Mein Seel erhebt zu dieser Frist

Here is my translation of the hymn “Mein Seel erhebt zu dieser Frist” (Anon., 1569), from J. Daubman’s Enchiridion (Königsberg, 1569), set to the LMD melody for Erasmus Alber’s “Gelobet sei der Herr, der Gott,” from the Bonn Gsb 1561. The German text is better known in its treatment by M. Praetorius in Musae Sioniae, where it is given for the Annunciation.

MY soul doth magnify this hour
The Lord of mercy, grace, and pow’r;
My spirit joys exceedingly,
In God my Savior, who on me
Hath looked and turned a gracious eye,
His lowly handmaid; therefore I
Shall be by children’s children blest
Such grace in God doth man attest.

2 Great things to me the Lord hath done,
Who mighty is, yea, He alone
Whose name is holy without end,
Whose mercy ever doth extend
To them that fear Him honestly;
He with His arm shows potency;
The proud of mind and spirit high
He scatters far and makes to fly.

3 He casts from thrones the men of might,
Lifts up the poor to glory’s height,
With good doth fill the hungry heart,
And empty makes the rich depart,
His mercy He rememb’reth well,
From all distress saves Israel,
As to the fathers oft He swore,
To Abram and his seed e’ermore.

Mein Seel erhebt zu dieser Frist
den Herren, der so gütig ist.
Der Geist in mir sich freuet sehr
meins Heilands, dann mein Gott und Herr
hat angesehen gnädiglich
seinr Magd elend, drum werden mich
selig preisen all Kindeskind,
bei Gott man solche Gnade findt.

2 Er hat groß ding an mir gethon,
der mächtig ist ohn allen Wohn,
des Nam heilig ist allezeit,
ewig währt sein Barmherzigkeit
bei denen, so ihn förchten rein,
er übet Gwalt mit dem Arm sein,
d’ Hoffärtigen Mut und Herz
zustreut und wirfet hinderwärts.

3 Er stößt vom Stuhl die Gwaltigen,
erhebt d’ Armen, und Hungerigen
füllt er mit seinen Gütern schon
und läßt die Reichen leer hingohn:
Er denket der Barmherzigkeit,
hilft Israel aus allem Leid,
wie er hat gredt den Vätern gleich,
Abram und seim Samn ewiglich.
