Als das Volk Israel auszog

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Als das Volk Israel auszog” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm CXIV, In exitu Israël, with title “Easter (or Passover) hymn” and melody assignment “Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam.”

 

WHEN Isr’el went from Egypt’s land,
Its chains of bondage severed,
And Jacob was by God’s own hand
From strangers’ yoke delivered,
Then Judah was his holy place,
For God’s true adoration,
God showed His glory in His grace
With pow’r to all His nation
By oath and confirmation.

2 The sea beheld and fled in haste,
The waters were dispersèd,
The Jordan too was backward chased,
To be by foot traversèd.
The lofty mountains skipped and leapt
Like rams by rocks surrounded,
And all the hills that still had kept
Like lambkins skipped and bounded,
At such great things astounded.

3 What ailed thee, O thou mighty sea
That thou didst flee so hasty?
Thou Jordan, what so frightened thee,
And what thus backward chased thee?
Ye mountains and ye hills that sleep,
What hath your heart invested
With such a will to skip and leap
As though with flocks infested?
God’s hand the foe hath bested!

4 A trembling through earth’s bosom runs
Before the Lord’s dread presence—
The one true God, whom Jacob’s sons
Adore with deep obeisance:
He turns the rock by His decree
Into a water standing,
A torrent rich and running free,
From flinty stone expanding;
How wondrous His commanding!

Als das Volck Iſrael auszog
Aus der Egypter Lande :,:
Und Jacob wurd vom frembden Joch
Erlöſt durch Gottes Hande,
Da ward Juda das Heiligthumb,
Zu Gottes Lob und Preiſe,
Gott ſeinem Volck mit Ehr und Ruhm
Die Macht und Herrſchaft leiſtet,
Die er ihm hat verheiſſen.

2  Das Meer ſah dis und floh zuhand,
Gantz trocken ward's im Grunde :,:
Der Jordan ſich zurücke wand,
Das man durchgehen kunnte,
Die hohen Berge hüpfften ſehr,
Gleichwie die Schäfflein junge,
Und alle Hügel ringst umbher
Gleichwie die Lämmer ſprungen
Ob dieſem großen Wunder.

3  Du Meer, wie war dir denn geſchehn,
Daß du ſo ferne floheſt? :,:
Du, Jordan, wolltſt nicht weiter gehn,
Den Strom zurücke zogeſt,
Ihr Berg und Hügel, ſagt mir doch,
Wie wars umb euch beſchaffen,
Daß ihr ſo hüpfft und ſpringet hoch,
Gleichwie die jungen Schaffe?
Gotts Hand die Feind hat troffen.

4  Die Erd erbebt, beweget ſich
Für unſerm Gott dem HERREN :,:
Dem wahren Gott, den heiliglich
Die Kinder Jacobs ehren,
Den Felß er wandelt in der Höh
In einen Waſſerbrunnen,
Es war ein reicher Strom und See
Aus hartem Stein entſprungen.
Sind das nicht groſſe Wunder?
