Ach wie elend ist unsre Zeit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ach wie elend ist unsre Zeit” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Trinity XII, a parody on and homage to Johann Heune’s (Gigas’s) hymn of the same first line. As usual, each stanza begins with the original author’s first line, while the remaining text relates more directly to the themes of the day and the Gospel Lesson. While referring to my translation of Heune’s hymn, I did not retain the exact wording for this parody. Several proper melodies are indicated in Zahn, none in Neumeister’s book. I give them below, though presumably the one used by Pachelbel would be likely.

Mel.: Ach wie elend ist unser Zeit.
 

ALAS, how wretched is our age,
In which we now are dwelling,
Where fear and heartache freely rage
And grief beyond all telling!
Both soul and body feel distress,
And last, o’er all, death’s fearsomeness
Shall strike the greatest terror.

2 Alas, through Adam’s fall and sin
We all these plagues inherit!
Since in that sin we all join in,
And these our burdens merit;
And if God’s comfort were not here,
It would far better be, I fear,
If we were ne’er begotten.

3 Yet Thou, Lord God, our Refuge art;
With Thee we are in favor!
That mis’ry, though it grieve our heart,
Cannot harm us forever.
Through Christ Thou mak’st all ills to cease,
And bringest us to rest and peace,
And savest us! So be it.

Ach wie elend ist unsre Zeit,
da wir auf Erden leben!
Mit Jammer, Furcht und Herzeleid
sind wir da stets umgeben.
An Seel und Leib ist Angst und Noth,
und über alles macht der Tod
zuletzt das größte Schrecken.

2 Ach! Adams Fall und Missethat
verursacht solche Plagen,
weil jeder mitgesündigt hat,
muß sie auch jeder tragen.
Und wäre Gottes Trost nicht hie,
so wär uns besser, das wir nie
geboren worden wären.

3 Herr GOtt, du unsre Zuflucht bist!
Bei dir sind wir in Gnaden.
Das Elend kann, wie groß es ist,
uns doch nicht ewig schaden.
Von allem Übel bringest du
durch Jesum Christum uns zur Ruh,
und machst uns selig. Amen.
