart.

8 There others were among the rest,
Each thought that he himself was best,
And would most highly honored be;
Them also Christ taught faithfully:

9 “When thou art bidden by a groom,
Sit not down in the highest room;
If there be one of higher name,
Then thou must yield thy seat in shame.

10 “So sit down in the lowest room,
Until the man who bade thee come
And tell thee: Go up higher, friend;
So art thou honored in the end.

11 “Whoe’er exalts himself as more,
Shall be abased and shown the door.
But he himself that humble makes
The greatest honor often takes.”

12 For God no pride can tolerate,
Proud spirits He can soon deflate.
A room with God the humble finds,
He pleasure takes in lowly minds.

*13 Lord, help us not be arrogant,
Nor judgment just upon us sent;
But let us take the lowest place,
Till Thou shalt honor us in grace.

GERMAN

An eim Sabbath Christus der Herr
aß zu gast bei eim Phariseer,
da gaben Laurer auf ihn Acht,
als was er redet, thet und macht.

2 Ein Wassersüchtiger kam dar,
des nahmen sie gar eben wahr,
sie sprachen: Macht er ihn gesund,
Ursach zu ihm find wir die Stund.

3 Drum daß er nicht den Sabbath hält,
da sie ihm so hatten gestellt,
merkt er ihr arge Tück und List,
denn er ein Herzkündiger ist.

4 Drum er zu den Schriftglehrten sprach,
antwortet mir auf diese Frag:
Wers auch Sünd, wenn am Sabbath gleich
ich hülf den Leuten von der Seuch.

5 Sie schwiegen aber alle still,
ihr keiner drauf antworten will,
da griff ihn der Herr Jesus an,
macht ihn gesund und ließ ihn gahn.

6 Wenn euch ein Esel oder Rind
fällt in dein Grub, ihr lauft geschwind,
wenns gleich an einem Sabbath ist,
helft ihr ihm raus zur selben Frist.

7 Sollt man ein Mensch verderben lan,
ihr keiner drauf antworten kann,
ihr eigens Herz sie überzeugt,
drum ein jeder darzu still schweigt.

8 Auch waren da etliche Gäst,
ein jeder meint, er wär der best,
und wollt am höchsten sein geehrt,
dieselben Christus also lehrt.

9 Wenn dich zur Hochzeit lädt ein Mann,
so setz dich nicht bald obenan,
ist ein Ehrlicher vor der Hand,
 so mußt du weichen ihm mit Schand.

10 Drum setz dich an die unter Statt,
bis kmomt der dich geladen hat,
und sprech: Mein Freund, sitz obenan,
so ists dein Ehr bei jedermann.

11 Wer sich zu sehr selbst bricht herfür,
den weist man oft hinder die Thür,
wer sich demütigt, wird erhö[c]ht,
und oft die größte Ehr empfächt.

12 Denn gott kein Stolz mag leiden nicht,
Stolzen Geistern die Schanz er bricht,
Demuth bei ihm hat Platz und Statt,
an Demuth Gott Gefallen hat.

*13 Hilf, Herr, das wir stolzieren nicht,
und ja nicht falln in dein Gericht,
ach, laß uns stehn hinter der Thür,
das du uns helft mit Ehrn herfür.
