Selig seid ihr, sprach Christ der Herr

Here is my translation of the hymn “Selig seid ihr, sprach Christ der Herr” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for Trinity XIII. Gesius 1605 indicates the melody from the previous Sunday’s hymn, which I give below. I also include the additional prayer stanza from the subsequent editions of Herman’s work.

Mel. Christ, der du bist der helle Tag.

O BLEST are ye, said Christ the Lord,
My dear disciples most adored,
For what the prophets longed to see
Is granted you abundantly.

2 For with your eyes ye see the things
That many prophets, saints and kings
Desired to see, a mighty throng
Who for My kingdom waited long.

3 When thus He said, a scribe who stood
Among the list’ning multitude,
And thinking Jesus to assay,
Began: “Tell me, O Master, pray,”

4 “What shall I do to be an heir
Of endless life, and perish ne’er?”
Christ said: “The Scripture—know’st thou it?
Tell Me what in the Law is writ.”

5 He said: “Love God with all your heart,
Soul, strength, and mind—this is man’s part;
Let this be thy concern always:
In good and ill give God the praise.”

6 “Love as thyself thy neighbor too;
Thus do I Moses’ words construe.”
The Lord said: “Thou hast answered right.
Do this, and thou shalt live in light.”

7 He said: “Who is my neighbor, pray?”
“Attend,” said Christ, “to what I say:
A man went down to Jericho,
And by some thieves fell into woe.

8 “They stripped and beat the man half dead;
He, wounded, lay in grief and dread.
A priest and Levite both passed by
And would the man no help supply.

9 “Then journ’ying a Samaritan
Came, and and had pity on the man,
Bound up his wounds so deep and sore
And therein wine and oil did pour.

10 “On his own beast the man he lay,
And brought him to the inn to stay,
And no expense on him did spare,
That he might have all faithful care.

11 “Which of these three men thinkest thou
Was neighbor to the robbed man now?”
He said: “He that in kindness ran
And mercy showed unto the man.”

12 Christ said: “Go thou, and do likewise,
Wilt thou receive th’ eternal prize.
Where men need help, thy neighbor see:
Help and support him faithfully.”

13 Christ is the true Samaritan,
Who all our troubles taketh on,
Heals all our sins by His dear blood,
Which never Law nor off’ring could.

14 He is our Neighbor from above,
All pure and perfect is His love,
He lays His life down for His foe,
Which we for friends would hardly do.

*15 Lord Jesus Christ, our pray’r attend,
Help us, like that Samaritan,
To aid and help our neighbor’s part,
And take his pressing need to heart.

Selig seid ihr, sprach Christ der Herr,
o mein allerliebsten Jünger,
was die Propheten han begehrt,
das seid ihr reichlich alls gewährt.

2 Mit euren Augen seht ihr,
darnach sich sehnen mit Begier,
viel Köng, Prophetn und heilig Leut,
die auf mein Reich warten mit Freud.

3 Wie er solchs redet, do stund auf,
ein Schriftglehrter unter dem Hauf:
Meister, ich bitt dich, mir doch sag.
Versuch, Christum den Herrn und sprach:

4 Was soll ich thun, das ich ererb
das ewig Leben und nit sterb?
Christus sprach: Weißt du die Schrift nit?
Was steht im Gsetz, das mich bericht!

5 Von ganzer Seel, Herz, Kraft und Muth
lieb deinen Gott, und was er thut,
das laß dir gfallen allezeit,
lob und preis ihn in Lieb und Leid.

6 Dein Nächsten, gleich wie selber dich
von Herzen lieb, also les ich
Der Herr sprach: Dein Antwort ist gut,
der wird leben, wer solches thut.

7 Er sprach: Wer ist mein Nächster denn?
Hör, sagt der Herr, ihn also kenn.
Es ging ein Mensch gen Jericho,
der fiel unter die Mörder do.

8 Die schlugen ihn wohl halber tot,
er blieb liegen in Angst und Noth.
Do ging ein Priester und Levit
vorüber; keiner half ihm nit.

9 Darnach kam ein Samaritan,
den jammerts, und nahm sich sein an,
verbund sein Wunden tief und groß,
Wein und Öl er ihm darein goß.

10 Er nahm ihn auf sein Roß mit sich,
und bracht ihn an die Herberig,
kein Unkosten er an ihm spart,
daß nur sein treulich würd gewart’t.

11 Wie dünkt dich nun um diese drei,
der dem, der Nächst gewesen sei?
Er sprach: Der ihm die Gütigkeit
erzeigt hat, und Barmherzigkeit.

12 So geh du hin, thu auch dergleich,
willt du kommen ins ewig Reich.
Wer dein Hülf darf, dein Nächster ist,
dem gib, hilf, rath zu aller Frist.

13 Christ ist der recht Samaritan,
der sich all unser Noth nimmt an,
heilt unser Sünden durch sein Blut,
das gar kein Gsetz noch Opfer thut.

14 Unser Nächster ist er allein,
sein Lieb ist vollkommen und rein.
Er gibt sein Leben für sein Feind,
daß wir schwerlich thun für die Freund.

*15 Herr Jesu Christ, hör unser Bitt,
hilf, daß wir, wie der Samaritt
unsers Nächsten uns nehmen an,
und sein Noth lan zu Herzen gahn.
