Laß die Welt böse machen

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Laß die Welt böse machen” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, for Trinity XII (Gospel).

Mel.: Ich dank dir, lieber Herre.

IN all their thoughts and doing
The world may do their worst;
My God shall well be doing
And bless what they have cursed.
Though Satan seek to ruin
All that our God doth well,
God quickly can undo it,
And shame the fiend of hell.

2 Thy ways until life’s ending
Let in God’s hands be laid;
Trust Him to keep attending,
Who gives thee help and aid.
He who o’er all things reigneth
Keeps thee with father-care;
Who thee in life maintaineth
Provides for thee fore’er.

3 He who all things well doeth
All wrongs doth rectify,
The old and weak reneweth,
Puts straight what was awry.
Trust God, let Him be reigning,
With mind and strength arrayed;
He will be thee sustaining
He gives thee help and aid.

4 Praise God for His good favor,
Which hath done all things well.
Now naught can harm me ever,
All ills God doth dispel.
Yea, He will watch unceasing,
And father-help will spare,
My every matter blessing
Now here, and ever there.

Laß die Welt böse machen,
was sie nur denkt und thut,
mein Gott wird alle Sachen
doch endlich machen gut.
Will Satan gleich verstören,
was Gott hat wohl gemacht,
Gott kanns gar bald umkehren,
daß der Feind wird verlacht.

2 Befiehl Gott deine Wege,
der dich schützt früh und spat,
glaub fest, daß er dein pflege,
der der schafft Hülf und Rath,
der alle Welt regieret,
der schützt dich väterlich,
der dich allzeit geführet,
versorgt dich ewiglich.

3 Der alles wohl konnt machen,
macht ja noch alles recht,
in allen deinen Sachen,
was krumm ist, macht er schlecht,
trau Gott, laß ihn nur walten,
ihm fehlt kein Rath noch That,
er wird dich wohl erhalten,
er schafft dir Hülf und Rath.

4 Gott Lob vor seine Gnade,
die alles wohl gemacht,
nun ist nichts, das mir schade,
weil Gott mich selbst bewacht,
der wirds auch ferner machen,
und helfen väterlich
in allen meinen Sachen
hier und dort ewiglich.
