Jesum Christum, der Welt Heiland

Here is my translation of the hymn “Jesum Christum, der Welt Heiland” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for the feast of St. Matthew, a paraphrase of the Gospel from Matthew 9 with a closing supplication. Gesius 1605 indicates the melody “Erhalt uns,” etc.

Mel.: Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort.

CHRIST Jesus, Savior of all man,
The Father by His gracious plan
Sent to bring back the sheep astray
And to be their dear Lord for aye.

2 When Matthew sitting He did see
At work, He saith: Come, follow Me.
At once he from his work arose,
And followed where his Master chose.

3 He went with Jesus to his home,
And many publicans did come,
And sinners too from everywhere,
For they had heard that Christ was there.

4 Of Him they many things had heard;
There did He preach to them God’s Word,
Receiving them soft-heartedly,
And showed them tender charity.

5 With them at table too He sat,
And without fear spoke, drank, and ate,
The Pharisees looked on with pain,
And asked His foll’wers to explain.

6 Your Master much offendeth us,
Such publicans and sinners thus
To welcome in. It is not meet
That He with such should drink and eat.

7 When Jesus heard, to them He said:
The healthy no physician need,
But ’tis the weary, sick, and weak,
That eagerly the doctor seek.

8 But ye, in your hypocrisy,
Dream that ye need no remedy,
But that by off’rings all is done.
Therefore ye heed Me not a one.

9 Hosea saith far differently:
’Tis mercy that well pleaseth Me.
I love not much the off’ring-fire;
’Tis mercy most that I desire.

10 It was for sinners that I came,
To show their sickness, sin and shame,
To call them to repentance meek,
That they might their Physician seek.

11 They who their sin and sickness know,
To their physician swiftly go,
But those who think they need no cure
Know not what use the doctor were.

12 I sought not righteous men, who hate
My teaching and My office great.
With joy alone they come to Me
Who own their own iniquity.

13 Help us, Lord Jesus, Mary’s Son,
That we may our trespasses own,
And hate it ever heartily,
And as our Savior welcome Thee.

Jesum Christum, der Welt Heiland,
Gott der Vater drum hat gesandt,
daß ers verlorne Schäfelein
suchen sollt und sein Herre sein.

2 Da er Mattheum sitzen sah
am Zoll, sprach er: Folg du mir nach.
Bald gehorcht er des Herren Stimm,
stund auf vom Zoll und folget ihm.

3 Und führt Jesum mit sich zu Haus,
da solchs brach bei den Zöllnern aus,
kamen ihr viel gegangen dar,
Weil sie hörtn, daß Christus da war.

4 Von dem sie hatten viel gehört,
do predigt er ihn Gottes Wort,
und nahm sie auf sänftmüthiglich,
erzeig tsich gegen ihn freundlich.

5 Mit ihn er auch zu Tische saß,
ohn Scheu mit ihn redt, trank, und aß,
solchs that den Pharisäern weh,
rüsselten drum seine Jünger.

6 Eurem Meister das nicht gezimmt,
daß er Sündr und Zöllner aufnimmt,
und sich zu solchem Leuten gsellt,
mit ihn trinkt und Collazen hält.

7 Jesus das hört, und zu ihn spricht:
Ein Gsunder darf des Arztes nicht,
wer aber krankt ist, schwach und matt
ein Lust und Lieb zum Doktor hat.

8 Euch aber treugt die Gleißnerei,
ihr meint ihr dörft kein Arzenei,
mit Opfern seis alls ausgericht,
drum ihr meiner gar achtet nicht.

9 HOseas gar viel anders sagt,
Barmherzigkeeit mir wohl behagt,
am Opfer leidt mir nicht sehr viel,
Barmherzigkeit ich haben will.

10 Ich bin drum kommen, daß ich muß
die Sünder fordern zu der Buß,
und ihn ihr Krankheit zeigen an,
auf daß sie Lust zum Arzet han.

11 Wer sein Seuch und Gebrech erkennt,
derselb zum Arzt bald läuft und rennt,
wer aber meint, ihm sei gar wohl,
weiß nicht warzu der Doktor soll.

12 Der Grechten halb bin ich nicht hie,
mein Lehru nd Amt verachten sie,
mit Freud allein annehmen mich,
die für Sünder erkennen sich.

13 Hilf uns, Herr Christ, Mariä Kind,
daß wir erkennen unser Sünd,
und werden ihn von Herzen gramm,
und nehmen dich zum Heiland an.
