Verlaßt euch nicht auf große Zahl

Here is my translation of the hymn “Verlaßt euch nicht auf große Zahl” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, the ninth of thirteen hymns for Trinity XIV, among which is a narrative paraphrase, a few on the theme of gratitude and praise, and like this, a few on the theme of the fallacy of numbers. The title given here is “Of the Great Crowd of the Ungrateful.” Here it is well to recall Jerome’s saying: Multitudo errantium non parit errorit patrocinium: The multitude of the erring does not justify the error.

DO not in multitude confide!
See how it faileth far and wide,
How pope and Turk are lying;
And all the mighty factions see,
Who think they must be right and free,
Since flocks to them are flying.

2 The Zwinglian spirit, in its pride,
Doth in their number most confide,
And thereon build their tower,
And hope to mount the highest height
In reason, praise, art, wealth, and might—
Such things with them have power.

3 It is their way, with guile to speak,
The good will of great lords to seek
And to obtain their favor;
Awhile they act like others fair,
Till spreads their poison everywhere,
Then shines their false behavior.

4 The Holy Ghost hath no such mind,
Nor veils His creed till He may find
A mighty congregation;
The nine Judéan lepers fall,
The one Samaritan of all
Retains the righteous station.

5 The whole wide world he doth not fear,
Gives Christ his thanks and praise sincere,
And boldly to Him cleaveth;
The one more than the nine is worth,
When he holds fast against the earth,
Nor his Foundation leaveth.

6 Once Noah safe with few abode
Throughout the raging of the flood.
The way Elias knoweth:
Of prophets false a mighty crew
Are nothing ’gainst his doctrine true.
Each saint God’s praises showeth.

Verlaßt euch nicht auf große Zahl,
wahrlich sie gilt nicht überall
wie Pabst und Türke liegen,
und ander große Rotterei,
lassen sich dünken recht und frei,
wenn sie viel Anhang kriegen.

2 Als der zwinglische Schwarm und Geist
sich drauf verläßt am allermeist,
wenns viel Leut mit ihm halten,
vornehmlich so groß in der Welt
an Macht, Vernunft, Kunst, Ehr und Geld,
das muß bei ihnen walten.

3 Besondern ist das ihre Kunst,
trachten nach großer Herren Gunst,
dieselbig einzunehmen;
stelln sich ein Weil den andern gleich,
bis daß ihr Gift viel überschleich
nicht ehr an Tag sich geben.

4 Das ist nicht heilges Geistes Art,
nirgend er sein Bekenntnis spart,
bis auf ein groß Gemeine:
wenn gleich die neun Jüdische Mann
abfalln, so bleibet doch bestahn
der Samarit alleine.

5 Er scheuet nicht die ganze Welt,
sich offentlich zu Christo hält,
dankbar mit Herz und Munde;
der einig mehr denn Neune gilt,
wenn alles Volk wider ihn hielt,
weicht er doch nicht im Grunde.

6 Mit wenigen der Noah blieb
zur ungeheuren Sündflut Zeit,
Elias weiß die Weise:
falscher Propheten große Zahl,
gilt gegen ihm nichts überall,
ein jeder selbs Gott preise.
